This photograph of the Square under water in 1959 has turned up on GettyImages. I particularly like the road signs. The half-timbered building behind them was still there when I moved to the town in 1973, but was demolished soon afterwards.

Leicester City Council and Leicestershire County Council have put up £10,000 each towards the cost of an investigation of the feasibility of reopening the railway from Leicester to Coalville, Ashby and Burton upon Trent to passengers, The leaders of the two councils are now calling on Derbyshire, Staffordshire and the borough and district council along the route to find the rest of the £60,000 the survey will cost. The Leicester Mercury quotes the city's mayor Sir Peter Soulsby: "The line is probably the line in the country with the best prospects of being re-opened for passengers. "Were it to ever ...

"Love Ludlow." That's the message as you walk under the railway between Sheet Road and Sandpits. A more recent expression of artistic talent on Market Square is "I'm making a call". Should you want to see a female 'brother' - drop down to Friars Walk. All these illegal artworks send messages. All are graffiti. All could be described as vandalism or even criminal damage. But aren't they are art? Don't they brighten up our town? Do they create talking points? Let me know you views. These are not the only examples of graffiti around the town of late. Images on ...

Third paragraph:Elsewhere the ridges around me are wooded, alive with scarlets and brasses and bronzes. The sky is huge, the westering sun wanbright. The valley is filling with a deeper blue, a haze whose slight smokiness touches my nostrils. This is Indian summer, the funeral pyre of the year.I wrote about this story back in 2004:"Goat Song" is at first sight a retelling of the Orpheus myth (the title is a literal translation of the Greek phrase which became the English word "tragedy"). The narrator is a singer of old songs from Earth's distant past; his lover has died; the ...

Responding to the reports that Liam Fox has admitted that a post-Brexit trade arrangement with the US may take longer to agree than previously hoped, Liberal Democrat Brexit spokesperson Tom Brake said:"Fox's comments underline the scale of the inaccuracies spouted by the Leave campaign. Boris Johnson and the Tories had promised us that the UK would have a host of trade deals in place by Brexit day. We won't."This should also serve as a reminder that the EU will always be the natural and easiest trading partner for the UK - as shown by the bureaucratic difficulties linked to settling ...

It is polling day on Thursday for the Northumbria Police Commissioner by-election. So here is my election leaflet, featuring mainly the cost of this totally unnecessary election (£2.5 million), the fact that the PCC system is a failure and the need to boost community policing.

It's not been a good week for British politics has it?! Our Ambassador to the USA was forced to resign because Johnson wouldn't publicly support him for doing the job we paid him to do. Labour anti-Semitism was exposed in great detail on the Panorama Programme with a response from Labour that attacked the messenger and tried to excuse their behaviour by saying that the Tories are just as bad. The Tory Leadership contenders have been exposed as either liars or fools. Then there was the Brexit MEP who thought we should do a 'Belgrano' and sink foreign shipping craft ...

Unexpected support

My attention has been drawn to the Newcastle Journal's letters' column from 11th July 2019. C Jackson (CJ) of Kenton, Newcastle, wrote about the PCC by-election candidates. CJ had lots of praise for Vera Baird whose resignation has sparked this contest and suggested the four candidates do not have the level of experience of Ms Baird. But, he did write: "it's patently obvious only one of them

A visit to Merseyside Transport Trust's open day in Burscough yesterday and what should I spot but a heritage bus in Ribble/North Western livery numbered for the now lost and much missed 311 route which ran from Liverpool through to Ormskirk taking in the Old Roan, Maghull and Lydiate. The Guardian reports that the government is to set out plans to resuscitate the UK's struggling nuclear ambitions with a new scheme which would leave taxpayers liable for rising costs or delays. They say that the funding model, expected this week, could help bankroll the multibillion pound plans for a follow-on to EDF Energy's Hinkley Point C project in Somerset, which ministers aim to build at the Sizewell site in Suffolk. It could also resurrect the dormant plans for a £16bn new nuclear reactor at the Wylfa project in North Wales, which fell apart last year due to the high ...

The political world has changed and it is hard - not just practically, but emotionally – to keep up. Last week, I pulled off my shelf a book of counterfactuals by Iain Dale and Duncan Brack.
