Layla Moran has given a major interview to Matt Withers of the New European in which she attempts to sweep away the characterisation of her coming from Ed Davey's camp. Think of the unworthy "We don't need to lecture the electorate about what they ought to think" from Tim Farron. Or as Withers puts it:Moran is also eager to dispel some of the murmurings among those backing Davey that she will be a "woke warrior" - my words, not hers - focusing on trans rights and statues, important issues but rarely those which come up on the doorstep. So Layla says:"I ...

Speaking after the Chancellor's Summer Statement, Acting Leader of the Liberal Democrats Ed Davey said:"Coronavirus has left countless families facing serious financial hardship. More than a million people have lost their jobs and many more are worried about losing theirs in the weeks and months ahead."While I welcome short term measures to help people now, the Chancellor has no serious long term economic strategy for dealing with unemployment, climate change and inequality. "Totally absent today was any measure to help the millions excluded from Covid support - like new starters, newly self-employed people and freelancers. They haven't been helped at ...

I very much favour articles that are about climate change, biodiversity etc. and I had a write up from Cllr. Dyan Jones from South Lakeland District council, on climate change, that I thought I would share with LDV readers Tahir Maher Wednesday Editor Here in Cumbria, South Lakeland District Council takes the business of climate change seriously, and sustainability underpins everything we seek to do. Declaring our position last year; recognising the emergency, committing to action and unanimously agreeing to make this a public commitment, we set out to inform, influence and implement actions to address this emergency in ...

On Monday, the British Foreign Secretary, Dominic Raab, made an important statement in the House of Commons, ushering in a new era of post-Brexit unilateral foreign policy. Most significantly, he announced the government's intention to impose sanctions — including asset freezes and travel bans — on almost 50 individuals and organisations deemed responsible for extra-judicial [...]

When Ros first went to the Lords, twenty years ago, one of the first pieces of legislation that she was involved in was the Countryside and Rights of Ways Act. But, with the Government now obliged to establish some sort of UK replacement for the Common Agricultural Policy in order to subsidise British farmers, the terms of that support are being debated... Baroness Scott of Needham Market (LD) [V]My Lords, like some other noble Lords, I fell victim to the Second Reading cull. Had I been able to speak at Second Reading, I would have focused entirely on the question ...

There was a time when UK Prime Ministers could go along to summits, sign the joint declaration and then spend the rest of their tenure paying lip service to the obligations they had taken upon themselves on behalf of the country. Those halycon days appear to be behind us, and thank goodness for that. As the Guardian reports, the turning point appears to have been the Heathrow case earlier this year, in which the government's go-ahead for a third runway was deemed unlawful by judges as it failed to take into account the UK's obligations under the 2015 Paris agreement. ...

The corporate voice of the care sector is up in arms about the PM's comments on care. Of course, his remarks about care homes, not following procedures were sly and clumsy, but he is right that the care sector should shoulder some of the blame for the virtual decimation of their aged residents. Clap for carers was a touching display of community empathy for people in the front line but neither this outpouring nor the tragic deaths of care home staff should make the care sector itself exempt from criticism in the forthcoming debate on social care reform. Just before ...

i) births and deaths 8 July 1978: birth of the very watchable Eve Myles, who plays Gwen Cooper in Torchwood (and also appeared in The Unquiet Dead with the Ninth Doctor in 2005). Mmmmmm. 9 July 1907: birth of Eric Chitty, who was Charles Preslin in the 1966 First Doctor story we now know as The Massacre (lost, alas) and Co-ordinator Engin in The Deadly Assassin (Fourth Doctor, 1976). 8th July 2006: death of Peter Hawkins, who did the voices of the Daleks, the Cybermen, Bill and Ben the Flowerpot Men, Captain Pugwash, and Zippy in the first season of ...

Jeremy Clarkson has given a very guarded endorsement of the new Labour leader; it was less of a blessing than most people who haven't actually read what Clarkson had to say about him think. Yet it wasn't without real significance. A lot of people who aren't natural Labour voters really are warming to Starmer all of a sudden. I'm amongst them. I have never even seriously considered voting for the Labour party at a general election before; and yet, if a general election were held tomorrow, I would probably vote Labour for the first time. A lot of this boils ...

One of the great pleasures of Castle View Terrace is the view westwards over gardens and woodland. As you walk along the terrace, there is a feeling of being at the edge of the countryside. Especially at the far end of the cul de sac where a field often known as the medieval field lies behind a stone wall. It is a field where sheep may safely graze. But no longer. The paddock has been sold to Shropshire Homes, the company that is developing Fishmore Quarry, below Castle View Terrace. Shropshire Homes is planning seven homes on the field. It ...

The Good When the roads were quiet and building sites closed the world seemed more peaceful and you could hear the birds singing – I enjoyed listening to the silence and the birds. With traffic hardly moving our polluted world smelled cleaner – I enjoyed that cleaner air People were out walking country lanes in significant numbers – I envisaged we had gone back to the 1950's (NO not in a Brexiteer way!) Cyclists everywhere, goodness me cycling took off with the combination of more free time and generally good weather – I participated but then I've been a fitness ...

Tomorrow night, we are holding a West End Christmas Fortnight Zoom meeting to have some informal discussion about how this year's Christmas Fortnight might look given the challenging world 2020 has proved to be.
