Hands off Iran!

Gravatar The BBC World Service this evening put on a briefing on Iran, in the grandiose surroundings of Committee Room 10 in the Houses of Parliament. An unlikely cross-party trio of peers — Avebury (LibDem), Lamont (Conservative) and Temple-Morris (Labour) — were in the audience as my old Bush House colleague, the BBC diplomatic correspondent Jonathan [...]

News!!

Gravatar “What is this life if, full of care, We have no time to stand and stare? No time to stand beneath the boughs. And stare as long as sheep and cows. No time to see, when woods we pass, Where squirrels hid their nuts in grass. No time to see, in broad daylight. Streams full of stars, like skies at night. No time to turn at Beauty’s glance. And watch her feet, how they can dance. No time to wait till her mouth can. Enrich that smile her eyes began. A poor life this if, full of ...

Being against grammar schools is not enough

Gravatar Various Lib Dem bloggers are celebrating David Willett's announcement that the Conservatives no longer believe in grammar schools. For instance, Norfolk Blogger writes: David Cameron has highlighted that Grammar schools are full of middle class kids. This is a glaring admission that selection favour's (sic) the middle classes at the expense of the poor.Unfortunately, that is true. But the trouble is that the best performing comprehensives are full of middle class kids too, as this news release from the Sutton Trust shows. In the words of the charity's founder Sir Peter Lampl:These findings starkly underline the extent of ...

Youth Communications

Gravatar It's been a while since I mentioned Youth Communications. I am chair of this organisation, which was set up to work with young people to provide journalism experience and an outlet for the views of young people across the City. The aim has been to produce a magazine, written and edited by young people. Well, we are nearly there. The first issue should be out in June.. and we have secured an interview with McFly for the cover story! Sam, one of the young people involved, is doing the interview tomorrow. We met this evening to go over some ...

Gordon Brown: No contest, no debate

Gravatar So it's going to be a coronation: Gordon Brown has secured the backing of enough MPs to ensure he will not face a contest to become the next Labour leader and prime minister.Mr Brown has 308 nominations prompting his only rival, left-winger John McDonnell, to concede. He was 16 nominations short of the 45 required.Mr McDonnell said he was disappointed on behalf of Labour Party members and it was a "blow to democracy".I'm no fan of John McDonnell, but I think he is right. The lack of a contest or even a debate will reawaken every doubt that the wider ...

The world wide what?

Gravatar Writing from the blogging capital of Sandwell, it’s sometimes easy to forget that the whole world hasn’t joined the blogosphere. Having said that, I’m glad to read it’s not just me who thinks it’s strange a judge in an internet case has never heard of the term ‘website’.

Blogging break

Gravatar My blogging has been thin on the ground recently. A post-election rest, a Eurovision party, holiday booking and football playing have taken over. Also, an interesting opportunity has arisen at work, which I can’t blog about at the moment, but hopefully can in a few weeks! Normal service will be resumed… soon.

All hail Brown (except the Labour membership and the trade unions…)

Gravatar I couldn’t help but smirk when I heard Gordon Brown say he would welcome a leadership contest. The membership at large seemed to be crying out for the debate that the Tories and ourselves have both had in the last few years, thanks to a leadership contest. I personally wanted a Labour leadership contest to watch [...]

Chard in Bloom

Gravatar This is a first - a blog entry about something that is going to happen!! I had the distinctive pleasure of presenting the Chard in Bloom organisers with a sum of money to help them toward the magnificent job they do, purely voluntarily, every year in making Chard look so fantastic in bloom! Whilst I was speaking with them it occurred to me that as a County Council that collects mountains of compost-able waste every week, and one who has just entered into a relationship with a waste services provider, that we could, if so minded, arrange to have ...

Don't you just hate it when someone trips over and the first thing they do is call a lawyer ?

John Ruskin and pubic hair

Gravatar Today's Guardian carries the welcome news that Tate Britain is to mount an exhibition devoted to the work of John Everett Millais. It will open on 26 September 2007 and close on 13 January 2008. The paper's report has the story about the model for his Ophelia catching pneumonia. It further says that her father insisted that Millais pay her medical bills. But it does not have the story about Millais's first application to the Royal Academy. He was a child prodigy and one of the examiners suggested that he should be sweeping chimneys instead. Another story is ...

Credit where credit is due - Well done David Cameron on Grammar Schools

Gravatar I think, on the whole, that David Cameron is a vacuous politician who thinks more about style than substance and whose main policy seems to be "look at me, I'm like tony Blair, but nicer". However, today he has made completely the right decision on Grammar schools and deserves praise for doing so. David Cameron has highlighted that Grammar schools are full of middle class kids. This is a glaring admission that selection favours the middle classes at the expense of the poor. The Tory party have a long way to go on this and David Cameron ...

What hope for justice with out of touch judges ?

Gravatar Radio Five Live reported earlier on their Drive show that a judge called Peter Openshaw had to halt proceedings in a case he is presiding over involving using the internet to incite terrorism because he did not understand the words being used. In particular, the words he was having a problem with was "web page" and "website", according to Five Live. Isn't it absolutely astonishing that a judge put in charge of a case in which the internet is central to the alleged crime does not know what the internet actually is ?

Jonathan Meades: Abroad Again again

Gravatar I have just watched the second - rather sombre - programme in the series Jonathan Meades: Abroad Again. There is a good review of the first on Off the Telly: Lord Reith was a Presbyterian Scot, a Wee Free wallah, among whose folks the most timid involvement in sensual pleasures had you hellbound. Strange, then, that perhaps the greatest living embodiment of Reith's dictum "inform, entertain, educate" should be a bohemian epicure from Salisbury who extols indulgence in food and architecture. Jonathan Meades' new series from BBC Scotland (the irony!) looks very much like further confirming this stature, ...

Irish General Election

Gravatar The Irish General Election is coming up soon - it's on Thursday 24 May 2007. Last time round it sort of passed by my sister, who lives between Carlow and Kilkenny. Except, that is, for one event. She was out shopping with her five children and husband when they stopped for a coffee break. As the children were racing round, shopping bags spilt over and general mayhem was erupting, a smartly dressed man walked up to Penny and shook her hand. He then talked to Dom for a few minutes and shared a joke with the children. As ...

Some questions about Scotland

Gravatar A nagging question in my mind is: why was the late swing in Scotland earlier this month to the SNP and not to the Lib Dems? Following yesterday's FPC meeting I am none the wiser. But I vividly recall the speaker from Scotland in the Trident debate in March who told the Federal Conference that the Scottish Lib Dems really, really did not want to retain Trident. And I have been told that a balloon shaped like a Trident missile was being towed round Edinburgh's streets during the election. A very effective campaigning tool, I ...

Dealing With Food Waste

Gravatar I'm really excited by an estate-based composting project I went to visit in Hackney last week. Hopefully we can roll out something similar on our housing estates. Actually it's not really about composting - or at least that's not the main attraction for residents. It's about rat reduction! The organisers believe, and the residents confirm, that everyone will buy into recycling of kitchen waste if vermin eradication is the main goal. Compost is simply a fabulous by-product. The Nightingale Estate in Hackney is right next to a railway line and as a result used to be ...

Police on hand

Gravatar The police are changing the way they do their community forum events. And it can only be a good idea. A lot of effort has been put into organising the events in the past - with senior police and police authority representatives in large venues with (sometimes) catering. And the turnout by members of the public has been really poor. Now that's not to say they wouldn't have had issues to raise.. merely that the prospect of sitting in an evening meeting is probably not that attractive. Anyway, now the police have decided to ...

Sport and politics will always go together

Gravatar The Australian Government has banned the national cricket team from playing against Zimbabwe. Australian PM John Howard threatened to seize the players’ passports if they didn’t fall in line, claiming that their presence in Zimbabwe would be a “propaganda boost” to the “grubby dictator” Robert Mugabe. It’s been a popular decision; MPs from across the political spectrum tabled an early day motion in Parliament welcoming the move. Gravatar New insider blog, Ministerial Briefs, reports that the deadline for recalling the Assembly in readiness for a Wednesday 30 May meeting to elect a First Minister is Friday 25 May. This is going to cause a few problems for those parties committed to consulting their members on any deal. Welsh Liberal Democrats are due to convene a special conference on Saturday 26 May in Aberystwyth. I believe that Plaid Cymru's Council will be meeting on the same day.
