Over to Leicestershire La La La: Multi-platinum Dire Straits' bassist Jon Illsley was born in Leicester on June 24, 1949. He spent five years in the city before his father accepted the post of Westminster Bank deputy manager in Market Harborough and the family moved to Shrewsbury Avenue, Little Bowden. Surrounded by fields and once fond of fishing for sticklebacks in the nearby River Jordan, Jon had what he described as an "idyllic" childhood. No, it doesn't sound very rock, does it? Dire Straits formed in John's flat in London in '76 in the middle of a punk revolution. Back ...
Councillor Helen Sprawson-White on Mendip Council has switched from independents to Liberal Democrats, giving the party a majority on the council.
One thing that has made the restrictions of the pandemic more tolerable is that, here in Suffolk, there's plenty of space, and not so many people. And those people that are here seem to be more likely to practice social distancing and behave in a manner more considerate of those around them. That's an observation based on my personal experience, and not a statement of fact though. There are also plenty of places to walk, but today offered a rare opportunity to enjoy the grounds of Euston Hall, the family home of the Dukes of Grafton. It's only generally open ...
Michael Lewis in his seminal 2018 book "The Fifth Risk" describes how with each change of administration, supporters of the American President are appointed to head various Government Agencies. The LSE blog, at the time, crisply summarises Mr Lewis's account of what went on at the National Weather Service. "The choice of Barry Myers, head of private weather firm AccuWeather, to lead the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, a scientific agency within the Department of Commerce) is both striking and predictable. Acknowledging that Mills' appointment represents an attempt to effectively 'dismantle' NOAA through privatisation, Lewis writes that 'the private ...
The Deer Hunter won the Oscar for Best Picture of 1978, and won four others, Best Picture, Best Director (Michael Cimino), Best Supporting Actor (Christopher Walken), Best Sound, and Best Film Editing. Robert de Niro and Meryl Streep lost as Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress, and it also lost Best Original Screenplay and Best Cinematography. The other films up for Best Picture were Coming Home, Heaven Can Wait, Midnight Express and An Unmarried Woman; I haven't seen any of them. IMDB users rank The Deer Hunter top film of 1978 on one ranking and fourth on the other. The ...
Crouch End Clock Tower honours Henry Reader Williams (1822-97) who, as Chairman of the Hornsey Local Board for ten years, was the equivalent of council leader of his day.
The Lib Dems have always believed trans right are human rights. Over the last year it has become clear that the Party needed to explain what that means in practice. We know that some parts of the media have been actively trying to smear the Trans community and have promoted scare stories designed to frighten people into rolling back trans rights in general and preventing the reform of the Gender Recognition Act in particular. We want to support members who want to call out transphobic behaviour, and challenge it both in and outside the party. It was time for the ...

A fellow Liberal Democrat colleague from the north-east of the County has made the point that, if you want to go to the County town by bus, you can't, at least not directly. Indeed, you can't even do it with a single change of bus, although there is a direct train service. And, as I think about it, that's true for a large chunk of the county - there's no direct bus from Bury St Edmunds, or Newmarket, or Haverhill, to Ipswich, let alone Beccles or Lowestoft. So, unless you live within striking distance of a railway station, Ipswich becomes ...
It's not usually a good idea to check your phone when you wake up at 4:50 am. When I did early this morning, I saw a stream of notifications screaming variations of "Yikes." I can't remember a death that's caused as much fear as well as sadness as that of US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. At 87, she was still working, pushing herself on as long as she could, knowing that if she weren't there it gave Donald Trump the ability to replace her with someone who would tip the balance of the Supreme Court and which could ...
During the last general election campaign Boris Johnson blurted out a promise to electrify the whole of the Midland main line. Under present plans the wires will stop at Market Harborough. On Thursday the Nottingham Labour MP Alex Norris asked the transport minister Andrew Stephenson what was being done to keep this commitment. Stephenson replied: Further electrification of the midland main line is currently at an early stage, but it is being examined by Network Rail. The Department will continue to work closely with Network Rail on the development of a proposal for this, including approaches to advancing the delivery ...

You can tell that the government's test and trace policy is in trouble in England, when they start to talk aboout bringing in consultants - a move that could well bring about the complete collapse of the entire system. As the Guardian reports, the government is preparing to shore up its £10bn coronavirus test-and-trace programme by drafting in teams of management consultants: The programme, where 90% of tests are failing to hit the 24-hour turnaround target, has been touted as a key way in which the country can return to relative normality in the absence of a Covid-19 vaccine and ...
Ludlow Sainsbury's: My statement to the Southern Planning Committee Tuesday 22 September 2020
Tuesday is a big day for Ludlow. I am expecting a decision on whether a Sainsbury's and Argos can be built at Rocks Green shortly after 3pm. That decision, providing councillors approve the scheme, will conclude six years of debate. I am expecting a vote in favour of the scheme but planning decisions can be unpredictable. Neither Viv Parry or I will be voting at the committee for different reasons. The Southern Planning Committee will meet at 2pm on Microsoft Teams. Members of the public are invited to attend but cannot speak during the meeting under current temporary planning committee ...
