Local Liberal Democrat Police and Crime Commissioner candidate David Watts is calling for a return to proper community policing, as half of all people say they never see police patrols in their local area. New analysis by the Liberal Democrats reveals that 40,087 crimes reported to Nottinghamshire police last year were closed without a suspect being identified - including 5,273 burglaries, 1,472 car thefts and 384 robberies. The party's analysis shows that 81% of all burglary cases and 38% of robberies in Nottinghamshire are closed without a suspect being identified. Terminator 2: Judgement Day won the Hugo for best Dramatic Presentation in 1992, beating Beauty and the Beast, Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country, The Addams Family and The Rocketeer, a year when all of the finalists were films (I have only seen the Trek). It also received the initial Ray Bradbury Award from SFWA. The Ray Bradbury Award was then chosen personally by the President of SFWA, and was only given three more times, and never again to a film, before 2010 when it was converted to the usual Nebula process. IMDB users rate it 2nd on one system ...

Given that the Tories are the alleged party of law and order, Thursday's vote on amendments to the domestic abuse bill must have been quite painful for some MPs. For not only did they allow themselves to be outflanked by the opposition but, in doing so, they failed to support measures that may have helped victims. The Guardian reports that the government is facing growing anger after voting against putting serial stalkers and domestic abusers on a national register, despite briefing they were likely to support the measures following the death of Sarah Everard: Conservative MPs voted against amendments to ...

I suspect we have seen those old ladies and apple scrumpers before, but then life in the village at the gates of Bonkers Hall is like that. Saturday Who should I meet outside the Police house in the village but Sergeant Carmichael? We share a chuckle over the sightings of Ed Davey reported by the public following my recent television appeal. Would you believe that one woman was convinced he had served her in a Stockport chip shop? And that a family from Fife solemnly reported seeing him mucking out the wildebeest at their local zoo? As the rozzers are ...

I am sure that all our hearts will go out to the Queen today as we see her sitting alone in St George's Chapel at the funeral of her husband of 73 years. Bereavement is horrific at any time, but the pandemic has made it even more cruel for millions of people. For the Queen there is a particularly difficult aspect. She'll be on her own, but with the eyes of the entire world upon her. I just hope that she gets some comfort from knowing that she has the compassion and love of those millions of people. This Monday, ...

In 1569 Agnes Bowker of Market Harborough gave birth to a cat. Or so legend maintains. This Renaissance English History Podcast looks at what this event tells us about the lives of women in 16th-century England. David Wootton once gave another interesting take on these events in the London Review of Books.
