Second paragraph of third letter:It is hard to keep up and give you day-by-day descriptions, but it is better because I can't find time to write in the journal. By evening, I am very ready for bed. But I shall try to go back to where I left off at the last letter In the course of my family research I discovered that Joan Hibbard, my father's American second cousin, had published a book of her letters home from her European trip of 1949. She had had two not very happy years studying music at Smith College in Massachusetts, and ...

Hello! I'm Mark Pack, author of both 101 Ways To Win An Election and Bad News: what the headlines don't tell us, along with maintaining the largest database of national voting intention polls in the UK, stretching back to 1943. The next general election is most likely several years away, but political polling of voting intentions for a general election is in full swing. Half-a-dozen firms are polling regularly, with a handful of occasional surveys from others too. Below the table, you'll find the option to sign up to email updates about new polls and also a set of answers ...

Laurence Fox was on GB News last night. This isn't news, obviously; Fox, maybe even more than Farage, is built for the channel. I watched his clip so you don't have to. It revealed a lot, I'm pleased to say. I like watching Fox because he is one of the least sophisticated right-wing pundits in Britain today – not the least sophisticated, mind you, for I suspect that is a bottomless pit – and as such, reveals more than he intends every time he speaks. Last night, he was on about the "green movement" which I think to Fox means ...

In many ways the revelation in the Independent that just 10 wealthy people account for a quarter of all the donations made by individuals to the Conservative Party since Boris Johnson became prime minister is no great surprise. One has the impression that during Covid especially, wealthy individuals have donatd huge sums of money to the Tories, presumably hoping that they will win lucrative contracts or favours. It is up to others to judge whether that hope was realised or not. The paper says that the 10 super-rich donors - nine of whom are men - have given a combined ...

Scott Engel: Kathleen

This is very American and very 1958, and it's not a bad record, especially when you learn that the singer was only 15. And Scott Engel, of course, grew up to become Scott Walker, the coolest man of the coolest decade we have ever experienced. Youthful fame can be a burden for a musician. Ricky Nelson struggled with the transition to being Rick Nelson - it's what his song Garden Party is all about. I've seen it argued that Steve Marriott's West End success as the Artful Dodger made him worry about authenticity in later life, explaining some of the ...

As the Olympic Games in Tokyo draw to a close and we look back on two weeks which has laid bare serious issues of wellbeing of athletes and blatant sexism in sport funding, as well as some brilliant performances in an incredible range of sports. I hadn't realised negotiating complicated climbing walls at speed was an internationally recognised sport but I swear I didn't draw breath as I watched people take their lives in their hands. And the cross country cycling was brutal with all sorts of obstacles thrown in the path of the riders. I hadn't been particularly invested ...

Residents have mentioned to me that it would be a boon to have some outdoor gym equipment in the Roseangle/Magdalen Green area, as is already in situ elsewhere in the city - eg Camperdown and Stobsmuir parks. I took this up with the Service Manager - Environment at the City Council who positively advised me as follows : " ... whilst we have no plans to instal gym equipment at this time, I am happy to include this for future consideration within capital development plans."
