Praising the Rank and File British cinema blog last week I mentioned the British actress Joan Dowling, who took her own life at the age of 26. Since then I have found this Pathe newsreel about her, made when she was 19.

I've discovered another enjoyable podcast. Each episode of Curiously Specific Book Club, which is presented by Tim Wright and Lloyd Shepherd, takes a humorous look at a single book, looking for textual clues as to exactly where and when it is set. Their look at Clive King's Stig of the Dump tackles a puzzle common to many children's book. Is it set in the England of the year it was published or the England of the author's childhood? Wright and Shepherd visit the book's setting and find that changes in land use and ownership have made the friendship between children ...

Here's my latest report from the party website, reporting back on the Federal Board meeting held this weekend and with thanks to all my colleagues on the Board and the staff team for what was a very constructive set of debates and decisions. We're putting the party back on track so we can achieve the sort of successes in future that we all so desperately want, and that our country needs. Problems with the current way of doing things make it harder for us to win elections and to give members a real say in what happens. This was one ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:The art of lobbying is to achieve congruence of the diverging interests of politics, business and society.I picked this one up in 2013 partly out of a general interest in sharpening the saw, but mainly because the author and I were on opposite sides of a particular Brussels lobbying issue at the time, and I wanted to get inside his head. Of course, I never got around to actually reading the book. Like other such books that I have read, it concentrated on being EU 101, explaining the institutional structures (now somewhat out of date, of ...

Walking and cycling destinations from Rimrose Valley County Park Country Park. I really enjoy cycling through Rimrose Valley Country Park, as I did yesterday morning, but sadly it is under significant threat from a new road being built from one end of it to the other to service the Port of Liverpool. This is of course a subject I've covered on this blog site many times. The reason I decided to highlight the environmental crisis which threatens this country park again is the two posters I came across during my bike ride. They are very much to the point:- To ...

Refurbishment of the overhead line between Kearsley and Whitegate Just to let residents know about National Grid work that is starting soon on the electricity pylons in our area. In Defence of Experts

In the run-up to the EU Referendum in June 2016, the then Justice Secretary, Michael Gove, declared that "we have had enough of experts". That argument unfortunately helped carry the day as millions of voters ignored the warnings from economists about the likely negative consequences of Brexit — and will soon have to live with [...]

I've sort of held off writing this article for a while now. But things have gone too far. I was triggered by an article in the Independent authored by Vince Cable last week on the topic of China and the west. I'm simplifying a lot here, but basically the former Lib Dem leader was saying Britain as the ex-colonial power should watch it when it comes to China. In fact, we should probably stay out of the Hong Kong debate altogether given our past sins. This has been an emerging narrative on the western left for a while now. Partly ...

Anybody who has been watching the shambolic approach to Brexit from this government must by now be aware that it is now inevitable that we will finally leave the transition without a deal. However, that does not mean that business is prepared for such an eventuality. In fact, as the Guardian reports, many companies are now less prepared for a no-deal Brexit than they were a year ago and have yet to make any preparations for such an outcome. The paper says that as a result of the coronavirus crisis, stockpiles have been wound down, Brexit-related staff redeployed and cashflows ...

Liberator sends a questionnaire to each candidate during party leadership elections which seeks to move beyond questions like 'is land value taxation a Good Thing' to get them thinking about what the party is for, where it should be going and how to get it there. Both say they agree with the Thornhill report's main recommendations and both want a greener economy. Both also indicate they would never work with the Conservatives at least not while they are led by Boris Johnson. There are though some notable differences between the contenders which may help members make up their minds, see ...

It's getting desperate on the buses. At the beginning of lockdown, the Ludlow town bus service was cut from 30 trips a day to six. The 701 and 722 services were combined. The park and ride service shuddered to a halt. The bus still served the Eco Park but there were no park and ride customers. Why would anyone want to use a service that was at best hourly and had a three hour gap over lunch. There is no park and ride service in the country that is so badly served. From today, Monday, there will be two extra ...
