One of the key sites of political radicalism during the English Civil War is now represented by a Liberal Democrat. As Mark Pack reports: Cllr Pippa Graeme, who has served as the councillor for Weybridge & St. George's ward at Elmbridge Borough Council since May 2023, has announced her decision to leave the Weybridge & St. George's Independents and join the Liberal Democrats. After much reflection, Pippa expressed her belief that the values and approach of the Liberal Democrats align closely with her own, reinforcing her commitment to work collaboratively and effectively for the benefit of local residents. Her ward ...

This video makes it look a long time ago - it was a long time ago - but one of the major decisions Harborough District Council took while I was a member was the redevelopment of the cattle market site in Market Harborough. It was a controversial decision and the farmers assured us the market was profitable. But when we offered them the chance to buy it, they went quiet. By all accounts, the new market site near Foxton did very well - having it in the town was not the visitor attraction that some claimed. The idea of allowing ...

Following the 95 local by-elections we saw on the undercard for the 1st May elections, we returned this week to a rather more sedentary two. On Thursday 8th May, there was a Labour defence in Calderdale, and a Liberal Democrat defence in Eastleigh. Although I am neither a theologian nor an expert on the teaching of the Church, I found the moment of choosing the next Pope deeply important. I would never shy away from the fact that faith plays an important part in my life. No, I am not better than anyone else because I believe. However, I find it extremely helpful to know that I have, to put it simply in lay terms, someone I can spiritually lean on or rely on. I am also aware that, as we live in a more secularised society, religion to some is becoming less ...

If you are reading this post, the chances are you can correctly recite the order in which the five main parties finished in the 2025 local elections, whether by seat number, council control or vote share. (And I bet a good number of you can get the difference between the PNS and NEV vote share figures too.) But what does the public know? Find Out Now has asked just this and here are the results: [IMG: table visualization] Two-thirds got it right that Reform UK came out top on number of seats. One should perhaps add 'only' at the start ...

The Joy of Six 1357

Gary Younge says the heroism of soldiers from India, Africa and the Caribbean is often airbrushed out of the history of the second world war: "About 2.5 million personnel from the Indian subcontinent, more than 1 million African-Americans, 1 million people from Africa and tens of thousands of people from the Caribbean fought for the allies during the second world war. Among them were people of almost every religion." Tim Leunig warns that curtailing international student migration will make Britain poorer: "In recent work with my Public First colleagues we discovered that there are over 100 constituencies where the local ...

2025 Elections review

The most ardent foot solders are just about recovered from last week's local elections and coalition deals are taking shape so it's a good time to look at the results. The broadcast media seems to be obsessed with Reform at the moment, I have my own take on why they're so successful at the moment but of course I'm more focussed on the Lib Dems performance. Hopefully I can give you a broad view about how all the parties are faring and what it all means. Sought after locations Bishop's Castle in Shropshire, Chalgrove in Oxfordshire, Ely in Cambridgeshire – ...

For years, many of us have been asking what it would take for the British government to officially recognise Palestine - in order to delegitimise the Israeli annexation of the West Bank and Gaza, and usher in the end of the territorial ambitions of Israel's far-right. Well, now we know it's not Israel bombing Gaza flat in a lethal campaign involving deliberately targeting schools, universities and hospitals, killing tens of thousands of civilians including humanitarian workers, ignoring and disrespecting the UN and the International Court of Justice (ICJ), and adding starvation as a war tactic. The current British government has ...

The Guardian reports that more than 40 Labour MPs have warned the prime minister that planned disability cuts are "impossible to support" and have called for a pause and change in direction. The paper says that the letter from parliamentarians spanning the new intake and veterans, and from the left and right of the party, has set Keir Starmer up for the biggest rebellion of his premiership when the House of Commons votes on the measures next month: There has already been widespread concern among Labour MPs about proposed changes including a significant tightening of eligibility for personal independent payments ...
