The Wiltshire Gazette and Herald reports: A former mayor of Trowbridge who was kicked out of the Conservative Party has joined the Liberal Democrats. Cllr David Cavill was welcomed into the South West Wiltshire Lib Dem Group by the town council's leader Cllr Stewart Palmen, who said: "We would like to welcome a new councillor to the Lib Dem group. "David Cavill is a former mayor of Trowbridge and has been working to make Trowbridge better as a councillor for sometime." ... Alongside two other town councillors, Peter Fuller and Diana King, Mr Cavill resigned from the local Tory Group ...

There has been a lot of talk about the party's future approach to the EU. In a speech to Liberal Democrats in Cambridgeshire this week, Alistair Carmichael MP set out a possible route map back to full EU membership for the UK and has given us permission to reproduce his remarks. For the last quarter century Britain's relationship with her European neighbours has never been far from the centre of our political debate. For the last five years it has been absolutely dominant. Brexit may now have happened but few would be naïve enough to think that would be the ...

This is just a quick update on the data. I'll do a more detailed analysis as soon as I can find the space. Covid-19 rates are falling in the county and across England. That's good news but there is concern that Storm Christoph will have cut the number of tests nationally and in north Shropshire. That will reduce the number of reported cases which locally are running at around 12 tests in 100 being positive. I am crunching the vaccination data. That's interesting but must wait for another article. Here are the three main graphs. They tell their own story ...

As previously noted, the next cycle of regular revisions to the Northern Ireland constituency boundaries has begun, and life for us election anoraks has been immensely sweetened by Kevin Larkin, who has uploaded all the statistics to his Boundary Assistant app. It even has a nifty function where you can add all wards currently in a particular constituency as a bloc, which is a great help. You can play this game for all parts of the UK, but obviously I am concentrating on Northern Ireland in particular. The rules are that all new constituencies must be within 5% of the ...

Liberals divide!

On 7 December 1916, the Liberal H.H. Asquith was replaced as Prime Minister by the Liberal David Lloyd George. The change followed mounting disquiet over the conduct of the First World War, and Lloyd George's demands that a small committee, not including Asquith, should direct the war effort. Lloyd George forced the issue by resigning from the coalition government. Conservative ministers sided with Lloyd George and indicated their willingness to serve in a government led by him. The resulting split in the Liberal Party persisted until the end of the war and beyond. The party fought the next two general ...

The one constant in the whole Brexit charade is how its adherents have managed to redefine irony. Thus, today we get the farcical spectacle of British businesses that export to the continent being encouraged by government trade advisers to set up separate companies inside the EU in order to get around extra charges, paperwork and taxes resulting from Brexit. According to the Observer, in an extraordinary, but not unexpected twist to the Brexit saga, UK small businesses are being told by advisers working for the Department for International Trade (DIT) that the best way to circumvent border issues and VAT ...

I remember Wreckless Eric's single The Whole Wide World from 1977, though it was never a hit in the UK. This version is to be found on the prefab four's 1987 album Pool It! Mike Naismith declined to be involved and, in an echo of band's early days, the album was largely played by session musicians, with the Monkees themselves contributing lead vocals. Here Micky Dolenz is the singer.

Although I come originally from a city called Lublin, in the South-East part of Poland, as a child, I spent a lot time visiting my cousins and grandparents' in relatively large village close to a city called Rzeszow. I remember Polish harvest, I remember watching my uncle, my grandmothers' brother, who used to leave the house very early in the morning and who was coming back home very late; often tired but also happy, as the job enabled him to feel closely connected with nature. Looking back, I think that farming has been always strongly rooted in the "working culture" ...

Blether Tay-Gither is the Dundee Storytelling Group. From Sheila Kinninmonth, Blether Tay-Gither's secretary : Hope you can join us for our January Blether on Zoom Tuesday 26th January - 7pm to 9pm With a nod to the bard and legend Robert Burns, our theme is poetry. Many stories were once told in poetry form by the bards of old, as many were sung as ballads. Bring a poem this month or a story about poetry, or a story that includes a poem. Or a story that is a poem, or perhaps a poem that has a story. Or just come ...
