When will the next general election be? Sorry, I don't know. But I do know that the range of plausible dates is wide open – from only a couple of months away through to January 2025. And that whenever the date is, we also have a massive round of local elections in May. Which is why we need to step up our campaigning, capacity building and planning through the second half of this year. Even if this Parliament goes its full term, the benefits of extra canvassing, member recruitment and training this summer will still be considerable. We certainly need ...

This week saw some fantastic results for Lib Dem teams in local by-elections - and in particular a couple of amazingly close second-place finishes in wards that we had not even contested in the previous election! The first results comes from South Staffordshire District Council where Lib Dem candidate Sam Harper-Wallis was just 10 votes off a sensational victory in Penkridge North East & Acton Trussel ward. This is even more impressive as the seat had been uncontested at the previous election. This goes to show the importance of always standing a candidate. We now have a great base to ...

I was quite depressed at the meeting of the Council last Wednesday. The Labour Party totally ignored the results of the flawed consultation that it had led and abolished the Elected Mayoralty, which is good, but introduced the least popular ... Continue reading →

Grant Shapps announced his campaign for leadership of the Conservative Party on 9 July 2022 and withdrew from the race on 12 July, If he doesn't get a seat in the new prime minister's cabinet he may return to his business activities. In that eventuality, this guide to his various aliases may prove invaluable. Friday As is widely known in Westminster circles, the Secretary of State for Transport has a history of trading under names other than his given one of Grant Shapps. When asked to list said names, many will come up with Michael Green, Corinne Stockheath and Sebastian ...

Councillors have welcomed the proposed "watershed review" in the ambulance crisis and related issues in Shropshire. The proposal for an inquiry into the growing delays with ambulances attending patients and handover times once the ambulances arrive at the county's two A&Es, was first made in February this year by Tracey Huffer. The chair of the Performance Management Scrutiny Committee told the council's cabinet on Wednesday that the review would take place over three days. The review is expected to look at: prevention, primary care and 111 arrival at A&E and admittance to hospital discharge from hospital. Tracey Huffer, Shropshire Councillor ...

Well, the BBC is really helping us to build up our profile of the young Liz Truss. (See Andy Boddington's post yesterday and mine on Wednesday, with all your comments.) And guess who she is leafleting with in this video.... It may be a fading memory, but nobody is going to allow Boris Johnson and his fellow Brexiteers to forget that they plastered on the side of a bus how our health service would benefit to the tune of £350m a week from us leaving the European Union. This was their wildly inaccuarate calculation based on the gross payments we were making into EU coffers at the time. For some reason nobody on their side mentioned the money that was flowing back into the UK, the economic benefits of membership and the financial settlement that was needed to finally sever ...
