Steve from What Once Was takes us to Ingarsby, one of the best preserved deserted medieval villages in the country, and explores the site thoroughly. It lies six miles from Leicester, in beautiful, empty countryside that is typical of the eastern side of its county. The site's entry on the National Heritage List for England says: The village earthworks at Ingarsby are exceptionally well preserved with a wide diversity of features and good documentation with the rare mention of the construction of a pond. Ingarsby is also interesting as being the site of a moated manor that was subsequently purchased ...
North Yorkshire anti-fracking campaigners welcome new Lib Dem climate and nature policy
The Liberal Democrats' new Climate and Nature policy For People, For Planet, adopted at Bournemouth, has won approval from anti-cracking campaigners in Yorkshire, reports York Mix: Chris Garforth, from Frack Free Coastal Communities, said: "Finally, a clear-cut, no-nonsense proposal from a major political party that leaves none of the wiggle room that oil and gas companies and politicians have been using to their advantage for so long. "Time now for Ed Miliband and the Labour government to take a similar unequivocal stand for the climate, environment and economy." This praise, explains the website, comes as North Yorkshire Council is assessing ...
Labour...the real nasty party! Famously, at the 2002 Conservative Party Conference, the then Tory Chairman and future Prime Minister Theresa May called her own party 'the nasty party.' Or, to be fair, it's what she said many people called the Tories. And she was right, we did and we do. I should point out, this isn't about individual Conservatives a number of whom I count as friends (indeed, I co-host a podcast with one) but rather about their policies-in government and opposition-over many decades. Kicking the poor whilst they're down, being less than friendly (to say the least) in regards ...
Schuyler Mitchell argues that the national security state is a wonderful tool for a skilled authoritarian to crush American democracy: "If you tell an FBI agent to proactively go out and find anarchists, violent extremists, before they can act, they're going to look for someone with that ideology. Now you have Trump telling people to go out and look for antifa, which means they can be opening assessments on people who they, for whatever reason, feel have this nebulous, broad ideology." "Arendt did not strive for consensus - in her view, politics had to be antagonistic and, if needed, controversial. ...
There has been a lot of discourse around the new voting age brought in by Labour, and as a 17-year-old I was worried this would boost Reform. While polling data from Yougov suggests Farage is typically less and less popular the younger the age group, I haven't seen anyone consider that the under 18s voting next election - assuming one isn't called early - are currently 12 and 13. I know from personal experience Mr Farage has extremely high exposure among these children, making a fool of himself on TikTok, and occasionally through clips on the website Cameo (few would ...
Through the Adversity, the Stars Royal Air Force Motto The history of the politics of Space has always been colourful. I was reminded of this when I recently stood in the Imperial War Museum in London looking up at a V2 rocket that stands prominently in the lower hall. It remains a disquieting fact that the first man-made vehicle to breach the Karman Line (the widely though not universally agreed line between Earth's atmosphere and Space) was a V2 rocket, designed by the SS Colonel and Nazi scientist Dr Werner Von Braun. Years later, Dr Braun met his public downfall ...
What is the antidote to populism? That was the question for one of the fringe meetings I spoke at during the Lib Dem conference in Bournemouth, organised by the IPPR. Here's what I had to say, along with MP Calum Miller and Financial Times's Miranda Green: Watch on YouTube here. The role of the resident survey is something I wrote more about in 2023. Keep up with news about Lib Dem conferences If you'd like to hear more news about conferences, just sign up for my monthly newsletter, Liberal Democrat Newswire, with its regular news about these and other party ...

Blink and you may have missed it, but one of Nigel Farage's allies has plead guilty to taking bribes to ask questions on behalf of Russia in the European Parliament, a case according to the police that goes to the heart of our democracy. Back in 2012, Nathan Gill, was a rising star in Nigel Farage's former outfit, UKIP. He organised the party in Anglesey, North Wales and whilst they didn't break through in the 2013 local elections, he clearly made a name for himself because later in the year he was selected as the UKIP candidate in the Ynys ...

The Guardian has an excellent article on the dangers created by mandatory digital ID cards in which a cybersecurity expert warns that the plan risks creating "an enormous hacking target". The paper quotes Alan Woodward, a professor and cybersecurity expert at the University of Surrey, who says that if the data is also held on a vast database to allow for cross-referencing, "it's painting a huge target on something to say 'come and hack me'": The government has not yet provided detail on how it would make the system work, sparking calls for greater transparency. Woodward's warning comes amid rising ...
