Southwell, which dominates its small town, is perhaps England's least known cathedral, but it's certainly one of its most remarkable. Next to it stand the ruins of the Archbishop of York's palace, with the Edwardian residence for the Bishops of Southwell built among them.

Visiting Vaughan Wilkins' grave in Farnsfield I mentioned that his first historical novel And So- Victoria, a success on both sides of the Atlantic when it came out in 1937, was never filmed. In his memoirs the British film producer and director Victor Saville gave one explanation: And So Victoria, as the title indicates, was set in the period before Victoria came to the throne. A fascinating yarn about her Uncles Cumberland and Brunswick attempting to prevent her accession - the wicked uncles, always a popular them in British history. I put Hugh Walpole to work on the screenplay, but, ...

Opposition parties met today to talk strategy for the next stage of the Brexit Drama. Over the weekend we had seen talk of a potential vote of no confidence this week. Matthew D'Ancona explained yesterday on Twitter why this would be a mistake. 1. KLAXON ELEPHANT TRAP WARNING: if the SNP tables a vote of no confidence this week – as Johnson has allowed minority Opposition parties to do – it will be doing exactly, to the letter, what he is hoping for... — Matthew d'Ancona (@MatthewdAncona) September 29, 2019 I understand that Jo presented a strong case for a ...

This post, taken from Chuka Umunna's Facebook page, will be of interest to many readers, I suspect: I've read with some interest talk about a Vote Of No Confidence in the Government being tabled this coming week by the SNP in Parliament. The Liberal Democrats' priority is to stop Brexit altogether – that begins with stopping a 'no deal' Brexit on 31st October. So, whatever happens, it's vital the House of Commons ensures nothing is done which will compromise our ability to stop a 'no deal' Brexit on 31st October. We will be guided by these goals. The most sensible ...

Three curiosities.

1. Why is the government, at our expense, allowed to advertise on television and the motorways that we should "Get ready for Brexit on 31st October," when parliament has passed a law, which has received the Royal Assent, that such a move will be illegal? I suppose they could argue that, strictly speaking the law, known as the Benn Act, says no Brexit without a deal approved by parliament. But there is as yet no sign of such a deal, and even if one were to emerge, it far from certain that parliament would approve it. The most that the ...

Tower Hamlets Liberal Democrats have selected two new Parliamentary Candidates: Josh Babarinde for Bethnal Green & Bow, and Andrew Cregan for Poplar & Limehouse in preparation for a snap General Election. Josh Babarinde is the founder of Cracked It, a social enterprise based in the borough that supports young ex-offenders away from crime and towards employment. In 2019, the Evening Standard named Cracked It the Social Enterprise of the Year. Josh said: Tower Hamlets has among the greatest crime and anti-social behaviour challenges in London. My frontline experience working to tackle knife crime locally across multiple communities puts me in ...

One of the huge successes of Blairism was creating an ecosystem of thinkers around new Labour who set the tone for political debate throughout the 90s and beyond. Left of centre think tanks had a symbiotic relationship with the party and the centre left media, who could be relied upon to be sympathetic. When Blair eventually took power the party recruited many policy advisers and senior staff from this ecosystem: Campbell and Mandelson, Patricia Hewitt from the IPPR and Geoff Mulgan from Demos, who became the Head of the Number 10 Policy Unit. The political centre ground - including the ...

I was pleased to be adopted recently as the Liberal Democrat candidate for Westminster North. My journey to this point has been a long one. Through a career in business, the police, another party and all the way from Hong Kong, I have been emboldened to join the fight to demand better for our communities and country than this Tory-Labour mess. I was born in a Hong Kong shanty-town pig shed. Aged 5 I worked in a toy factory before coming to the UK at 10, unable to speak English. Living and working in my parents' takeaway shop in a ...

Two weeks ago, on a train journey back from Bournemouth, I spoke with a fellow Liberal Democrat PhD student. He is a student in Vienna and was considering stepping back from party politics. It is safe to say that both PhDs and party politics take up considerable time. Last year, I had hoped informally to step back from party politics when I started my PhD. Over the previous 12 months, I have not been successful at this. Amongst other things, I attended several conferences, stood as a paper candidate in the local elections and helped to edit two Lib Dem ...

This investigation by the BBC which found wide-spread suffering and mistreatment of dogs in West Wales puppy farms was no surprise to those of us who have sought to have these institutions closed down. The inquiry concluded that vets are part of a "broken" system that has failed to address poor welfare at puppy farms in Wales, with dogs being kept in "filthy" conditions at establishments approved by councils. Some breeders were continually re-licensed despite their dogs suffering "serious health conditions": Selling dogs is big business in Wales. BBC research found there were 260 licensed dog breeders in the country ...

There is something almost Tolkein-esque about the plight of Boris Johnson now, though it is not quite clear yet whether he is playing a Saruman role, or perhaps the Thorin Oakenshield role – locked into his position by his urge for power. I find it hard to take some of the rhetoric seriously on either side, but this post is about one myth – that the loss of trust in government is a sudden revelation from recent years. I have found myself thinking recently and often about the inability of modern governments to think clearly and effectively about risk. Smoking ...

It's been very quiet over the past few days, but I tend to put that down to the convention not to distract from other political conferences. However, our Press team are still working away... A Plea to Jo Swinson

The press are now reporting another method by which Joker Johnson can bypass the Benn Act legally. I have my own theory but others are speculating he may declare a National Emergency and invoke powers under Tony Blair's Civil Contingencies Act 2004. I would also draw people's attention to the current Private Eye issue and the article headed " 'No deal' army. The navy and RAF are on call too! " and evidence presented that when Johnson pulls his No Deal and Exit dirty trick, the military are preparing to take over councils and the Government will rule by decree. ...
