Thursday's by-elections threw up some very interesting results. There was an excellent performance from the Lib Dems in Cardiff, while lots had to be drawn to decide a winner in North Kesteven in Lincolnshire! Most of all this week we want to credit all Lib Dem candidates and local parties who stood for election and gave voters in their area the opportunity to support a Liberal Democrat on the ballot paper. Cardiff We start in Cardiff where candidate Kathryn Lock and the local Lib Dem team achieved a great result in Heath ward on the City Council - increasing the ...

So, the last category I'm writing up for the Hugos this year: seven television episodes (one double nomination) of which only two are from shows that I know. 6) The Mandalorian: Chapter 13: The Jedi 5) She-Ra and the Princesses of Power: Heart (episode 1 and 2) 4) The Expanse: Gaugamela Without going into tedious detail, I dutifully watched all of these and felt that they were really dependent on knowing the continuity of the show in question. The episode of The Mandalorian made very little sense without knowing who these people are. She-Ra and the Princesses of Power was ...

There is always an air of excitement about by-elections. General elections and the four yearly local elections are planned well ahead by the political parties, candidates and campaigners. But by-elections are won or lost at short notice. And they can be unpredictable. A by-election is more T20 cricket than a test series. The by-election for the North Shropshire constituency has been underway for a week after the sitting Conservative MP, Owen Paterson, resigned amid allegations of abusing his parliamentary position by lobbying for two food companies that paid him £100,000 a year. The by-election will be held on 16 December. ...

The latest story in the use of expenses for MPs revolves around an ongoing housing saga that has not been resolved since the original scandal broke in 2009. The Independent reports that five ministers in Boris Johnson's government are among a group of MPs who have claimed more than £1m from the taxpayer to cover their rent payments, while letting properties that they own in London. They say that 17 landlord MPs - 15 Conservatives and two Labour - have put their housing costs on expenses while earning more than £10,000 a year each renting out their own properties in ...
