Ed Davey is the new leader of the Liberal Democrats. The result of the ballot was: Ed Davey - 42,756 votes (63.5 per cent)Layla Moran - 24,564 votes (36.5 per cent) Worryingly, that is a turnout of just 57.6 per cent - 117,924 ballot papers were issued to Lib Dem members, but only 67,320 were returned. I voted for Layla but I congratulate Ed and wish him well. He has pledged to listen to the voters, which is good. Mind you, we have received the clear message from our former voters ever since 2010 that they did not like us ...

With the result, announced today, that members of the Liberal Democrat Party have selected Sir Ed Davey to be their new Leader it means the leaders of the 3 largest UK-wide political parties are back to being middle aged, white men in grey suits. Hardly an endorsement of multi-culturalism or a boost for women in politics. What's more the new leaders of the 2 supposedly progressive parties, Lib Dems & Labour, are both 'Sirs', a title that hardly makes either of them look like politicians of the people and probably more akin to establishment figures. Both are seemingly widely regarded ...

This is my objection to the speculation application for seven dwellings on Castle View Terrace. The site is not allocated in the local plan and the developer's suggestion that because it is unallocated 'white land', it is therefore available for development is nonsense. The proposed homes will be out of character with this terrace which should be regarded as an unlisted heritage asset. North east Ludlow lacks green space and no more should be lost. The meadow should be preserved and transferred to the community which is prepared to buy the land and retain it as open accessible space. As ...

Congratulations Ed Davey

Sir Ed Davey is the new leader of the Liberal Democrats. Ed was the Secretary of State for the Environment and Climate Change in the coalition government and delivered the greenest government ever. He will make a great leader of the party.

In the aftermath of our leadership election, emotions are high. I know there are people disappointed by the result. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little disheartened to be on the losing side. I know Ed is a great liberal, a caring person, and a hugely credible environmental campaigner and I'm still a Liberal Democrat at the end of the day no matter what. With that said, many of you saw the need for new energy, a fresh start and a revitalisation of our party. The leadership is only one aspect of our party and one piece ...

When I first began studying it in the mid 1950s we were taught that, while never formally codified into one document, the British Constitution really did exist and consisted of a mixture of historic documents (Magna Carta,1215; Bill of Rights,1689), Statute Law (the Reform Acts, Parliament Acts), Common Law, Case Law and a series of customs and conventions. Above all, said our lecturer, a Mr Checkanovski (I may have misspelled that, it's a long time ago), it depended on the British sense of fair play. As the historian Peter Hennessey, who I believe coined the phrase "the Good Chap theory ...

They may have put in place temporary housing to protect the homeless from coronavirus, but it did not take long for the Tories to return to type. The Guardian reports that homeless people in three coastal towns in Dorset could be fined for sleeping in doorways or leaving bedding and belongings in the street under proposals Conservative councillors are trying to push through. The Tory politicians are arguing that a tough regime is needed in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to ease residents' concerns and boost the area's economy. But critics say the proposals risk criminalising some of the most vulnerable ...

New survey data from the Office for National Statistics shows that the Dominic Cummings scandal eroded people's belief that the UK would emerge more united from the corona virus crisis. The proportion of people believing that Britain would emerge from the pandemic "very or somewhat united" fell from 49% the week before the Cummings scandal broke, to 43% the week after, and has fallen further since to 28%. Meanwhile, the proportion saying we will be "very or somewhat divided" jumped from 31% to 38% when the scandal broke, and now stands at 55%.Responding to the figures, Leader of the Liberal Democrats ...

Smells like team spirit

Now it's all over I can write about it and what a few weeks it was. Signing up with team Layla was one of the best things I have done in a long time. Having met Ms Moran back in 2017 at a local party AGM I had pledged to support her in the event that she decided to run for the party leadership so impressed was I by this charismatic young Liberal Democrat MP. I should say I am not easily impressed, starting out in politics aged 16 has led to a certain level of cynicism in this 50 ...

When a German naval force arrived off the coast of Oslo in April 1940 the message from Berlin was that the manoeuvre was to "protect" Norway from a British invasion. Scottish independence was roped into the effects of Brexit from the day after the EU referendum took place. It was said by many, myself included, that one of the reasons that the Scottish people had voted no in 2014 was because by leaving they couldn't be assured of getting into the EU as a new, independent country and so the one way to ensure EU membership was to remain in the UK. Also, that Scotland having voted to Remain by 62% while England voted to Leave showed ever more how separate the politics of the two largest nations in the ...

The UK, like USA, Japan and others, have a profound advantage with which to recover from the financial consequences of Covid, if they choose to understand and use it. They are currency issuers, unlike countries using the euro and the dollar, which are currency users. Unlike currency users, e.g. Germany, Greece etc. financially sovereign nations can always meet future obligations: they can never run out of their money. Increasing or decreasing "the deficit" neither makes future generations poorer nor richer. Consequently, the Government can and should, without excessive inflation, spend its currency to fully manage the problems and opportunities to ...
