Second paragraph of third chapter:Dorothea by this time had looked deep into the ungauged reservoir of Mr. Casaubon's mind, seeing reflected there in vague labyrinthine extension every quality she herself brought; had opened much of her own experience to him, and had understood from him the scope of his great work, also of attractively labyrinthine extent. For he had been as instructive as Milton's "affable archangel;" and with something of the archangelic manner he told her how he had undertaken to show (what indeed had been attempted before, but not with that thoroughness, justice of comparison, and effectiveness of arrangement ...

Where America leads, the UK follows is an old and sometime true adage. Suppression of voter rights in the United States is becoming rampant as the Republicans push to introduce legislation that would isolate the most disadvantaged from voting. Joe Biden has said: "Never before has there been an attempt by state legislatures to take over the ability to determine who won. Not count the votes, determine who won." Here, the government is determined to introduce voter ID despite no evidence of widespread fraud. Broxtowe was a pilot area for voter ID and the Lib Dems have taken a stand. ...

I'm sure that some of you may see my name and the title of this article and think: "There he is, banging on about local government yet again". Guilty as charged, Your Honour. The reason for my 'banging on' again has been prompted by an article in today's Guardian by one of its leader writers, entitled 'Local Politics is cutting a path for Labour'. Being the Guardian, the answer would of course be Labour. Wouldn't it? However, the writer's sudden discovery that there IS political life outside the Westminster bubble is welcome. However, some of us have been well ahead ...

The Independent reports that proposals set out by the independent watchdog which sets MPSs' salaries could mean them getting a pay rise above other public sector workers from next year. The paper says the Independent Parliamentary Standards Authority (Ipsa) has proposed that it is given new powers to vary the annual pay for MPs "below or above" public sector pay. This is despite news of a pay freeze for tens of thousands of public sector workers, which sparked outrage this week, while it also emerged the 3 per cent pay rise for doctors and nurses will come out of the ...

I was in a local shop a couple of days ago and the chap in front of me asked, when he got to the front of the queue, whether he should be wearing a mask (he did have one on) in that particular shop. The answer was that whilst the Government says you don't have to we really do want all our customers to wear masks to help protect each other and the staff. The chap agreed but then went on to make a more general comment. He said that he could not get his head around government messaging on ...

On Hina and ice-cream

Last Thursday, LibDem London Assembly member Hina Bokhari invited me to spend the day with her. My goals were to get to know Hina better, learn what the London Assembly does, and create a video for my YouTube channel we could share with the world. At one point Hina says "there's nothing particularly remarkable about me." I think this video shows pretty clearly that this isn't true – she is actually an extremely remarkable person. As LibDems, we should all be very proud she represents our party in the London Assembly. We certainly had some adventures! Just moments after the ...

It's becoming harder and harder to say anything original about the current state of British politics. It feels like a lot of stuff is happening under the surface, and by that I don't mean in backrooms or offices of state (although, there probably is a lot of that taking place). What I mean is Covid, the relative ceasefire in the Brexit wars, Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer, all of that is having an effect on the body politic, but none of it is having a visible effect for the time being. There will be some new Tory scandal and then ...

Yesterday, MPs debated COP26 Conference Priorities in a Westminster Hall debate. The debate was co-sponsored by Wera Hobhouse. Lib Dem MP for Bath. She said this is the biggest opportunity for real climate action since the 2015 Paris agreement, after which we have had a "string of incredibly disappointing COPs". Wera called for the government to get its own house in order instead of paying to lip service to climate change. The Government has failed to set any direction on how to heat homes in the future, how to expand the electricity grid for increased electricity need, let alone on ...

Reacting to Lord Frost's statement on the NI Protocol, Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Home Affairs and Northern Ireland Alistair Carmichael MP said: "This is a joke. The Government is taking us all for mugs when they say this mess could not have been predicted. They signed up to the Protocol knowing full well businesses would be caught up in a game of political football. It is time to get a grip and sort it out. "Their confrontational attitude will get us nowhere. Instead, they must focus on working together with the EU to help those people caught in the middle ...

The long career of the actor Earl Cameron, who has died aged 102, mirrored changes in both British cinema and society. His debut, playing a West Indian merchant seaman, was in the ostensibly modest film noir Pool of London (1951). In retrospect it can be seen as a milestone in its depiction of a relationship between a black worker and a young white woman - the first time the subject had been sensitively handled in a British film. The opening of Earl Cameron's Guardian obituary (he died last year) tells us of his social importance, but it's worth emphasising that ...
