Transport Secretary needs to sack Northern A&E waiting times will be worse with Tories' extreme Brexit Jardine secures Govt commitment to introduce Domestic Abuse Bill by Easter Lib Dems continue to oppose dangerous Withdrawal Bill Transport Secretary needs to sack Northern The Liberal Democrats have called for the Transport Secretary to "sack Northern" following the announcement that the Government is considering awarding Northern a short-term contract. Liberal Democrat Transport Spokesperson Tim Farron said: The Conservative Government's big announcement on Northern is just more delay, something that rail passengers in the North are all too familiar with. It's completely unthinkable that ...

Even if you support the monarchy - its powerlessness to resist Boris Johnson's prorogation of parliament last September has made me less inclined to do so - you have to admit that Prince Harry has already outlived his function. One of the American heiresses who married into and rescued the British aristocracy in the late 19th century is supposed to have referred to her two sons as "the heir and the spare". Harry was always the spare, and now his brother has three children there is no need for one. His Uncle Andrew hardly offers an encouraging model of what ...

Nick Harvey, former Liberal Democrat chief executive and for MP for North Devon, has a letter in the new Private Eye. It concludes: Though I had departed by then, the Lib Dem pivot on 28 October to back an election appears to have been taken that weekend under SNP pressure, and Labour left Labour no choice but to follow suit.It was a catastrophic mistake, gift-wrapping everything wanted and handing it to him for Christmas... majority government, Brexit, and given the state of the Labour Party, potentially ten years in office. Defeated Lib Dem MPs, Jo Swinson among them, paid a ...

Second paragraph of third chapter of Chasers:She realised she was fiddling with her neck. 'Calm down, Mitchell,' she said.Second paragraph of third chapter of Bad Blood (actually labelled chapter 41):'Good to see I'm not the only one chuffing away like a chimney,' said Denise, smiling. 'I approve.'It's actually seven years since I read the first of the three Being Human novels, all by stalwarts of the Doctor Who writing scene, but it was nice to return to them. Chasers picks up the storyline from the previous book about George (the werewolf) being asked by lesbian friends to father their baby. ...

Liberal Democrat Voice is pleased to see Lord Thomas of Greenford back in his usual place in the House of Lords, following a period of ill-health. Yesterday, he made a typically punchy intervention during the Queen's Speech debate warning over potential political interference with the judiciary... My Lords, in 1978 I was the guest of a senior lawyer in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. That evening at home, he answered a phone call and came back wreathed in smiles: "The Republicans are struggling to get their legislation through the State Senate", he told me. "The Democrats have told them they have to pay ...

Responding to comments by EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen that Johnson's December 2020 is 'very tight' and that 'it is basically impossible to negotiate all topics I have been mentioning', Liberal Democrat Brexit Spokesperson Alistair Carmichael MP said: "It is becoming increasingly clear that the hard deadline Boris Johnson has set for negotiating the future relationship between the EU and UK is unrealistic. "Von der Leyen's comments highlight that the Tory government must be open to extending the transition period beyond the end of this year to ensure we do not leave with a half-baked deal or crash ...

Responding to today's Commons vote on protecting child refugees, Liberal Democrat MP Tim Farron said that Tory MPs had "earned the labels" of "insular and inhumane" by voting against the cross-party amendment.Every Liberal Democrat MP voted for an opposition amendment to the Withdrawal Agreement Bill to retain a statutory duty on the Government to negotiate an agreement with the EU that protects family reunion rights for unaccompanied child refugees in Europe. However, Conservative MPs voted down the amendment by 348 votes to 252.Responding to the vote, Tim Farron said:"Tory MPs love to talk about 'global Britain' and claim that Brexit ...

Following Donald Trump's call on the UK to break away from the Iran nuclear deal, Liberal Democrat Acting Leader Ed Davey said: "Trump's call for the UK to break away from the Iran nuclear deal is dangerous, and Britain should reject it. "It's time for Boris Johnson to decide where his values lie. It is essential the UK stands up for international law and human rights. He must not allow the UK to be used as the lapdog of President Trump, and should remember that the Iran nuclear deal was signed by an American President, whose strategy of diplomatic engagement ...

Fifty Ps for Refugees

Remainers haven't reacted well to the repeated Government announcements of a 'special' 50p coin to mark the withdrawal from the EU. So that puts a grin on the face of every Tory and Faragist. The most common response of vocal Remainers is to say that they will boycott the coin, which is not an easy strategy in a crowded shop and, I imagine, might result in people having to forego their change if they won't accept legal tender (and lead to wry smiles from those trying to use Scottish notes in parts of England). Another response is needed, my friends. ...

I am no royalist, so I am struggling to understand the reaction of certain media outlets to the decision of the Duke and Duchess of Sussex to step down from royal duties and find a different life for themselves. As long as we are not paying them to shoot off to North America, I don't feel it is really any of our business what they do with their lives. There are a few tweets on this issue however, which I reproduce below, that sum up the sorry state of much of our media and those who join them in criticising ...

Moran: Govt must invest to end crisis in children's social care Responding to analysis by the Local Government Association, revealing that the number of children in care has risen by 28% in the last 10 years, Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Layla Moran MP said: While councils struggle, hundreds of children are missing out on on a suitable children's home near to their family and friends. The more councils' budgets are squeezed, the less is being invested to prevent young people getting into crisis in the first place. Every child, no matter their circumstances, deserves the best start in life. Conservative ...
