BTV outbreak

Gravatar Farmers in the South West have been dealt a fresh blow in their fight against a disease that is proving fatal to their livestock. Following reports of two new outbreaks in Greater London and Middlesex a restriction zone has now been put in place around North East Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire and parts of Dorset. A spokesman for Defra has warned of further outbreaks in the coming weeks and advice to farmers is; test all animals and spray vehicles with an insecticide. Arent these the same experts who, back in December, said there was a low ...

Should a tax haven abuser be allowed to own a bank

Gravatar The answer, from the Grauniad to the Daily Mail, is no. Peter Welch has been nobly reading the Mail so that we don’t have to, and reports on the spat currently taking place between Our Vince and Sir Richard Branson. To have a Liberal Democrat present the case for the opposition here is, as Peter says, [...]

Gravatar So its goodbye to the Year of the Pig and welcome into the year of the Rat. Here in Bath our East Asian Community have been building up their communiity group - BEACH - Bath East Asian Chinese - or four years now. Gravatar Cadbury's - as readers of this blog will know - have decided to cease manufacturing at Keynsham and produce products for the UK market in Poland. And then they have the gall to attend a Carbon Footprint reduction conference as a speaker on the subject. So what about all those transport miles bringing chocolate bars to the UK What about the destruction of a loyal workforce in...

From russia with loath

Gravatar The Independent on Saturday led with a chilling front page about how Russian President and putative Czar, Vladimir Putin, spoke of a 'new phase' in the arms race with NATO which Russia would respond to in kind. The article went on to outline how the Russians have been taking increasingly aggressive steps militarily, including testing missiles in the Bay of Biscay and sending military flights deep into the Pacific. Well 'whoooooooh'! Only in the second article on this subject, the reliably good analysis tucked away at the bottom of page, did a degree of context creep in, in other words ...

Gravatar Brian Paddick is on Straight Talk on BBC News 24 at 10:30pm tonight (10 February), talking head to head with Andrew Neil for 24 minutes and 13 seconds. If you miss the show you can watch it via the BBC’s iPlayer for the next seven days.

The day the lib dems died

Gravatar According to the Independent (it was, are you) Nick Clegg has declared that he could support a Cameron Conservative Government if it promoted 'genuinely liberal policies'. The paper goes on to note that this declaration is likely to anger party activists who are hostile to the Tories. DIfficult to know whether to respond with 'Duuh!' or 'Too f***ing right!'. Neither seem quite strong enough. I voted for Nickers primarily because he was the only candidate to declare a real ambition for us to win an election outright, which is what I want. Don't we all If not, shouldn't we all ...

Warwick District Cheated by Labour.

Gravatar This week the government voted on its Local Government Settlement. Now many of us may think that all our council tax goes to Warwick District Council and they use it to pay for our services. Well its not as simple as that. A huge slice of it goes off to Whitehall and they give some of it back in terms of grants. Of course a lot of our money leaks out in terms of costs and layers of bureaucracy. This way the Government manages to keep control of what our councils are spending our money on. So, this week the ...

Rowan Williams and the Mastery of Politics

Gravatar The Archbishop of Canterbury is not feted for his deft political touch nor would he want to be. He has been cursed, by fellow bloggers as well as by print journalists, with the most opprobrious epithet applicable to someone in public life: hes academic. And academics, as we know, are out of touch and, worst of all, naïve. So much might be inferred from his reported reaction to the media coverage of his speech last week: he is said to be shocked at the backlash. Frustrated, dismayed, perhaps, but surely not shocked that makes him sound wounded and repentant. But ...

Rowan Williams and straw men: virgin on the ridiculous

Gravatar {Rowan Williams as Lord Summerisle in the Wicker Man} Earlier today I did a blog post about Rowan Williams revolving around the metaphor of him erecting giant straw men in order to burn them down, but it was crap so I deleted it. But I was quite pleased with the above photoshop jobbie, so I thought I’d publish it anyway rather than have it all go to waste. Share This

How did you get here Nigella Lawson - I HATE THAT WOMAN !

Gravatar In my ongoing series looking at how people have ended up at this blog via odd search engine queries, I give you the search term "Which food processor does Nigella Lawson use " This nicely linked to a story about my pet hate, which is Nigella Lawson, who can only be out done in the irritating stakes by Jamie Oliver whose phrases like "Wrap up that lovely little tiger" when referring to covering venison in tin foil, made me cringe the other day. I used to be against new runways, but when I heard Jamie Oliver was against the Stansted ...

More pressure for the Tories on funding

Gravatar The Tories are under pressure regarding funding on at least three fronts in the papers today: David Davis is facing an Electoral Commission enquiry over a £20,000 donation to his campaign team. And the long-running saga of Lord Ashcroft's tax affairs has

Gravatar LabourHome reckon that Frank Field and Kate Hooey face expulsion from the parliamentary Labour party after they failed to resign from the "I want a referendum" campaign, as two other Labour MPs have done, in response to a request from their Chief Whip. The campaign in question targets pro-European MPs with small majorities. As LabourHome comments, "Galloway was expelled for less..."

Vince takes on Branson in the Mail on Sunday

Gravatar Vince Cable hit the front page of the Mail on Sunday this morning - without a dancefloor in sight. He has written a stinging critque of Branson, and the Brown-backed bid for Northern Rock. So hard are his punches that Branson was compelled to defend himself - and that is the part that makes the frontpage. Hopefully thousands of Mail readers will have turned to page 25 for the Vince Cable article. They will find a cogent explanation of how much is involved and what is wrong with Brown's approach: To put these mind-numbing figures in context, the sums are ...

Demolition will take place in the next few weeks so the fantastic view will be gone soon. The upper storeys have been closed to the public for a number of years. I made it to the top. Here's the

Archbishop furore: Time for us to grow up

Gravatar The Observer today provides some mature reflection on What-a-Burkhagate. On Page One they report that the Court of Appeal is about to rule on a case involving an arranged marriage conducted in the UK under sharia law. This is a "live" example of how British law already relates, one way or another, with sharia law, indicating that the Archbishop's lecture was not exactly irrelevant. There's a

Nick on prozac!

Gravatar As mentioned in one of my earlier postings there are certain mental health problems which are not recognised by medical professionals in this country such as borderline personality disorders. Quite how someone can be ill and not be recognised as such is quite puzzling. The mental health system in this country is shambolic. Therefore Nick's stance on using medication purely as a way of treating these problems is fantastic. Waiting times for patients with these issues can be just as urgent as for patients waiting for a transplant. There is a risk to themselves and a risk to society. So ...

Gravatar If you want SITA to collect your plastic bottles from your home along with the green box, make sure you make this clear in your response to South Glos. Reflections from the country seat

Gravatar No Westminster duties this week as Parliament is in recess. We get a lot of stick about too many holidays, but as we arent actually salaried in the Lords, I think the Peers are in the clear on this one. Its a chance to catch up with things. As I posted last week, theres a rash of London bye-elections at the moment (another has just cropped up Queens Park Ward in Brent) to try to get along to. Ming's treatment bemoaned by John Mortimer

Gravatar Rumpole creator John Mortimer says the contrast between the popularity of John McCain in the States and the treatment of Ming Campbell is emblematic of Britain's old being 'ignored': One of the few figures who acted like a statesman was Sir Ming Campbell. A life at the Scottish Bar had trained him in the art of asking apparently simple questions which could pierce and deflate pomposity. But

Are you looking for a decent website that covers all the US Primary opinion polls

Gravatar I have been searching around in vain looking for a decent website that not only prints news about the US Primaries, but also features all the opinion polls from the various states. I have found the US TV Channels websites to be largely useless, which networks like Fox can hardly be described as a news Channel, so I reallly cannot trust a word they say. What is actually "fun" about your Facebook "Fun Wall" or Facebook for that matter

Gravatar I have been registered with Facebook longer than anyone I know, and to begin with it seemed like harmless unobtrusive fun, but as soon as everyone I knew got registered on it I have found it to be an utter pain in the arse. Everyday I receive pointless and never ending e-mail stelling me someone has done something on my "fun wall", only to find that my fun wall is about as much fun as cholera. Every other day I receive a request to join some group to save someone from deportation or to get someone recognised for something they ...

Steve Winwood: Dear Mr Fantasy

Gravatar The other day I wrote that I am coming round to the idea that Steve Winwood is the greatest genius British pop has produced. A strong claim, but is there anyone left from the British Invasion generation of the 1960s - albeit that Winwood was its youngest member - who can still produce music like this There is even an element of self-parody about the Rolling Stones these days. Windless night helped

Gravatar The fact that there was next to no wind yesterday made all the difference. It was an oddly gorgeous day and felt more like early summer than late winter. The fire was so big, like a huge pyre had been lit in the centre of Camden market. Even a slight breeze would have meant that the hot debris being thrown up in the air when the fire was at its height would have rained down on more homes and shops in the area.   Thank you to the men and women who risked their lives to stop this fire. We owe you a lot.

Fluoride

Gravatar Peter Black has long been known as a campaigner against fluoridation of our water supply. (See his entry "The fluoride state" for February 9th on his blog) He is not alone. One of our own members wrote recently: Once again, I have read that there is a call from some politicians, and so-called professors to introduce fluoride to the water supply, but only in deprived areas. This is a quote taken from this BBC link Of course this isn't for everyone - it won't be necessary in the wealthier home counties for instance. I am extremely concerned about this proposal, ...

Nick Cohen: being a member of the BNP is like being a member of the Liberal Democrats

Gravatar Oh, all right. Yes, there was a context: Many in Upper Beeding agree that being a member of the BNP is like being a member of the Liberal Democrats, a choice that has no effect on personal standing or moral worth. The perils of office

Gravatar Are we starting to see the beginning of an erosion in support for Plaid Cymru amongst Welsh speakers as a result of them being in government. My reason for asking is this piece in the Wales on Sunday, which tells us that furious Welsh language campaigners have accused the Assembly Government of breaking its promises after it announced a cash deal for a new Welsh newspaper well below what they wanted. We are told that Cymdeithas yr Iaith Gymraeg have written to Plaid Cymru heritage Minister, Rhodri Glyn Thomas, accusing him of breaking the promise to pay for a Welsh-language ...

Our multi-ethnic state

Gravatar I am not entirely clear what Monmouth Conservative MP, David Davies is trying to achieve in this morning's Wales on Sunday, other than perhaps to maintain his high public profile. He has commented on figures that reveal that Welsh police forces have spent more than £2m on language translators since the start of the Millennium. Even the use of the word Millennium implies some apocalyptic event when it is nothing of the sort. The paper reveals that the police have been forced to spend increasing amounts of taxpayers money on interpreters for obscure languages such as Sylheti, Tongan and Berber. ...

Bugging and the rule of law: a first class scandal in the making

Obama gets convincing win in all 3 states, now ties with Hillary in delegates!

Gravatar All political punditry is as useless and as futile as laymen trying to predict the weather or economy. No one man can get inside the heads of all voters and it usually ends up being a similar role to the men who discuss the football on Match of the Day at half time. It's entertainment, which makes me wonder why some journalists are paid so much for what is essentially a half time discussion in between policy announcements and actual elections. Commentary is not journalism, its gambling advice rather than anything else. However indulging in it is often fun and ...

Respecting the old and the fall of Ming Campbell

Gravatar Sir John Mortimer, no spring chicken himself, has an article in today's Observer. He writes that a new activity has been added to those forbidden by our government, like hunting, smoking, driving large cars and failing to eat green vegetables. It is growing old. He goes on:This is not altogether true of America where Republicans are (somewhat) enthusiastically embracing John McCain in his hope to become President and where a 66-year-old Julie Christie has received a nomination for an Oscar. Camden Market Fire - Eyewitness account

Gravatar I could see the glow in the distance from Swiss Cottage. The flames shot up into the air and as I ran down Chalk Farm Road, the road was being showered in sparks and ash. I stood on Hawley Street with other witnesses, held back by Police, my mouth gawping open. The Camden market fire raged on my doorstep, and the firefighters had tea breaks below by balcony. No one was hurt. But people's homes have been burned and livelihoods shattered. And a piece of history has been lost forever.    One man said he thought the Police were worried that the sparks would set off ...
