For the second time in 6 weeks, the prelude to Strictly involved the Prime Minister announcing tougher restrictions to deal with a new strain of Coronavirus which, although no more lethal, can spread up to 70% faster. Much of London and the South East have been put on a much stricter Tier 4 from midnight tonight and the 5 day Christmas bubble is now no longer allowed. Outside of Tier 4 areas, bubbles will be able to see each other on Christmas Day only – but the advice is very much "only if you have to." The thing that struck ...

"After 40 years in politics I am convinced that Universal Basic Income is the only real solution to poverty. Politicians, who oppose UBI whilst hiding behind a lack of willingness to find a way to fund it, are actually saying we will not be doing anything useful about poverty and are leaving those who can't survive via our mean spirited benefits system for charities, volunteers and churches to look after." Tony Robertson believes the level of poverty in Britain should shame us all. Philippa Borrowman argues that local authorities have a vital role to play in combating climate change but ...

What has the UK become, how have we sunk so low? Poverty and food banks are now an everyday part of many communities. I'm not religious in any way but the recent high profile BBC News story about what a Pastor and Priest have been doing to help the utterly desperate in Burnley disturbed me profoundly. The fact that in one of the richest counties on earth they have to do it should shame us all. We've had government after government which are for the middle incomed and wealthy with the poor getting litte more than crumbs off their table. ...

You may remember that former Lib Dem Mayor of High Wycombe sadly died in September. Members of her family wrote a beautiful obituary for us. Today, her daughter Louise writes in the Guardian about her mother's life. While listening to the debate on the 1967 abortion bill in the House of Commons, Frances heard only men's voices. No one was telling the stories of the botched abortions that she had seen the results of as a nurse and she knew that parliament needed more women. She joined the Liberal party and stood for parliament three times between 1974 and 1979. ...

The Huffpost reports that huge queues of lorries have continued to stack up in Kent amid Christmas stockpiling and intensifying Brexit uncertainty. With the UK now less than two weeks away from the end of the Brexit transition period, which comes to a close at midnight on December 31, a long line of HGVs stretched up to five miles on Saturday morning along the M20 as freight drivers headed for the Eurotunnel: Businesses, in a bid to avoid cross-Channel disruption in January, are stockpiling goods before the new year, in addition to the usual Christmas rush. On Saturday morning the ...

One of Ludlow's favourite delis has applied for Listed Building Consent for an awning to cover the seated area (20/05073/LBC). Harp Lane Deli at 4 Church Street has also applied for five tables with chairs and a gazebo. The proposal is in part a response to Covid-19 restrictions. The restriction to two customers in the store at a time has damaged profitability. This is an application that is right in principle but needs further discussion on the details. The image below shows the proposed style of awning. The awning at harp Deli will be a dark chocolate colour. I can ...
