As the blurb on the British Film Institute website says: John Clague's amazing film starts with the construction of new sea defences using heavy machinery. After a colourful hospital fete we see Archbishop Michael Ramsey in Reculver, presiding at an outdoor religious ceremony. Then we see repair work being carried out on the town's pier before fire breaks out in the Grand Pavilion, reducing it to cinders. After artists exhibit their works on the sea front we see the pier before and after the fire with rainbows over the water.

George Monbiot explains why burning the heather on the moors above Todmorden and Hebden Bridge have led to flooding, Led to the River Calder flooding, as it happens. My chief memory of the Boar's head is watching England lose the 2007 rugby world cup final on its televisions. But the Shropshire Star has up-to-date news. The council has refused a planning application that would see the building used for housing instead. The story is complicated by the fact that the local police had to apologise after wrongly naming the landlord as a paedophile because they had confused him with another man who bears the same name, but this has to be good news for one of my favourite towns. When I was a councillor on Harborough District Council ...

Two tips missing from most of the advice online for authors - as they're specific to Britain and that advice is often US-centric.

Short of living under a rock since Greta Thurnberg started getting regular visits from her school attendance officer, everyone knows what the Green New Deal is; a government led transformation of our carbon intensive economy to a green one providing lots of well paid jobs in the process. A few of you might have your suspicions about how it could be paid for ranging from: hope (economic boom, so taxes!) to panic (it's the bees! We need to ignore the cost and just get on with it!) to cynicism (ahhh, I remember the first Green Deal). You'd all be wrong. ...

Ireland, we were told by Boris Johnson and his coterie of Leave campaigners, was not a problem. It was a non-issue dreamt up by the Remainers as part of their fear campaign. The Good Friday Agreement, they said, was secure along with the future of the union. Then Boris drew the EU-UK border down the middle of the Irish Sea and threw Northern Ireland's Protestants to the nationalist wolves. It was not the first time that a British Prime Minister was prepared to sacrifice Ulster for the benefit of England. During World War II, Winston Churchill, offered unification in return ...

It is actually illegal to execute a U-turn on a motorway but that does not seem to have deterred the UK Government. It is just over a year since tolls were abolished on the Severn Bridges and already there are plans to reverse that position. The BBC reports that the West of England Combined Authority (WECA) is considering "charging measures and controls" on both sides of the bridge to deal with traffic levels. But officials have given no detail on timescales or how any of these charges would be levied. They say that ideas are being considered as part of ...

Responding to the news that the Chancellor has resigned his position a month before the Budget is set to be delivered, Liberal Democrat acting Leader Ed Davey said: "Boris Johnson's reshuffle is in tatters. He has lost his Chancellor a mere month from the budget."Like every crisis at Number Ten you can see Dominic Cummings lurking in the background. This is the Conservatives' own unelected bureaucrat, unaccountable to the public attempting to control every part of Government."The Liberal Democrats will continue oppose this woeful Tory government and offer real solutions to the deep challenges and injustices our country faces."

The Liberal Democrats have labelled Suella Braverman as "unfit to serve as Attorney General", after Boris Johnson appointed her to the post.Pointing to Braverman's past comments about the role of the courts and human rights, Liberal Democrat Justice Spokesperson Daisy Cooper described her appointment as "the latest shocking step in Boris Johnson and Dominic Cummings' assault on the rule of law."Braverman has recently argued that "the concept of 'fundamental' human rights has been stretched beyond recognition" and that "the explosion of judicial review and judicial activism has led to a censoriousness and litigiousness in our society".Responding to the appointment, Liberal ...

Responding to the news that Boris Johnson has appointed Alok Sharma as Business Secretary and the new COP26 President, Ed Davey, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats, said: "The climate emergency is the biggest issue facing the world today and the UK has a responsibility to lead the world in reaching net-zero emissions. "The Government's running of COP26 has so far been a shambles. They sacked Claire O'Neill as COP President, only to have both David Cameron and William Hague decline the job."That is why Liberal Democrats are calling for a COP oversight committee to scrutinise the preparations and outcomes ...

Responding to Boris Johnson's decision to reduce the number of women in Cabinet from seven to six, out of a total of 22, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Women and Equalities Christine Jardine said:"It's almost unbelievable that Boris Johnson has managed to find a way to make his Cabinet even more male-dominated. It shows just how little Johnson cares about gender equality and fails to ease concerns that women will continue to be marginalised by the Tories. "Unlike Johnson's Tories, Liberal Democrats will continue our fight to tackle institutional biases and build a more equal society."

Brand Lane is the main exit from Ludlow town centre and the route that must be used by large vehicles. Every now and again utilities need to be fixed. We have another closure on Tuesday for Cadent to work on a gas supply. This has been scheduled for half term week and on a Tuesday when we have no market. Although the official diversion is over the Whitcliffe, cars and small vans will find their own way from the town centre through the Broadgate and along the Linney. These routes are not suitable for HGVs which will exit the town ...
