If there were a poll for the unluckiest MP ever, the winner would probably be Alfred Dobbs. He gained Smethwick for Labour in the party's landslide on 26 July 1945. The following day he was killed in a road accident when, attempting to avoid a child, his car was in collision with a military vehicle in Doncaster. You might think he holds the record for the shortest service as an MP. But according to Wikipedia the Irish Nationalist Thomas Higgins, who won North Galway in 1906, contrived to die between the close of the poll and the declaration of the ...

No reader will be surprised that Broomsdene tip is to be axed by Durham's cabinet despite being "heavily supported" by local people, including the only petition of over 5,000 signatures for any site across the county. The cabinet report which condemns it to closure is unconvincing to say the least, especially if you compare the commentary on Hett Hills which is "saved" and Broomsdene which is to be axed. In the review of Hett Hills specific commentary is provided about the public meeting at which there was strong opposition to closure, severe worries about fly-tipping and concerns about the increasing ...

You know how Conservatives are meant to be against red tape and petty regulations? That doesn't seems to apply here in Harborough. From the Harborough Mail: New control orders set to be introduced by Harborough District Council will make it illegal for owners to have their dogs off the lead in certain areas. The regulations include footpaths and cycleways - such as the Millenium (sic) Mile through Harborough - as well as grass verges, public sports pitches and car parks, cemeteries, churchyards and children's play areas. When I was a councillor back in the 1980s we brought in special dog walks ...

If you remember the early days of 'That's Life' with Esther Rantzen then you may just remember a singer called Jake Thackray who supplied the musical interlude. He played guitar in a similar style to me (or should that be the other way round) and one of his great influences was a French singer, Georges Brassens. I have also been inspired by Georges and although I am not keen on singing in English, I do manage to sing in French and in a broad Yorkshire accent à la Jake. The article is behind the paper's paywall, so thanks to Liberal Democrat Voice for giving us a substantial quote from Paddy Ashdown's article in The Times this morning: "The danger is not diminished because there will be no centralised state database of the sort that Labour proposed. That is largely an irrelevance. This Election Broadcast by Brian Paddick and the London Liberal Democrats has just been shown on the BBC. Even from 400 miles away, it's blatantly obvious to me that Paddick is the most professional and capable candidate for mayor. What impresses me most is that he is innately liberal in his approach, hence the mention of abuse of stop and search powers. He knows how to keep people safe without trampling all over your civil liberties. Enjoy! * Caron Lindsay is Wednesday editor at Lib Dem Voice and blogs at Caron's Musings

To the surprise of absolutely no-one, Cornwall Council has formally objected to the application by local residents in the Woburn area of Launceston to register the open space off Woburn Road as 'village green'. Granting village green status would protect the land from future development. Cornwall Council is claiming that the land is merely a 'narrow strip of grassland' and not suitable for dog walking (which, according to the Council, should only take place on pavements). They also claim that the area is not suitable for children playing games. What the council fails to mention is that it is keen ...

Traditional orchards are a much loved part of our British heritage and countryside providing fruit and peaceful places to enjoy, as well as food and shelter for hundreds of rare plants and animals. Since 1950 Natural England estimates that overall orchard area in England has declined by 63%, and it's probably higher in our area because of all the building developments. The People's Trust for Endangered Species (PTES) recently carried out an England orchard inventory, listing 321 potential traditional orchards in South Gloucestershire covering an area of 127.9 hectares. So far, owner questionnaires have revealed that 8% of traditional orchards ...

I often say when I don't like something like a Lib Dem election broadcast. I don't praise such things on auto-pilot. So, what do I think of Brian Paddick's London Mayoral Election Broadcast? I think it's good. It focuses very simply on Brian's main strength, which is his long experience as a senior London police officer. London's Mayor now has the same powers over policing that elected 'commissioners' will soon have in other parts of England. Brian's experience qualifies him to exercise those powers more effectively than would any other candidate. The broadcast is at (if watching on a ...

I haven't blogged on psychology so far – it's not a subject I know much about, academically at least. But this blog by Sophia Dembling in Psychology Today (thanks to Nic Prigg @nicola_prigg on Twitter) has really set me thinking. Ms Dembling highlights a recent suggestion by a young research, Jennifer Grimes on introversion. Instead of thinking about it as part of a spectrum with introversion at one end and extroversion at the other, might these not be entirely separate characteristics? Instead try thinking about introversion on an autistic spectrum – with autism at one end, introversion at the other, ...
