Four council by-elections this week and three Liberal Democrat candidates. If not a full house, at least that is an improvement on when these seats were last contested.

The previously reported noises of a cross-party deal for the Brecon and Radnorshire by-election have culminated in this: Pro-Remain parties will unite behind a single candidate for the first time at next month's parliamentary by-election in an attempt to reduce the Tories' working majority to three. Plaid Cymru and the Green Party will not stand in Brecon & Radnorshire to help Jane Dodds, the Liberal Democrat leader in Wales, to secure the seat. [The Times] This is great news for getting an excellent pro-Remain MP in the form of Jane Dodds, and indeed for the odds of continuing to improve ...

Plaid Cymru have announced that they will not be fielding a candidate in the Brecon and Radnorshire by-electiion. From the BBC Lib Dem leader Sir Vince Cable told the BBC the partnership between the two parties was "a very welcome development", and it made sense that "the two strongest Remain parties in Wales are going to work together". Adam Price, the leader of Plaid Cymru, said it was a "major step", but it was "the right thing to do". He added: "We are facing one of the most significant decisions, as to whether we are going to be seemingly yanked ...

I am just back from the Blaydon Lib Dem constituency branch meeting. We had a good discussion about the PCC by-election, campaigning in our held and target wards and kick started the process of selecting a candidate for Blaydon for the general election. As usual, I came away with a long to-do list!

The oldest of the Inland Waterways Association bulletins I bought at Foxton Saturday dates from 1965. That was the year the IWA held its National Rally of Boats at Blackburn on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal. The photograph above shows two Thames cruisers descending Blackburn locks. The one below shows the locks today. This bulletin also contains an obituary of James Chuter Ede, the former Labour home secretary. A vice-president of the IWA, he had his own canal boat: the "famous Brown Duck".

When I was 8 years old, I watched the tv series Roots. I was horrified at its depiction of slavery and it sparked in me a lifelong commitment to human rights, fairness, freedom and equality. The principle of one human being owning another was bad enough, but the brutality with which the slaves were treated shocked me to the core. So when Ann Widdecombe came out with her nonsense comparing Brexit to slaves attaining their freedom, I was angry. How dare she attack an institution that is so committed to peace, democracy and human rights? Chuka Umunna took her to ...

It's like I always say: the Shropshire Star has the best stories. Shropshire UKIP activists were targeted by MI5 spooks during the 2001 general election campaign, according to a new book written by one of the party's candidates.Henry Curteis, whose autobiography encompasses the worlds of politics, business, and the paranormal, claims that MI5 bugged phones, tried to infiltrate the local party, and the State intercepted UKIP's mail in Shrewsbury. He says that, exhausted at the end of the campaign - he came fourth in the Shrewsbury & Atcham seat with 1,620 votes - he went on a long holiday to ...

Lib Dem MEP Martin Horwood was cheered in the European Parliament today as he gave his maiden speech, saying that Brexit was not inevitable and asking that the EU continue its policy of patience with our Government which, he waist, was acting like it was in Mr Bean or Monty Python. https://twitter.com/MartinChelt/status/1146754515938529281 Great to see our MEPs getting off to such a brilliant start and to hear that they are clearly held in so much affection by their European colleagues. * Caron Lindsay is Editor of Liberal Democrat Voice and blogs at Caron's Musings

We went to Luxembourg last weekend, to visit my cousin J and her family (husband D, children . We took the opportunity to explore the rather charming capital, where my attention was caught by a couple of instances of public art. This fascinating sculpture, with somewhat feminine curves, sits just to the south of the Notre Dame Cathedral. There is no plaque explaining what it is called or why it is there. I appealed to social media for help in identifying it, and it did not take Quite close to J and D's house, a 1930s shrine to St Martin ...

I have just spent 3 days in Brecon and Radnorshire working out of the Llandrindod Wells Lib Dem Office. The reception on doorsteps is very good, but there are a lot of people who have yet to decide whether they will back Jane Dodds or to stay at home. What the campaign needs in the next few weeks is data and that means lots of people knocking on doors. Bluntly, not enough people are coming to help in this, the most likely Lib Dem by-election prospect of this Parliament. Jane Dodds, Leader of the Welsh Lib Dems is a top ...

Spice Radio

I'm just back from doing a live interview with Spice Radio in Newcastle about why people should vote for me to be the new PCC in the by-election on 18th July. We talked about a wide range of issues from why the role should be abolished to the European Arrest Warrant. It seemed to go well.

This year, we mark 30 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall. That moment was so much bigger than what it meant for the city of Berlin. The whole world breathed a sigh of relief, as at last the constant anxiety about two superpowers on the brink of war started to fade. And it [...] The post My reply to Putin on Liberalism appeared first on Radix.

PCC leaflet arrives

A large tonnage of Lib Dem PCC leaflets arrived yesterday. I collected the ones for Gateshead, filling my Land Rover with them in the process. They have already started going through doors. I have received calls from people across the force area who have received them. The scrap-PCC message is being well received.

Labour 4th yet again

As usual, please consider the health warning that comes with any opinion poll. Don't read too much into an individual poll's result but look at the trends instead. And so, yet again, we have another poll in which 4 parties are competing from a position of similar vote shares with Labour under Corbyn are in 4th place. As reported in the Independent, the results are: Conservative 24% Brexit 23%

There is an interesting article in today's Guardian, which reports that California became the first state in the US to ban discrimination over natural hair on Wednesday. They say that Governor Gavin Newsom signed the Creating a Respectful and Open Workplace (Crown) Act into law, prohibiting employers and schools from enforcing rules against hairstyles including afros, braids, twists, and locks: Workplace policies that prohibit such styles have serious economic and health consequences, especially for black individuals, the bill said. "In a society in which hair has historically been one of many determining factors of a person's race, and whether they ...

Lib Dems: More join calls for Tories to end social care funding crisis Responding to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee report which describes social care funding as "a national scandal", Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Judith Jolly said: As people continue to suffer because they are not getting the care they need, it becomes clearer and clearer the abdication of responsibility from the Tories on social care. This Conservative Government has continued to under-fund social care to the point of crisis. This report is yet another voice saying loud and clear that enough is enough.
