There had been some speculation in the media that there would be one singe Remain candidate in the Peterborough by-election, which will take place on June 6th following the recall of MP Fiona Onasanya. However, nominations closed today and that didn't happen. Lib Dem Beki Sellick was duly nominated to fight the by-election for us: We must stop #Brexit. I would have stood down for an independent #Remain candidate but @LibDems are the strongest Remain Party and I'm the most consistent local campaigner, committed to #Peterborough to save services, combat climate change & protect jobs https://t.co/b00TrqST4A pic.twitter.com/f2xWGtowt7 — Beki Sellick ...

For a number of years residents have written to Councillors in my group on the topic of landlords who are treating tenants really badly by evicting tenants who have not done anything wrong and do pay their rent. A so called "section 21 notice", also known as a section 21 notice of possession or a section 21 eviction, is the notice which a landlord must give to their tenant to begin the process to take possession of a property let on an assured shorthold tenancy without providing a reason for wishing to take possession. When a section 21 notice is ...

This morning, my family's postal votes arrived. I've had a postal vote ever since I didn't vote in the 1997 election because I was too busy helping in a target seat. I suspect Mrs Pankhurst would have approved, but I was determined that I would never again fail to have my say. Never has that vote felt more precious. I want this country to say very clearly on 23 May that we want to stop Brexit, that we want to stay part of the remarkable institution which champions peace, human rights and democracy. Many other postal votes will have landed ...

With political eyes turning to Peterborough, here is an aerial photograph of the vanished Peterborough East station. You will find it in the bottom right-hand corner. Read all about Peterborough East on Disused Stations. The surviving Peterborough station, then called Peterborough North, is right at the top of the photo.

Political scientists spend a lot of time trying to measure what the impact of political campaigning really is on election results or how much election manifestos really matter.

Whatever did for the idea of a single Remain candidate in the Peterborough by-election - Patrick Maguire of the New Statesman thinks he knows - we can agree that this statement from the Tiggers' Gavin Shuker is remarkable: "Change UK, the Green Party, the Liberal Democrats and Renew have been working hard these last few days on a joint approach to the Peterborough by-election, recognising that we need to put the country's interests first, securing a People's Vote and remaining in the European Union. "We all agreed to stand down any candidates we might field in favour of a genuinely ...

East Midlands Business Link confirms a story that has been in the offing for a while: Stagecoach Group has confirmed that its wholly owned subsidiary, Stagecoach East Midlands Trains Limited, is taking legal action against the Department for Transport. The group said that a claim was issued yesterday (8 May) at the High Court in London under Part 7 of the Civil Procedure Rules. Hello! I'm Mark Pack, author of 101 Ways To Win An Election, and the maintainer of the largest database of national voting intention polls in the UK, stretching back to 1943. Welcome to a round-up of the latest general election voting intention figures from each of the pollsters currently active UK. Two more polls, conducted before the local elections, have only just come out. One is from PanelBase from a little while back. The other is from YouGov, just a few days old and, intriguingly, it has the Lib Dems on their best share with YouGov since March 2013. (The ...

Jo Swinson has always been one to ask awkward questions. In an article in today's City AM, she describes asking about corporate social responsibility during a seminar when she was a student: ...my classmates looked at me with puzzled expressions, as if I was rather off-topic. Gone was the 1960s radicalism of the institution, and instead chasing the highest-paying banking internship was very much in vogue. When, after graduating, I chose a job placement with a small start-up company in Yorkshire on a £12,000 salary, the puzzled looks turned into disbelief. She sets out three big changes to the way ...

Social media has its uses, and it seems one of those uses is the quick communication of bad news. This morning, via facebook, I discovered a good friend of mine had died. Some of you will know her and will be as saddened and shocked by this news as I am. I only got to know Sam (Samantha Stretch) relatively recently. I was adopted as the Lib Dem candidate for Bury South for the 2017 General Election. Having only tenuous links with the constituency, I was appreciative to have a local party whose expectations were realistic and who were very ...

There is a significant possibility that we will succeed, and the MEPs we elect on May 23rd will be in place for five years. They will represent the UK when we make important decisions about trade, security and the climate emergency. I was in Hong Kong in March, and most of my friends had asked me the same question: How's the progress with BN(O) equal rights movement and how did Brexit affect it? So what is BN(O)? It stands for British National (Overseas). According to the Home Office website, it means 'Someone who was a British overseas territories citizen by connection with Hong Kong was able to register as a BN(O) before 1 July 1997.' They are not granted Right of Abode anywhere, including the UK and HK. The strict terms of BN(O) made most think that it is a travel ...

There is a disturbing article in The Times today, which reveals that millions of children attend schools in Britain with dangerous levels of air pollution. They say that about 6,500 schools educating 2.6 million children are in areas where fine particles in the air exceed the World Health Organisation recommended limit of 10mcg per cubic metre: Fine particles, known as PM2.5, are the most dangerous form of air pollution because their microscopic size allows them to penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream. Every school in London is over the WHO limit. Some 234 schools in Birmingham exceed ...

This sign (I'm talking about the lower faded one of course) has been up on the Maghull boundary on the A59/Northway (Switch Island end) for a few years now but what purpose was it intended to serve? Bearing in mind that drivers will have been going past it at 40mph+ and with it being both small with even smaller print on it, what hope has there ever been of its significance being noticed even before it became faded? 'Our Maghull – Our Future' is looking a little faded don't you think?

Bureaucratic institutions are an integral aspect of modern society. The way they work is at the root of the problems today. I'd spent the afternoon attending a pension seminar (about my own, not about selling them) and there is little to beat a consideration of your post-retirement finances for reminding you that you're beginning to get on a bit. And so it was a somewhat more thoughtful than usual rural bureaucrat who turned up at Great George Street, the Party's London HQ, for the year's second meeting of FIRC. The meeting started with a presentation from Gordon Mackay, the rather dashing Secretary General of Liberal International, who outlined his plans for reinvigorating this august organisation. Talk of individual memberships, of providing ...

The climate emergency features on Shropshire Council's agenda on Thursday, 16 May. Not once, not twice or even three times. There is one public petition and three motions from political parties and independent councillors. This is unprecedented and I am not sure how the debate will be managed. It would be a good idea to move the motions from the end to the beginning of the meeting to be debated along with the petition. But it is sea change from the February council meeting, when the council speaker cruelly extinguished a public question on climate change over a technicality. I ...

Residents have pointed out to me that the traditional red phone box on Magdalen Green is badly in need of painting - see photo. I contacted BT Payphones requesting this and have received the following response : "I have requested for the payphone to be repainted. The commercial officer will make a decision in the next 10 working days." I am pleased to say that repainting has now been agreed to and the cleaning of the phone box's inside I also asked for has been carried out.
