If you like walking you're going to meet a lot of sheepdogs. Fortunately, I like border collies - they are serious working dogs, yet they will lie on their backs at the slightest sign of fussing and wave their paws in the air. And, while I suppose I can imagine one nipping your heels, I can't imagine a sheepdog perpetrating serious violence. Before the Three Tuns in Bishop's Castle was modernised in the Nineties, I used to go there with a friend and his young daughter. There were always a couple of old farmers in the front bar with their ...
Fight back against American imperialism from the comfort of your own arm chair and in your own High Street. Trump misunderstands the nature of international trade. He sees things simply in the context of the trade of goods and reports that many countries have a big trade surplus with the USA. That is, of course correct. There are often good reasons for this. Some places have better human and physical resources. Some places are just cheaper. Some places have better and more adaptable work force. These are the normal cut and thrust of trade. It happens with shops competing on ...
This month's publication of research into how Britons feel about the region in which they live makes fascinating reading. It also contains a warning for champions of local government reorganisation and planning reform in England. Only in one English region, the North-East, does the research show that people have a strong attachment (48%) to their region. Midlanders show the least feeling for where they live. Just 13% of West Midlanders and 11% of East Midlanders hold a very strong attachment to their respective region. Only 7% of people in the West Midlands believe our region is a better place to ...
My old school the Robert Smyth Academy, as it's now called, produces a Welcome to Your New School brochure. In it we learn: Pastoral care and guidance is at the heart of our school system. Your child will join one of four established college groups and this community will include key staff who will support their progress through school. Is the brochure aimed at pupils or parents? Anyway, these colleges sound like the houses the school had in my day. And the good news is that one of the colleges is called Logan College: Logan college is named in celebration ...

On the subject of Welsh hymn writers, one of the more prolific Swansea scribes was Frances Ridley Havergal, and yet I suspect that not many people in the city are aware of her. I first became curious very early on in my Swansea residency when walking down to Caswell Bay I came across Havergal House and the plaque commemorating her contribution to religious verse. This Mumbles history site takes up her story: In the village of Newton, at the top of the hill that leads down to Caswell, a plaque in the wall of the house on the right states ...
