Shropshire councillors Viv Parry, Tracey Huffer, Richard Huffer and Andy Boddington are calling for Ludlow Town Council to rethink its decision on Friday (13 May) to rule out Ludlow's May Fair going ahead this spring. The May Fair is part of our town's DNA. It attracts a wide range of people from Ludlow and its hinterland. Especially those who don't find the Green Festival, Food Festival and the Fringe Festival their scene. Especially young people who we tend to forget have also suffered during lockdown. We believe greater effort should have been made, and can still be made, to run ...

Like a lot of fans, I was hugely excited at the prospect of more Doctor Who stories featuring Christopher Eccleston being produced by Big Finish, his first performance in the role since leaving the show in 2005. The first of them, Ravagers, came out on Thursday when I was in Mons, and I confess I immediately sought out sufficient wifi to download it to my phone on the spot. (These days, I listen to Big Finish plays via the app on my iPhone, either through the system in the car or through ear buds while I'm out walking or shopping.) ...

There's a great story about this record and Humphrey Lyttelton tells it in another video. Essentially, Joe Meek its producer had an enormous influence on the final sound. That would be expected today, but was unheard of in 1956. Lyttelton says that if he had heard the record beforehand he would have vetoed its release. But he was abroad and by the time he got back to Britain it was already a hit. "So I shut up." There is another story I have heard Lyttelton tell about this record, though I can't find it on the web. He was walking ...

The AGM of the London Assembly took place on Friday. Conservative Andrew Boff was elected as assembly chairman, with fellow Conservative Keith Price as his deputy. Previously, Labour's Navin Shah and Tory Tony Arbour held the posts. If Sadiq Khan was not happy about the Tories taking over the assembly leadership, he will surely be even less happy that the Labour group on the assembly no longer chair any of the influential scrutiny committees. Media reports suggest that Labour AMs went into a strop during arguments over chairing the transport committee and walked out. Prior to the election, Alison Moore ...

The Guardian reports that Home Secretary, Priti Patel has been accused of a "flagrant breach" of the ministerial code by allegedly lobbying Michael Gove over a £20m deal. The paper refers to documents that show Patel attempted to secure a personal protective equipment (PPE) deal for the healthcare firm Pharmaceuticals Direct Ltd (PDL) in May 2020. Her efforts failed after the health secretary, Matt Hancock, said the masks were "not suitable for the NHS", according to disclosure in a legal case. But PDL was awarded a £102.7m contract weeks later in July to provide a different type of mask. On ...

Writing in the Observer, Will Hutton writes an excoriating assessment under the title: "Cameron, Alexander, Osborne, Clegg: how the austerity 'quad' sold their souls". Particularly relevant quotes include: Alexander, in short, is facilitating a China that is suppressing Uyghurs and Hong Kong alike... and But the reality remains. As leader of the Lib Dems, (Clegg) would have been leading the charge to limit Facebook's power, on the same side as its critics. Now he is Zuckerberg's human shield, the company's acceptable face. That invisible line has been crossed. You can read the full article here. And why not sign up ...

Here's my latest report for Liberal Democrat members and supporters, from the party website: Once we've had a chance to have a rest, we must learn the lessons from our successes and misses this May. A great team effort We've had a huge set of elections in difficult circumstances. It was a massive combined effort of volunteers and staff, candidates and agents, helpers and donors, to get several hundred Liberal Democrats elected. Thank you to everyone who played their part in an impressive team effort. Commiserations too for everyone involved in campaigns that didn't make it this time. Many of ...

The ousting of Congresswoman Liz Cheney from the number three spot in the Republican ranks appears to be a victory for Trumpists and supporters of the stolen election "Big Lie." Or is it? It is true that 70 percent of Republicans believe Trump won the election despite the fact that every court and election official (including Trump's own appointees) rejected the former president's claim. It is also true that Republican Party grandees such as Lindsey Graham and Ted Cruz are four square behind the Big Lie. But, by alienating Liz Cheney, the forever Trumpers have created a formidable opponent who ...

From the Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee : The Nature of Empire - Decolonising the D'Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum - being presented on Wednesday 26th May from 6pm to 7.15pm Like many natural history museums, D'Arcy Thompson's zoology collection was largely acquired during the colonial era of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of the museum's specimens come from colonies and dominions of the British Empire as well as the colonies of other European countries. Often, these animals were killed by trophy hunters or by the agents of professional natural history dealers who exploited ...
