BBC News carried an article recently about an organisation aiming to collect photos of the inside of people's homes during lockdown. No posed photos are permitted. And if you tidy your house especially for the photo, it too will be rejected. So, here is my picture of the tip that I call home. My floor is my filing cabinet, covered with farming and history magazines, sudoku books, packets of

On Friday (1 May) I was astounded to hear that the US stock market index S&P 500 had its best month since 1987, after its dramatic fall in the earlier months of the year. I was aghast when I further thought I heard that it had recovered practically all its lost ground in 2020. That ... Continue reading Suddenly then gradually is how the economic downturn will be

Michael Mullaney writes on Liberal Democrat Voice: Many of us living in the Midlands often feel we're a part of the country forgotten by Government. Liberal Democrats in the Midlands, having had some tough general election results, may sometimes feel we're a forgotten part of the party. To try and address these issues a group of Midlands Lib Dem activists have come together to found Liberal Democrats for the Heart of England. With twin aims of raising issues for the Midlands that need championing within the party and to get more Lib Dems elected at local and Parliamentary level to ...

Peter Frampton turned 70 last week, probably the last significant figure from the Sixties pop scene to do so. He hung out at school with the young David Bowie - Frampton's father was Bowie's art teacher - and was a member of The Herd and then Humble Pie with Steve Marriott. Frampton's career high came in 1975 with his fourth solo album Frampton Comes Alive! Released in 1976, it was top of the US album chart for ten weeks. Show Me the Way comes from the album and features the talk box, which became his trademark in this era.

Before lockdown Stephen Fry gave some advice on managing anxiety during self-isolation. Anxiety and stress are almost as virulent as this awful coronavirus. Take a deep breath and allow time to take on a different dimension, taking more time to do everything. He says that we would be wise to redefine our sense of time. To do that he suggests drawing up a timetable for each day and allow plenty of time for all the tasks. We should also turn off notifications so we are no longer constantly being bombarded by headlines, and then decide on a time during the ...

There can't be many films which spell the lead actress's name wrong in the credits ("Katherine" for "Katharine" Hepburn), though otherwise this is a film of high production quality.

Coronavirus Fatigue

Anyone who works for or with overseas aid agencies will be familiar with the expression "compassion fatigue" — the way that public sympathy, aroused notably by the Ethiopian famine of 1984, melted away after one humanitarian disaster after another was projected onto our TV screens. The latest victims of compassion fatigue are Syrian refugees, who [...]

Second paragraph of third chapter:It was the first thing Jonas noticed as he looked at the newchild peering up curiously from the basket. The pale eyes.Jonas lives in a future society where all roles are assigned to each citizen for life at the age of twelve; parenting is sort of communal; thought and speech are rigidly controlled; and the dirty secret is euthanasia of the elderly, disabled and misfits. It's quite a short book, in the course of which Jonas allies with a wise old man whose role is to experience and retain painful memories so that the rest of ...

I love Emma Walker. I really do, and not just Emma the badass who stunned the Scottish Party with the first known use of the word "vulva" on the conference stage or her tales of intrepid recruitment adventures, including everyone's favourite bra fitter. The Emma I love is someone who in the two years I've known her has stood beside me in every step I've taken in my Chairship of Scottish Liberal Democrat Women, who has bought me more pizza than I've ever returned, and who's dried my tears so many times whenever I'm overwhelmed or heartbroken, no matter what ...

It's a given that the UK's cycling network is well behind many European countries and that we seem to struggle to catch up. Major investment is required and whilst some progress is being made the pace is painfully slow. But sometimes you know there are fixes that are easily done but which get overlooked. Here's the obvious ones for me around Maghull, Lydiate & Melling:- * Junction of Moorhey Road & Northway, Maghull – a dropped kerb for access to the cycle path along Northway towards Switch Island. Just a dropped kerb and a bit of tarmac required at junction ...

We should be used by now to established beliefs being debunked, though with so much fake news out there it is often difficult to know what is true and what is false. Nevertheless, as a student of history, I found the claim in this Guardian article that Victoria Cross medals may not have been made from enemy guns captured during the Crimean war against Russia after all, to be a bit of a shock. Instituted by Queen Victoria, the Victoria Cross is Britain's highest award for valour in war and has been awarded 1,358 times. The paper says that Dr ...

At a risk of writing another article about a topic we have heard a lot about in the past few years, this one, again, focussed on climate change. Why? It is abundantly clear to all who read from a scientific perspective, that climate change is happening. We have seen wildfires destroying large swathes of land in Australia and the USA, we are seeing weather changes causing flooding and destruction in the UK, and an ever increasing magnitude of storms. We have been warned by scientists, the United Nations and many international governments that the time to take action is NOW. ...

Scottish Liberal Democrat leader Willie Rennie has today called for an intergovernmental summit on a universal basic income to take place to ensure that support is urgently made available for those who have fallen through cracks of the current furlough and income support measures. He highlighted the plight of self-employed workers who were not trading for the entirety of the last tax year, PAYE freelancers, self-employed workers who are paid in dividends, people who work from home and those who have recently changed jobs as examples of people who have experienced a sudden and dramatic loss of income as well ...
