Because I had something else on – helping to select the artist for the Consett roundabouts initiative – I only had time for the briefest of looks today, and will certainly be returning for another visit. For two years we've been waiting for David Cameron's first full reshuffle. There have been various mini-shuffles caused by resignations but nothing major yet. There's been spatterings of meaningless rumour of reshuffles for quite some time so who knows whether the current talk is correct or not, but there are some questions to be asked. I think that one of the problems faced by the Cameron administration is that it has a very narrow base of support due to the small political spectrum of its ministers. Most, whether Conservative or Liberal Democrat, MP or Peer, are of the broadly centrist ...

Earlier this evening Barack Obama said: "At a certain point I just concluded, for me personally, it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same-sex couples should be able to get married "I had hesitated on gay marriage, in part because I thought civil unions would be sufficient ... something that would give people hospital visitation rights and other elements we take for granted. And I was sensitive to the fact that for a lot of people the word marriage was something that evokes powerful traditions, religious beliefs, and so forth. "I have to tell ...

Once again, the siren voices call out for reform of employment law. And without too much surprise, plans to reform the employment tribunal system has been included in today's Queen's Speech. We've just been re-watching the West Wing episode "Stirred", in which the White House team discuss replacing the Vice-President in Bartlet's bid for re-election, and it occurred to me that Joe Biden turns 70 in November; only five of his predecessors held that office at a greater age (Elbridge Gerry, John Nance Garner, George Clinton, Charles Curtis and Alben Barkley, two of who died in office). If he is re-elected and serves until January 2017, he will be older than all of them but Barkley. He may decide not to bother. If so, this will probably be depicted as a ...

I was exploring the west side of Leicester's London Road yesterday, but most of the large Victorian and Edwardian houses have long since vanished. One of these was The Elms - home of J.W. Following the confirmation in today's Queen's Speech that something that might look like the Communications Capability Development Programme is going ahead, a conference call had been (pre-)arranged with the cast of the earlier, somewhat more confrontational call. I read the Daily Mail every day. It's worth it because in amongst the inaccurate, scaremongering bile, there's quite often a wee gem which shows off the Liberal Democrat influence in the Coalition. Today, it carries an interview with David Cameron in which he tells how these pesky Liberal Democrats have stopped him doing things like getting rid of human rights legislation, eroding people's employment rights and stopping him introducing a tax break for married couples. While some Liberal Democrats may worry about some elements of the Coalition's plans to increase the qualifying period for employment tribunals 2 years, it ...

[IMG: The Parkland Walk] Over the last few weeks a number of people have contacted me concerned that someone is living on the Parkland Walk in Stroud Green. Local residents were concerned the person has mental health problems and is damaging the nature area by pulling up bushes and plants. Obviously, its completely unacceptable for someone to being living on the Walk – particularly if their behaviour is distressing residents and park users and causing damaging. Even more worrying is that someone in a vulnerable state could be living in this way on our doorstep. Since being alerted to this ...

Writing in today's Financial Times, David Laws sets out his key priorities for the Coalition, discussing what needs to happen in the economy to ensure growth is achieved alongside deficit reduction. He writes about how crucial it is for the Government to get it right on the economy. The coalition still has the potential to be one of the great reforming governments of the postwar era. The changes we are making in education, welfare and pensions are radical and right. The country will judge us over our full term and not on the basis of a turbulent few weeks of ...

....do not do so for a measure which is of equal irrelevance to the electorate, yet looks even more self-serving. I am talking about the speculation that the Government is preparing a 'Plan B', in the plausible eventuality of Lords reform stalling. It is right at this time that growing the economy is the absolute priority of Government, though wrong to listen to misleading siren voices arguing for the scrapping of all employment protection in the process. The danger is that an endless squabble about Lords reform will leak Parliamentary time which Lib Dems should put to better use. If ...

From all the debate and angst within the Tory party over the issue of House of Lords reform you'd imagine the plan to inject an element of democracy into the UK parliament had been foisted on David Cameron by sneakily obsessive Liberal Democrats. Yet the reality is somewhat different. The Coalition Government's pledge to overhaul the revising chamber (after Labour's successive, botched failures) built on Tory promises to the electorate over a decade or more — recognising perhaps that such reform is in fact in their own interests. Here's what the Tory manifesto said as far back as 2001: In ...

What a strange title for a blog post you are thinking (yes, I am arrogant enough to assume I know your thoughts by the way). Surely it was a triumphant day for the Labour opposition in the local elections last Thursday and the Conservative and Lib Dem parties are licking their wounds? Well that depends how you look at it. Yes, the Conservative party's share of the vote was only 31%. And the Lib Dems did as poorly as last year during the local elections and only ended up with 16% of the vote. Labour got 38% and are very ...

Yesterday I did a double appearance on the BBC News Channel which, I hope, to the outside world appeared normal, calm and on time. Behind the scenes, however, things didn't quite go to plan... It started off with one minicab arriving to pick me up in the wrong borough. The second turned up in the right borough and was promisingly driving towards me as I stood on the pavement waiting its arrival. Alas, it then carried on straight past me and round the corner, resulting in a brief West End farce moment as I headed off after it round the ...

It was worrying to read Jonathan Calder's "unsolicited advice" to Nick Clegg a while back. Apparently on a conference call regarding the CCDP Snoopers' Charter there was a political advisor, of whom Jonathan says, "How shall I phrase this? – I am not wholly convinced that this person can be relied upon to offer Nick the best political advice on a consistent basis." Well, I don't know who this advisor is or what advice they were giving. While fighting an election, I didn't want to say anything (not that many people read my blog; it's just good discipline). But if ...

Following the Local Election result on Thursday, Stockport's Liberal Democrats successfully defended 9 seats, lost 2 seats and gained 1 seat from the Conservatives. This means they have 28 seats and, although they remain the largest single political Group, the Council remains in No Overall Control. One of the seats lost was that of Cllr Dave Goddard, Leader of the Council. Cllr Goddard will remain Leader of the Council until the Annual Meeting on 22nd May. On Friday the Liberal Democrat Group met to elect officers for the year ahead and to agree how to approach negotiations with other parties. ...

Yesterday, I took the opportunity to take a look at the completed road surfaces in Abbotsford Street (east end), Pentland Crescent, Loganlee Terrace and Colinton Place that were recently subject to improvements. They look a lot better but I have fed back to the City Engineer and Tayside Contracts that the contractor must return to undertake some 'snagging' works - for example, where a parked vehicle meant a patch of road was missed. Lola Versus Powerman And The Moneygoround, Part One is a difficult album to assess from this distance. Artistically, it's a clear step down from Arthur, but at the same time it sparked a short-lived commercial resurgence for the band, at least in the singles chart, providing the Kinks with their last two UK top ten ...

Tonight's meeting about why Ealing Council and its contractor, Enterprise, had a full public gallery (not the norm). I handed in a large petition from residents all across Ealing who were totally annoyed that the service the Council provides, was not for many weeks in April. I reported that one road had not had its waste collected for three weeks. It was only collected when I contacted the Council's CEO - he then arranged for the waste to be collected the next day, a Sunday! It should not have taken the CEO to be involved. My party demanded that both ...

Tuesday: Whenever I hear "exploding underpants"* it's hard not to think of Bojo the Clown, whose re-election as Lord Mayor of London Town has inspired some of the more FRUITY Conservatories to come out fighting for more "traditional" Conservatory policies. Which is ODD 'cos Bojo's nine-point-plan puts LOTS of emphasis on investment for jobs and growth (points 3, 4, 5, 6 and 8. And probably 7 too. And maybe 9.) and distinctly NONE on cutting immigration "to help the working class (i.e. BNP-voting) poor", 'cos Bojo may be BONKERS but he's not STUPID. He just tries hard to LOOK stupid! ...
