Agatha Christie's record-breaking play The Mousetrap, as a moving BBC Radio documentary reveals, has its roots in the death of the foster child Dennis O'Neill on a farm in the Shropshire hills in 1945. I once suggested that a play that was a scandalous success the same year and later made into film, No Room at the Inn, was inspired by the same sad incident. And a look at the theatre newspaper, The Stage, shows I was right. Its 5 July 1945 edition reported: Anthony Hawtrey is to present a new play, "No Room at the Inn," by Joan Temple, ...

A Lib Dem press release brings the news: Responding to the news that Neil Parish has resigned as Conservative MP after making tractor-based excuses for watching porn in Parliament, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Daisy Cooper said: It is appalling that Neil Parish had to be pushed to resign after those in charge of the Conservative Party spent days dragging their feet. This still leaves unanswered questions about Boris Johnson's leadership and his failure to trust the word of his female MPs. The Conservative party must now swiftly call a by-election, so the people of Tiverton and Honiton can finally get ...

"Partygate" has gone off the boii in the last few days, replaced in the media by indignation (and salacious fascination) at the misbehavours of several MPs. However, until this diversion (another "dead cat?") came to their rescue assorted ministers were trundling round the studios cravenly explaining that, compared with the "Big Calls" which their super-leader Johnson had "got right," a few patries were a relatively trivial affair that shouldn't worry us too much. Here's an examination of the"big calls." 1. PPE equipment. It has been a constant theme by government apologists throughout the pandemic that this is an unprecedented situation ...

No change! The 722 service is continuing to serve passengers on Tollgate Road and Parys Road every hour as it has done for a long while. However, an article in the Local Ludlow magazine which has been dropped off at homes in the area during the last few days states: "Minsterley Motors have changed the route of the 701 and 722 without consulting anyone. They now drive straight into town without going down Pary's [sic] Road without a bus service." I need to put the record straight. The route hasn't changed without "consulting anyone". The timetable and routing remains as ...

If Boris Johnson had any shred of decency left, he would tell Neil Parish to resign immediately. "In any other workplace this would count as ...
