Superb rally for the People's Vote campaign today in Newcastle. I was there along with hundreds of others. We heard a great set of speeches but the best was, in my humble opinion, Andrew Adonis. Anna Turley MP, Phil Wilson MP and Anna Soubry MP also spoke well. The question that is unanswerable at the moment however is: do we have enough time to stop the UK sliding over the edge of the No Deal

The railway between Market Harborough and Northampton closed in 1981 - I was on the last return working - and it is now a cycle track, the Brampton Valley Way. One of its quirks is that it runs through tunnels at Great Oxendon and Kelmarsh. And in both places there are pairs of tunnels, as the line was originally single track and a second tunnel one was dug when it was widened. If you dare venture into the darkness, this video takes you into them.

Some of my most popular and best posts have come from people pointing me at something I'd missed, highlighting a topic that might be worth covering or sending me relevant information. If you're one of those who have done this so far – thank you, you've helped other readers get more out of this site. I'm particularly keen to get a better geographic spread of stories on this site – and also to better represent the diversity of what happens outside of London (where I live and so naturally spot more stories) and Westminster (where so much political attention gravitates). ...

Plenty more to write about Worldcon, but I want to start with a note on this year's Special Category Hugo, the award for Best Art Book. Please note that below I express my personal views, not those of any other member of the Dublin 2019 Hugo team. We decided to run this category because it is one that has been discussed as a potential permanent Hugo category from time to time, and it has been a Locus Award category since 1979. It also seemed historically appropriate, given that 2019 is the 80th anniversary of the first Worldcon in 1939, whose ...

Stop the Coup!

Up and down Britain marches and rallies have been taking place to oppose Prime Minister Boris Johnson's move to prorogue (i.e. suspend) Parliament by about five weeks from the second week of September, thus leaving precious little time for opponents of a No Deal Brexit to scupper his plans to take the United Kingdom out [...]

Around five million British citizens live abroad. They come from all walks of life – working families with children, students, professionals, freelancers, and pensioners. Many continue to pay UK taxes, retaining close connections with the UK, regularly visiting relatives and friends living there. They have often built up business and cultural relationships between the UK and their adopted homeland. However, our fellow citizens are now under pressure. A large number were disenfranchised in the 2016 EU referendum because of having lived for more than 15 years out of the country. Yet the 1-2 million Brits living in the rest of ...

The Sunday Times reports that senior doctors have warned the NHS to brace itself for the "biggest threat it has ever faced" if the UK crashes out of the EU on October 31. Their warning has been made in light of a leaked internal document which reveals the risks to patients from expected drug shortages: Confidential files from NHS England, seen by The Sunday Times, list medicines that have been impossible to stockpile, including for schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, epilepsy and the chronic pain condition trigeminal neuralgia. The documents, which show the drugs categorised according to the expected impact of shortages, ...

With our affairs at a low ebb, it is time to cheer the nation up: I brought my girl an apple She let me hold her hand. I brought my girl an orange We kissed beneath the band. I brought my girl bananas She let me squeeze her tight. I'm going to bring a watermelon To my girl tonight. You can hear Neil Innes in an edition of the music podcast The Word talking about the early days of the Bonzos and the joy they found in discovering songs like this on unwanted 78s . I decided to have a good look at the progress being made on making Melling's Ashworth junction on the M58 a full junction for the first time. Here's how things looked on my visit:- New steps down to where the new route of Giddygate Lane will be I think. Looking towards Maghull over the junction road works and the vast Maghull East site that is presently growing the food we eat but is designated for housing. I'll try to keep an eye on progress here and update via this blog site. Click on the photos to enlarge them

I have now returned from two weeks enjoying the restorative magic of Rosemarkie Beach. I needed that break so much. At the beginning of July, I felt so physically and mentally exhausted that I actually feared that I was going to fall over completely. My trip to Brecon, hard work though it was, revived my spirits a bit, but I was still in dire need of a proper break. Editing LDV is a huge passion, but it can be a bit all-consuming at times, especially when trying to combine it with a day job and all the other assorted Lib ...
