From the Britain on Film site: From the Big Freeze of 1963 to gales, landslides and, most memorably, the major flooding of December 1960 and November 1965 - local photographer Harry Gill was on the spot to capture these moments of extreme weather in Derbyshire. Motorists try to negotiate Crown Square in Matlock as waves of muddy water from the Derwent flow into the town. The streets seems eerily quiet as residents take to the largest vehicle available: a huge quarry lorry, to navigate the deluge. The frozen water wheel was filmed in Cromford.

Primarily Disappointed

In which I lament the Democratic primary, which has gone from historically diverse to two old white guys. Because the US hasn't had enough of those apparently.

We're keeping under close review our plans for the York conference in the light of the spread of coronavirus. Based on the health advice from the NHS and government, along with that from York Council, there are no current plans to cancel the conference. We will, however, be ensuring that those coming to conference are reminded of health advice, such as the need for regular hand washing and the circumstances under which people should self-isolate. Hand sanitizers will also be made widely available. Obviously if the advice we receive changes, we may have to revisit these decisions as the health ...

Me 'sanctimonious'?

I was accused of this the other day because I called out Keir Starmer and Lisa Nandy for enabling the dead end of Corbynism by not themselves calling it out. Additionally, I pointed out Nandy in particular for her failure to call out how Brexit would make the poor poorer. My accuser was of the view that they were just being loyal to the Labour Party leadership and that in effect I would have done the same in their position or words to that effect. My accuser clearly knew nothing of my lack of political loyalty and that I often ...

Here's my latest piece for the Liberal Democrat website: When I first learnt election campaigning, one of the rules of thumb was that 'every leaflet before Christmas is worth two after'. It was based on the experience of thousands of different campaigners ahead of May local (and indeed general) elections. Starting with early campaigning meant you could set the political agenda for the contest. Starting early with activity gave more time to get new people involved and trained up. The pre-Christmas commencement also meant more bites at the cherry in that long, tough struggle to get typical members of the ...

Today, Liberal Democrat MP Daisy Cooper put forward legislation that would ensure female prisoners are given community sentences, unless they have committed a serious or violent offence and pose a threat to the public.Women make up less than 5% of the prison population, but they are more likely than male prisoners to be serving short sentences for non-violent offences. The majority experienced childhood abuse and many are victims of domestic abuse. This helps support the case that as most women in prison are vulnerable people, they should be only sent to prison when absolutely necessary.Ahead of the introduction of her bill, ...

Second paragraph of third chapter (which I didn't actually reach):Reena Patai sat alone in the courtyard in the purple shadow of the chestnut tree, and she crossed herself when she heard those words. The voice came to her from nowhere—not from the anemic thoughts of the mad, which continued to chew her hearing with their baffled mutterings though midnight peaked over the dark asylum—and not from the night matron subvocalizing a paperback about a woman's second chance at love. The voice was Satan's own.I got ten pages into this and realised that I would get no further; the writing style ...

The Party has set an ambitious goal of knocking on 100,000 doors across England and Wales over the weekend of the 20th-22nd March and has a dedicated webpage for getting involved. This is in support of the hundreds of local and regional elections happening in England and Wales in May this year, including Council, Mayoral and Police & Crime Commissioner elections. These present an excellent opportunity to make huge gains across the country. The Party is encouraging local parties to get involved by running dedicated events and campaigning sessions. This coordinated weekend of campaigning will help boost the profile of ...

My posting of a few days ago (see link below) regarding the consequences of heavy rain locally was picked up by our local Champion newspaper and in turn a resident contacted me with regard for the potential of flooding in the future associated with Whinney Brook/Dovers Brook. To explain I've taken a few photos of where 3 brooks/streams combine yards away from the Cheshire Lines Path/Trans Pennine Trail on the western edge of the Town:- Cheshire Lines Path crossing Dovers Brook & looking towards Meadway/ Old Racecourse Road Footbridge across Dovers Brook where it is joined by Whinney Brook ...

Sadiq Khan has decided to built his entire mayoral campaign on rent controls. I'm not exaggerating for effect: he has declared the upcoming London mayoral contest to be a veritable "referendum on rent controls". I was wondering whether to vote vote Rory Stewart or Sadiq Khan in May – Sadiq has thankfully made it easy for me to go Rory now. There are three main reasons why I don't like Sadiq building his campaign on rent controls. The first is that rent controls themselves are a bad idea. There are a lot of reasons why they don't work as intended; ...

Judging by their approach to EU trade talks the Tory Government are putting a lot of faith in a deal with Donald Trump's America, however is their confidence misplaced in thinking that such a deal at the expense of our arrangements with the European Union is worth it? An official document from the Department of International Trade seems to think that there is a great deal of self-delusion on the part of Ministers in pursing this approach. As the Independent reports, the government's own figures show that the economic benefit from a trade deal with the US may be as ...

Our market economy is certainly far from fair but as a result of a series of poor Government decisions, it is going to get a whole lot worse, for businesses and private citizens. The Conservative Party has often been considered the natural party of business, but a raft of policy outcomes on the horizon means this may no longer be the case. I needn't reiterate the fact that the UK has now left the largest trading block in the world. However, let me illustrate the disastrous consequences of this decision. By virtue of proximity, the EU remains our largest trading ...

Last night Sutton council presented it's 34th Liberal Democrat budget for approval. This was my contribution to the debate: Poverty demands compassion, not austerity The budget is just numbers on a page. If only Highways England and the Council could co-ordinate what they are doing. Just when Gypsy Patch Bridge works have closed the Beacon Lane / Gypsy Patch east west route, the M4 is going to be closed too from the M32 to M5 - so the A4174 will be the key route..... Thankfully the motorway closure is only night time. Here is the Highways England M4 resurfacing scheme announcement. We have been advised of disruption on the M4 in our area from Monday 2 March to Saturday 25 April. Highways England will be carrying out resurfacing of the eastbound carriageway ...

From Sheena Wellington : Wighton Heritage Centre, Central Library - Wednesday 4th March - 1.15pm - 1.45pm Lesley Ann McLuckie, singer Singer Lesley Ann McLuckie is one of the hidden gems of the Scottish music scene. Though she has always loved traditional song, work and family commitments curtailed her involvement until a meeting with Maureen Jelks, through a carers singing group, led to friendship and involvement in the Angus Trad Roots sessions. She regards the Fisherman's session in Broughty Ferry as her second home and it was there she received the ultimate accolade for a traditional singer - an invitation ...

At last we have the detailed application for the controversial application for a supermarket at Rocks Green. It has been nearly six years since the controversial scheme was first proposed. The proposal from Blackfriars Property Group is for be 21,000 sq ft of retail space dedicated to food, along with a petrol filling station with three pumps. The retailer is not named in the application. But no one is expecting it to be a discount retailer such as Lidl. Ludlow has been spilt on this application. Many think it will damage independent traders in the town centre irreparably. Others welcome ...
