There's been a small reshuffle of the Liberal Democrat Parliamentary team: Excited that @libdemdaisy will be our new health and social care spokesperson and @munirawilson will be our education spokesperson. This is a crucial time for our children's education and the NHS. @LibDems will hold this Tory govt to account. — Ed Davey MP [IMG: 🔶] [IMG: 🇪🇺] (@EdwardJDavey) October 21, 2021

Britain's Conservative government is approaching two years in office. Depending on how it amends the legislation on fixed-term parliaments, it will seek re-election in as little as a year and half (May 2023), or, more likely, in two to two and half years (later in 2023 or May 2024). The endgame of this parliament's existence ... Continue reading The government's choice: higher taxes or higher interest rates?

Second paragraph of third chapter:'Evening clothes were a class symbol, and it was a crime to spend money on useless luxuries when people as good as oneself were starving!' Sebastian knew in advance what his father's arguments would be. But behind the arguments was the man—dominating and righteous, hard on others because even harder on himself. If the man were approached in the right way, perhaps the arguments would not be pressed home to their logical conclusion. The great thing, Sebastian had learnt from long and bitter experience, was never to seem too anxious or insistent. He must ask for ...

Ed Davey is quoted extensively in the Independent on the plans to build a new oil drilling site in Surrey at Horse Hill, which is not far from Gatwick Airport. Surrey County Council's decision to permit the development will be reviewed in the Court of Appeal next month after challenges by local residents. The Government is expected to defend the decision – just days before COP26. Ed has written to Alok Sharma, the climate minister: This new oil field is the equivalent to ministerial colleagues breaking your cricket bat just as you walk out to the crease at Cop26. Your ...

I woke this morning to the news that the UK have signed a trade deal with New Zealand. No doubt this will ne heralded as the best thing since sliced bread and a vindication of our leaving the EU. However, it will in no way compensate for the trade we have left since Brexit, and not everybody is impressed with the agreement. The Guardian reports that the agreement is expected to add no value to the UK's gross domestic product. They say that the deal may boost New Zealand's GDP by $970m or around 0.3%, however, last year's analysis by ...

How can building six terraced homes generate £2.1 million mostly for the local economy as claimed by Berrys? There will be economic benefit from construction, purchase of materials and from the wages that construction and other workers spend. That amounts to £900,000 according Berrys and "every £1 spent on construction generates a total of £2.84 in extra economic activity, most of which is generated in the local area." Nonsense. This a bloated claim that has no legitimacy. It is not even up to date with industry estimates. The £2.84 claim relates to all construction - airports, power stations and more, ...

There are plenty of lessons to be learnt from the horrific killing of David Amess. People are right to call for a less divisive tone to political debate; Brendan Cox's article was particularly moving in its calls for more civility and understanding between opposing political sides. Part of this may well be more enforcement against online abuse, and perhaps pressuring social media companies to act faster when it comes to people using those platforms to threaten others. These things will be debated in time and rightly so. Emotions are running high and there is an understandable desire to create a ...

You feel that if you watch Blow-Up just one more time then its mysteries will be laid open to you, but they never are. Here's Vanessa Redgrave talking about the film in 2016 to mark its 50th anniversary. Years ago I posted an interview on Blow-Up with its star, David Hemmings. He and Redgrave agree that their performances owed everything to Antonioni's direction.
