I expect most of us will be holding our breath as Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin meet in Alaska tomorrow. Heavens above, Trump doesn't even know his own territory, saying on Monday that he was "going to Russia", so the thought that he could carve up anyone else's is really scary. Ed Davey has described the summit as a "perilous moment." This is a perilous moment for Europe as two of the most unreliable Presidents imaginable seem to think they can carve up Ukraine amongst themselves without any word from the Ukrainian people. Even at this late hour I hope ...

Natural England has announced the creation of a new Stiperstones Landscape National Nature Reserve. The expanded reserve is more than three times the area of the original Stiperstones reserve. It brings together six partner organisations to safeguard precious heathland, ancient woodland, bogs and acidic grasslands on the border of England and Wales. One of the six organisations is the Middle Marches Community Land Trust. Its chair, Dr Richard Keymer, says: "Middle Marches Community Land Trust is delighted that the Stiperstones National Nature Reserve is to be extended and will include 2 areas of land that we own, Minsterley Meadows and ...

The Joy of Six 1395

[IMG: St Nicholas church and the Jewry Wall, Leicester] "Why did this person decide to open a home in my ward? Well, there is a lot of evidence around now that these are not people with altruistic ideas, they don't want to change the lives of a frightened young girl, they don't want to change society. What drives many people to move into this area of activity is pure simple greed. They see the opportunity to make money out of other people's suffering."Richard Kemp says making profits from the needs of SEND children should be illegal. Bill Wyman itemises without ...

The meaning of money

Money has been around longer than writing. So it's difficult to know for sure when, why and how the idea of money first came into being. But whoever came up with it, whether it was the Mesopotamians with their shekels or the native Africans with their cowrie shells, I'm pretty sure they didn't know what they were getting us all into. The Guardian reports that a former cabinet minister believes that the UK government is "digging itself into a hole" over Palestine Action and fellow Labour peers and MPs are regretting voting to ban the group. The paper says that the warning by Peter Hain, who opposed proscription, came as a Labour backbencher who supported it said the issue would arise again when parliament returned in September: Lord Hain, who was a leader of the anti-apartheid movement and the Anti-Nazi League in Britain during the 1970s and 1980s, was lacerating about the response to recent protests in support of Palestine Action. ...
