The Lib Dems have a knack of swinging wildly on the side of public opinion (e.g., Iraq War) and back to the fringes (e.g., Revoke Policy). The latter is often buoyed by coming off the back successful elections, giving the party a false sense of confidence that such policies are far more popular than they are and indeed we can be the party of governance. Though such fringe policies have a lasting and damaging impact. Easy to make accusations that the party is neither "Liberal" or "Democratic" is easy to make when such positions are taken and particularly when the ...

June 2014 books

This is the latest post in a series I started in late 2019, anticipating the twentieth anniversary of my bookblogging which will fall in 2023. Every six-ish days, I've been revisiting a month from my recent past, noting work and family developments as well as the books I read in that month. I've found it a pleasantly cathartic process, especially in recent circumstances. If you want to look back at previous entries, they are all tagged under bookblog nostalgia. I started the month relaxing at my sister's in Burgundy: ...had a Worldcon planning trip to London midmonth: ...and ended with ...

[IMG: Grants drawer (https://stock.adobe.com/uk/search/free By MarekPhotoDesign.com)] Residents facing financial hardship this winter can now get support from Folkestone & Hythe District Council, if they qualify. The council has been awarded funding from Kent County Council for the Household Support Fund (HSF), which is provided by the government and runs until 31 March 2022 (subject to fund availability). Anyone aged 16 or over and living in the district in a vulnerable household may be eligible for a payment. Vulnerable households are defined as those that are struggling to afford essential food and utility bills and have no other available support. Grants ...

Covid cases have been soaring across the UK and England just a few days ago been plummeting towards another lockdown or circuit breaker. We seemed destined to have a cracking Christmas followed by a New Year's Eve singing Auld Lang Syne at a social distanced. Yesterday, though, there was better news. Separate analyses published by Imperial College and Edinburgh University concurred with research funded by the South African Medical Research Council and a modelling exercise by a Danish institute. All four studies suggest Omicron will lead to less severe illness than Delta and less hospitalisation. The results, which are provisional, ...

Norfolk has a huge history of churches, this is a beautiful example in Bracton Ash, St Nicholas. So calm so interesting additions that look out of character such as this porch, and extension that reminds me of Georgian Bath.

Lib Dems are asking the Government to introduce an Emergency Volunteering Leave scheme – urgently. This would allow volunteers to take time off work, but still be paid, to help with the booster vaccinations over the holiday season. Last week the NHS said it needs 40,000 volunteers for roles such as admin support and stewards, while vaccination centres say they are desperate for staff. Meanwhile, the British Medical Association has warned there could be up to 50,000 staff absences in the NHS by Christmas. We also know that there are plenty of people willing to volunteer. We need to put ...

[IMG: Castle Road Car Park to seafront stepped access] For many years, Sandgate Parish Councillors and others have been pushing to install a ramp access from Sandgate's Castle Road Car Park to the seafront. Despite disabled bays in the car park, there is currently "step only" access, making it really hard for wheelchairs, buggies and cycles to get from car park to seafront. Repeated requests to the District Council to resolve the problem have thrown up issue after issue, including ownership, access and more. However, we're delighted to say that a resolution has been found for the issue. Following discussions ...

As if we needed yet nore bad news, the Guardian reports that energy bills could rise as much as 50% in the spring as the UK faces a "national crisis" over soaring wholesale gas and electricity prices. The paper says that the trade body Energy UK has called on the government to intervene to help cut the cost of bills as these price increases drive dozens of energy companies out of business: "Domestic energy prices are going to go up 45% to 50% in the spring," warned Emma Pinchbeck, the chief executive of Energy UK, speaking on BBC Radio 4's ...

Amongst the worries about the pandemic, despite the concerns of the present, beyond the developments in our politics, there is the personal. Whether an individual can make a difference, and that he or she ought to and should, there is the essence of a Liberalism we can favour. This year has been the centenary of the birth of Sir Peter Ustinov. This is a man who made a difference. As a performer versatile enough to be an actor and an entertainer, he delighted in numerous productions on stage and screen. As a creator, he was a writer and director, who ...

Residents have contacted me about the terrible mess of bird droppings on the pavement and handrail on the left side of Mid Wynd. I asked the council to power wash this but also asked the landlord of the adjacent Ryehill flats to add measures to the building roof edge to stop pigeons perching at the roof edge.
