The draft agenda for this year's WSFS Business Meeting is out. For well-known reasons, I will not be in DC myself, but I have the following observations. A.1.1: Mark Protection Committee - I would like to be a candidate for the Mark Protection Committee, which will elect six members in DC, three for two-year terms and three for three-year terms. I like to think that my professional experience in public affairs could be an asset to the MPC. I would need a proposer and seconder who will (unlike me) be present in DC. Expressions of interest welcome. A.2.1: Nitpicking & ...

Walking into a room in my own home, which I have owned for close to 20 years, has become an adventure. I walk in and promptly forget what I went in there for. Looking around, I wonder whether I came into my bedroom for something mundane like socks or, hang on, was it to grab ... As the Higher Education (Freedom of Speech) Bill moves slowly through Parliament, Liberal Democrats are having to grapple with contested assumptions about freedom of speech and its limits. This is a culture war bill. The polarization of American politics is seeping into Britain. Britain has become a far more liberal society over the past 50 years. We must resist attempts to push the clock back. The Bill starts from the assertion that universities are incapable of defending free speech. It asserts that a new 'free speech champion' and a new right to sue universities are required to restore this freedom ...

Second paragraph of third chapter:I opened the drawer of my desk and pulled out a small mirror. A woman with somewhat ordinary features stared back at me. Her hair was a plain mousy color and of medium length, tied up rather hastily in a ponytail at the back. She had no cheekbones to speak of and her face, I noticed, had just started to show some rather obvious lines. I thought of my mother, who had looked as wrinkled as a walnut by the time she was forty-five. I shuddered, placed the mirror back in the drawer and took out ...

So the Lib Dems are certainly dominating with tweets on North Srhopshire and also with campaigning on the ground. The campaign is really taking off as party members from all over the country visit. If, like me, you can't travel at the moment, see under the cut for details of how you can be part of this. There won't be many from further away than Alistair Carmichael who has been in Wem this weekend instead of at home in Orkney. This has all the hallmarks of the Great Lib Dem By-Election campaigns. It's hard work and lots of fun! And ...

Our Parish Council has seen rather a lot of change lately. Two resignations have led to two newcomers joining our group, and leave me as the sole directly elected member - and I was elected unopposed, which is barely but importantly different from being co-opted. And, with our Clerk having handed in her notice - it wasn't acrimonious, I'm glad to say - it isn't the Council that I once chaired. I find myself with the sense that, whilst finding a new Clerk is obviously essential, there is the question of what sort of Council do we want to be, ...

Listen to Liberal Democrats make speeches and there are frequent references to historical figures, but drawn from a small cast. Just the quartet of John Stuart Mill, William Gladstone, David Lloyd George, David Penhaligon corner almost all of the market. Some of the forgotten figures deserve their obscurity but others do not. Charles James Fox's defence of civil liberties against a dominating government during wartime or Earl Grey's leading of the party back into power and major constitutional reform are good examples of mostly forgotten figures who could just as well be a regular source of reference, quotation and inspiration ...

It has been an interesting week for Sino-American relations and China in its own right. It started with the two countries agreeing to cooperate on climate change policies. There were no details in this proposed pact, but a start had been made. This was followed by a three-hour virtual summit between Joe Biden and Xi Jinping. Both sides basically re-stated long-held positions on trade, Taiwan, the South China Sea and human rights. But it was done in a friendly manner which meant another reasonable start. Then things started going downhill. The Americans are very upset about the new Chinese hypersonic ...

At the request of residents, I recently raised the deteriorating road surface in Forest Park Place - particularly the west end near the junction with Forest Park Road - with the City Council's Roads Maintenance Partnership - see photo. I am pleased to have been advised in reply that the partnership has agreed to add Forest Park Place into the 2022-2023 carriageway resurfacing programme, which is very good news.
