Mr Fantasy, Traffic's first LP, came out in 1967 and this documentary was made to celebrate its 50th anniversary. Steve Winwood's bandmates Chris Wood and Jim Capaldi died in 1983 and 2005 respectively, while Dave Mason barely gets a mention here. But he did turn up as a black-hatted bad fairy in the BBC's celebration of Steve Winwood's career English Soul, Call it differences over musical direction.

Embed from Getty ImagesHere's an interview with Layla Moran you may not have seen. Earlier this month she spoke to Simon Barrow from High Profiles. This website interviews prominent figures about their values, beliefs and principles and about the experiences that have formed them. The results are often more revealing than your average political interview. Here are a few of the things Layla has to say: "I spoke Arabic as a child - my first word was daw', which means 'light'. [Up to the age of three] I spoke exclusively Arabic with my mum and English with my father, who ...

This was the topic of a marital conversation yesterday: which books of the Bible would pass the famous Bechdel test? The test itself originates from a conversation between two characters in Alison Bechdel's famous comic Dykes to Watch Out For, about films: Over the years it has acquired a minor additional tweak: a book or film etc passes the test if: There are at least two named women characters who have a conversation about something other than a man. Obviously the Bible was not made for the Bechdel test, or vice versa. But it is an interesting exercise to apply ...

Two letters this week, dears. I feel quite overwhelmed! I'm simultaneously glad to be of service and sad that my children have problems. Do you have a problem for Lib Dem Mum? Apologies

You may have noticed that we are having some technical difficulties with our site at the moment. These have been manifesting themselves in a number of apparently unrelated ways – we can't schedule posts in advance, we can't add pictures or tags, and the Recent Comments in the sidebar are very out of date. Our technical guys are working on it, but in the meantime please be patient with us.

In a meeting this morning, we agreed to put in place immediate measures to try and ease some of the problems created by the emergency closure of King Street. That closure followed significant damage to the Grade-I listed Buttercross by a late night truck. New signs are being put in place to ensure traffic using the official diversion over Whitcliffe do not turn left onto Linney. The signs will direct town centre traffic from Dinham Bridge up Dinham. At the other end of Linney, traffic from Corve Street will be discouraged by signs that say no diverted traffic, residents only. ...

Sent to Shropshire Council and Ludlow Town Council today. We write to object to Ludlow Town Council's plans to fell a tree between Station Drive and Galdeford car park. We are surprised that this matter hadn't been raised earlier. CCTV contractors are due to begin on site less than two weeks from now. The CCTV upgrade project has been in discussion since at least 2016 and funding has been in place for at least a year. Shropshire Council should not feel pressured into making a hasty decision because the request from Ludlow Town Council has come late in the process. ...

Federal Bored !

The Thornhill Report was severely critical of our governance and control. The feedback to the Review identified severe strategy shortcomings, leadership, organisation, and disconnect at all levels of the party. In particular, the report claimed, "the Federal Board was often a 'rubber-stamp' and is too large a group to be a realistic decision-making body." There is no way that cohesive decisions can be made simply, quickly, and effectively. "The Federal Board - 40+ members - is not, cannot, and should not be that team." So instead of recreating itself and its function, the Federal Board has created a 'Steering Group' ...

The Liberal Democrats are calling for a freeze on rail fares following the announcement that the Retail Price Index rose by 1.6% in July, which will be used to calculate the increase in fares at the end of the year. The Liberal Democrats suggest that any increase in fares would be "a slap in the face" for consumers. Given the significant drop in passenger numbers due to COVID-19, the Party is calling for fare freezes to help restore confidence in the railways. The Party want to see additional funding to increase capacity and build a network "fit for the future", ...

The impact of COVID-19 on the economy and public services has already been quite substantial, but as this article in the Guardian reports the impact on local councils could be as severe as that on businesses. The paper says that the Institute for Fiscal Studies believes that councils in England face a £2bn "perfect storm" over the next few months and will be forced to cut services if the government does not meet the cost of soaring Covid-19 spending. They add that without additional financial support, councils "face a difficult choice between depleting their reserves to low and potentially risky ...

I wrote an article for the Spectator this week about what I think Keir Starmer's likely approach to Brexit from here will be. I was fascinated by the response, particularly from Leavers who basically agreed with me. I feel like getting people talking again about realistic paths back into the Single Market and Customs Union is part of what I'm trying to do with all of this, so this pleased me greatly. One response from the Brexiteer wing of British politics intrigued me in particular. An article in the Daily Express which was essentially a riposte to my piece, which ...

Taken in 1948, this aerial photograph shows Stokesay Castle, its half-timbered gatehouse and the church of St John the Baptist. Stokesay lies just to the south of Craven Arms in Shropshire. St John the Baptist was substantially rebuilt in the 17th century after it suffered serious damage in a Civil War skirmish. You can see more photos of Stokesay on this blog.
