This week saw the first leaders' debate of the Scottish election campaign and Willie absolutely smashed it. Here's his opening statement: "After the year that we've endured, I want to spend every second of the next Parliament focusing on putting the recovery first." Watch my whole opening statement in last nights debate. This week, a massive shoutout to the fabulous press team who organise all this and think up the ideas. I'm just hoping against hope we'll get some ...

The news is out now. Next year's Eastercon, Reclamation, will have four guests of honour: Zen Cho, Mary Robinette Kowal, Philip Reeve and me. To say that I am pleased and excited would be a huge understatement. I'm at the age and stage where you start to look back and think, well, what have I achieved with my life? My career is not barren of success, of course, but it gives me a very warm fuzzy glow to think that in future years, anyone who looks at the long list of Eastercons will see my name listed there along with ...

Andy Hagon will stand for the Liberal Democrats in the forthcoming Hartlepool by-election. Andy, a teacher who stood in the seat in 2017 and 2019, said that he was honoured to be standing for Hartlepool again: He said: I'm honoured to be standing in Hartlepool again. I'm married with two children, a teacher and passionate about helping young people. I'm also a Hartlepool homeowner and Council Tax payer like you, and want the very best for our town. I grew up on the Owton Manor estate, and even though times were often hard, I always felt positive about the future ...

Earlier this year, polling showed that less than one in ten people know what the phrase 'universal basic income' means. Redfield & Wilton has now tried out explaining UBI to people and seeing what they then think of it: Universal Basic Income is a programme whereby a Government guarantees every adult citizen a certain amount of money each year. This guaranteed income would be given to all adult citizens without exception, regardless of their employment status or their wealth. To what extent, if at all, would you support or oppose the implementation of Universal Basic Income in the UK? The ...

I was on the way home after settling my Mum down for the night when I called in at a garage whose shop was still open. A song was playing on the radio. I recognised it and knew that it was by the Four Seasons, but didn't know its name. It turns out that The Night made number 7 in the UK singles chart in 1975 - I don't suppose I have heard it since. The song has an interesting history. The Four Seasons (Valli was the lead singer but did not originally feature in the billing) were huge in ...

Pandemic aside, those who are protesting about the government's bill to restrict the right to protest by giving more powers to the police are, in my opinion, on the right side of history. The list of those speaking out against the bill is growing, and even includes some surprising voices. Amongst those voices are former Labour Home Secretary, David Blunkett, who writes in yesterday's Guardian that this anti-protest bill risks making the UK like Putin's Russia. Blunkett writes that the government's plans to use the police, crime, sentencing and courts bill to give police in England and Wales sweeping powers ...

Georgia's Republicans may have shot themselves in the foot. The White-dominated local party dominates the state legislature and were shocked by Trump's loss of George and the Senate victory of two Black Democrats. Something had to be done. So they passed legislation to vote by post; gives the legislation greater control over the conduct of elections; bans the provision of food and water to those standing in long queues to cast their ballots; reduces the number of drop-off ballot boxes and demands strict ID requirements for all voters. All of these are aimed at making it harder for African-American voters ...

I have had numerous concerns from residents in Union Place recently about overflowing rubbish at the Eurobins in Union Place and I therefore requested from the City Council that an additional general waste Eurobin be provided for residents. I am pleased to have now received positive feedback from environment management as follows : "We've agreed to relocate the south-most set of bins within the car park which will enable an additional bin for general waste to be added, thus creating more capacity and reducing the opportunity for side waste and littering in general. We are going to monitor the bins ...
