Adoptable Commodities

Gravatar At first when I was told by people that they thought that Social Services were driven by a desire to increase adoption, hence they would take more children into care to get them adopted, I did not believe this. Having spent a bit more time on the issue, having noted that when Downs Syndrome children are born Social Services disappear, having noted the use of the phrase "adoptable commodity" by

A New Blog… And It’s About Time

Gravatar I’ve previously mentioned Doctor Who Magazine’s Time Team, a splendid project reviewing the whole of Doctor Who. After sending in my ‘reader’s thoughts’ for some years, I’ve now created a blog to record them all. Fifteen years ago today, the BBC finally got round to broadcasting the experimental Pilot episode of Doctor Who, judged unsuccessful at the time and remade before the series started – the only piece of TV Doctor Who the Time Team don’t cover. This seems an opportune moment to start this selection. So, I’ve started a new blog: Next Time, I Shall Not Be So Lenient! ...

Derby defections

Gravatar A press release from Cowley Street celebrates the mass defection of Labour members to the Liberal Democrats in Margaret Beckett's Derby South constituency. Their decision could be particularly significant in view of the result there last time: Margaret Beckett (Labour) 19,683 45.4%Lucy Care (Liberal Democrat) 14,026 32.3%David Brackenbury (Conservative) 8,211 18.9%Majority 5,657 13.0%However,

Words to be banned from the LibDems

Gravatar Fair, fairness and their similes. What on earth does it mean? Too many people view this differently, from those who say its fair for government to enforce equality of income and outcome (which is the road to authoritarian rule) to people who say its fair for people to be completely independent and do what they like (the road to anarchy). Fairness is a term which is too easily abused, and too

Judicial Review - Answer the question - documents on web

Gravatar I have put the main documents on the web. Be very careful if you wish to download the government's responses as they are massive files because they have been scanned in. (See the link).

Bridges and Walls

Gravatar Blogging, as I do, from High Wycombe is an interesting perspective at the moment. There’s an air of disbelief at the arrest of bomb plot suspects. There’s still a trickle of pro-BNP comments arriving in my inbox in reply to a post I made a couple of months ago. There’s so many misconceptions and falsehoods [...]

Goalkeeper gets caution for gestures and "crossing himself"

Gravatar Posting updated at 18:07 26/8/06 This is an interesting story on BBC News. "Artur Boruc (the Celtic goalkeeper) was cautioned for a breach of the peace over (an) incident at an Old Firm match at Ibrox in February...the Crown Office said the decision was based on the player's behaviour, rather than a single act. In addition to crossing himself, the player was alleged to have made gestures to the

Lord Clement-Jones raises autism issues

Gravatar You can see what he had to say about Autism during the debate on Autism in the House of Lords here. Much of what he had to say makes sense. The numbers of cases of Autism have soared in recent years. Whether this is because the number of people with Autism has soared or whether it is because the diagnosis has improved or a combination of the two is difficult to say. What is clear is that resources are needed to help people with Autism and other Learning Disabilities and their families and carers. Without that money it is difficult ...

Dangermouse

Gravatar My eldest daughter pointed out that Dangermouse was dated by the evil supercomputer saying "kneel before my 500 Megabytes". When I was a lad ... we had the SDK 85 which was programmed in machine code and had a memory counted in K.

Is Adam Boulton mad?

Gravatar The man has just got married to Anji Hunter. He has been on a wonderful honeymoon in Micronesia. And yet he has been blogging from his holiday! Is he mad? It is worth looking at some photos (all very proper) of Anji Hunter. I can honestly guarantee that if I ever get the chance to go on a holiday with my good lady wife (let alone a honeymoon with Anji Hunter) in Micronesia, I will not go near a

Proof that Norman Lamb MP's Village surgeries are on course!

Gravatar You may be wondering why I have been silent from the blogosphere for the last two weeks. Then again, you might not be wondering. Either way, I can tell you that two weeks ago I quietly slipped my mooring in Blogoland and went under-cover and, indeed, incognito to North Norfolk to conduct vital, exhaustive and clandestine tests of the preparations for Norman Lamb MP's tour of the villages in the

The Place is Cold - 1

Gravatar A lot of the Lib Dem Bloggers have been commenting on the Pluto controversy. Of course it's the astrologers who are going to be in a real panic over this. This comes from www.astro.com in 2001, where a couple of astrologers are discussing the Saturn-Pluto opposition (i.e. the arrangement that Saturn and Pluto are in opposite parts of the sky: Nick Campion: To start with, Liz, I’d like to talk a

Defections in Derby

Gravatar Yesterday afternoon 37 members of the Labour Party defected to the Liberal Democrats in Margaret Beckett, the Foreign Secretary's constituency of Derby South. The defection is over how Beckett and Labour have handled the Middle East crisis. I don't know the exact details of what happened but after dealing with defections - mass defections in Birmingham and the defection of an MP in Shrewsbury I would urge caution.

"Huge victory" claimed over Hair's letter

Gravatar Warning: This blog contains idle and unfounded speculation. There's a surprise. The Pakistani Cricket team manager Zaheer Abbas has claimed a "huge victory" after the revelation of Darren Hair's letter to the ICC when he offered to resign for a $500,000 pay-off. I am delighted that Mr Abbas thinks this and that, with the postponement of the ICC hearing into the cases against Inzamam-ul-Haq, it

The BBC talks "crap"

Gravatar In case you have missed it, it is worth going to BBC Radio presenter Eddie Mair's blog where he has left a recording of various BBC broadcasters saying the word "crap" in connection with John Prescott's reported comments about George Bush. It is a classic. Charlotte Green is one of the "crappers". A poster to the message board has said that she makes the word "crap" sound like "honey". The

Vote for the Big Fluffy Heffalump!

Gravatar I have cast my vote in the LibDem Blogger of the Year contest. I have voted for the Big Fluffy Heffalump! My citation read: "The Fluffy Elephant is unerringly spot on about current political matters, he combines a highly amusing way of writing with a seering ability to get to the heart of matters." You only have to read Heffalump's posting from yesterday about Mrs Bucket. It is hilarious. As
