Ex UKIP MEP claimed to be fighting EU fraud, but happy to defraud the UK tax payer

Gravatar Ashley Mote, elected as a UKIP MEP just three years ago has been found guilty of fraud. In this case UKIP took decisive action to ensure he was no part of their party, but after other UKIP MEP's problems involving fraud, it would make anyone wonder why electing a UKIP MEP serves any purpose at all.

Port Talbot redevelopment - what will it mean?

Gravatar The County Borough Council has invited proposals for the redevelopment of an area including Port Talbot railway station and the Plaza cinema. The extent of the area involved seems somewhat fluid at this stage, but it may well extend to commercial properties with past local Liberal Democrat involvement ;-) One hopes that the level crossing, a nuisance to both commercial traffic and pedestrians alike, will disappear under the preferred plans. However, a place should be found for at least the façade of the Plaza. It is sad that neither Neath nor Port Talbot town centres can support a first-run cinema, ...

Baltizer Bexley

Gravatar A rare restaurant review. Last night Grace and I went for a curry in the Baltizer Bexley. Bexley village has a large number of places to go for a night out. There are two indian restaurants (as well as a takeaway) the Maharajah of Bexley, which I used to go to 30 years ago. But very nearby is the Baltizer - in the railway arches just across the car park entrance. I started with spicy poppadoms,

Buying alcohol when you are under 18 ...

Gravatar ... is illegal, of course. The Trading Standards people and Police at Kingston have for many years worked with a small group of under 18s who make test purchases. But some young people try to get round this by hanging around outside off...

Summer of British Film: Costume drama

Gravatar This week's leg of the marathon takes us into costume drama. So a few random notes follow. I liked Billy Connolly in Mrs Brown, but I have never understood why Judi Dench is rated so highly. I have seen a television programme about Prunella Scales's one-woman show on Queen Victoria and found her take on the old girl far more convincing. And remember: my family knows a thing or two about Queen Victoria and Balmoral. I have not seen a Ken Russell film from the last 25 years that is not a howling mess. Even so The Rainbow is the ...

Two great Britons

Gravatar Last week saw the untimely deaths from cancer of two men who contributed significantly to British life, albeit in completely different ways. Tim Garden - Air Marshal Lord Garden - was the Liberal Democrats’ defence spokesperson in the House of Lords, and his distinguished service in the RAF and at the Ministry of Defence gave real credibility to the party on defence issues. In 2004, the same year he became a life peer, Tim contributed his knowledge to the BBC series Crisis Command, acting as one of the contestants’ expert advisers. I met him once, briefly, in a packed lift ...

Rubber wheels on my train - I must be heading home

Gravatar The more I think about the Redwood plan for rail, the more I think the Tories must be mad for ever letting this man anywhere near policy making. There used to be a time, admittedly probably well over 15 years ago, when the Conservatives at least had some media sense. Other parties were the victims of what used to be a well oiled Tory machine that would jump on any small gaffe such as rubber

Sally Hannon

Gravatar Thanks to Paul Walter for pointing out that todays Guardian carries an "Other Lives" obituary of my Liberator editorial collective colleague Sally Hannon: She was, as a colleague said, a remarkably unstuffy mayor, cycling to some engagements - one of those being unannounced calls at police stations to check on how people under arrest were being treated. In 2004 she was elected chair of Thames Valley Police Authority. She often joined officers on patrol late at night on Christmas or New Year's Eve.It is written by her father Philip Arnold. The CPS felt there wasn't enough evidence to take any action. I think even the repeated lateness shouldn't be allowed to go unpunished, whether the other misdemeanors could be proven or not. What is the difference between Glasgow Airport and One Railway ?

Gravatar Okay, I know there is a massive difference, one is a railway company and one is an airport operator. But they also treat employees very differently too. A few weeks ago an employee at Glasgow airport famously punched a suspected terrorist in the face and was quite rightly heralded for his heroism and public spirited nature. His bosses at the Airport were no doubt delighted. A one railway employee faced with a drunkard yob who was threatened passengers and was violent was lunged at by the drunkard, the was a clash of head, and the drunkard fell to the floor. ...

Tories pursue social justice by abolishing tax 94% of people do not pay

Gravatar After much heavy trailing, the Conservative policy group on Economic Competitiveness, today finally published its report. The headline that the Conservatives are pushing is a call for Inheritance Tax to be abolished, on the grounds that too many middle-income earners are now paying it. As house prices have continued to rise very fast in recent years, it is true that the number of estates qualifying to pay inheritance tax has risen. So have they got a point? Well, according to the BBC, “no inheritance tax is currently payable on 94% of estates, according to official figures”. (more…)

This is the regime the Tories refused to take action against in the 1980's

Gravatar As time passes there are many who would wish us to forget a lot of what went on in the Thatcher years. Sales of weapons parts and support for Iraq, deals with the dictator General Pinochet in Chile and perhaps the most obviously shameful act of the Thatcher government, the refusal to impose sanctions on South Africa. Evidence that the smoking ban is cutting smoking overall

Gravatar When the ban on smoking in public was announced, many said it wouldn't reduce smoking at all whilst some idiots used the most unpleasant of threats that "Okay , I'll smoke in front of my kids at home more then". The main argument constantly was that it would have no effect on smoking levels overall. The facts, however, to not bare that out. Inheritance tax: of course we should abolish it

Gravatar Much discussion on the TV and in the press overnight about will-he won't-he George Osborne endorsing John Redwood's idea of abolishing inheritance tax. There has been a protracted discussion about this in Lib Dem circles over the last year or so as well. The irony is though that many of those that want it abolished do so because it is usually the "family home" that pushes an estate into IHT liability. Ironic because of all the possible assets one might have accumulated in one's life, the value of one's property is the most likely to have been "unearned". Many proponents ...

London politics in primary colours?

Gravatar I find it fascinating that Tories appear to have leapt on this speculation that Labour might be attempting to rig the Conservative primary for London Mayor. If it is true, then Labour is full of even more morons than I thought. You would have thought they learnt from their attempts to stitch up the Today programme Christmas poll in 1996. Those Redwood tax cuts - a question of priorities

Gravatar I’ve been going down the list of tax cuts that John Redwood is proposing. Scrapping inheritance tax, lowering corporation tax, raising the super tax threshold, restricting capital gains… to be brutally honest, I regard all of these as good things in principle, but even leaving aside the affordability issue, how can they be said to be priorities? Inheritance tax, for example, certainly does hit a lot of middle-income families these days. But what would you prefer? A tax cut on your estate when you die, or a tax cut on your income now? I know that I for one would ...

But Britain cannot just be the City of London and then 50-odd million people living off the back of those who work in financial services.” This line has clearly been carefully crafted to simultaneously look like a genuine concern for the poor, while making it absolutely clear to the city that the Tories not only are not having a go at it, but consider it to be the main source of wealth. According to this rubric, ...
