In all the discussion over the future (or lack thererof) of Nick Clegg in this week's Lib Dem Voice poll, one bit of opinion research has been somewhat glossed over. Earlier this week ComRes published the results of a poll which asked: 'Do you agree or disagree that being in coalition with the Conservatives has shown the Liberal Democrats to be a credible party of government?' This is in essence the strategy oft annunciated by Clegg and devised by his former adviser Richard Reeves. Their argument is that years of opposition has meant that the voting public simply see the ...
The Sun has just announced that it is going to publish photos of Prince Harry naked because people in Britain deserve to see what others in the rest of the world have already viewed. How gallant of The Sun. While other journalists travel the world to report on war, famine and corruption to inform us of what we would not otherwise hear, The Sun has picked what it only knows best to do - publish pictures of naked bodies. Is there any use for this newspaper other than to line the cat's litter tray with?
OK, it looks like I have been a wee bit inactive for the last few months. That would be true! Having spent a great couple of months in the States I came back and threw myself into the thankless task of job hunting. But that doesn't mean I haven't been completely silent elsewhere. Today I followed up my February CiF piece with one raising the question about whether Nick Clegg should stand down as leader........if the LDV poll is to be believed that should annoy and please members in equal measure! To be honest, when I got the call from ...
Today : * I took part in a school/pupil/traffic safety site visit to St Andrew's Primary School (pictured right) as part of the on-going work of the working party on safety outside city schools. * I held my Thursday weekly surgery at Blackness Primary School. * I attended the latest - and a very positive - meeting of the West End Local Community Planning Partnership, that took place at the Tartan Coffee House on Perth Road. Subjects covered included:An update on the proposed consultation on residents' parking that will be launched on mid-October.Details of the Dundee West District Plan by ...
We've been away, as the deafening silence on the blog in early August might indicate. But we've been busy enjoying ourselves, far from the madding crowd... And this is a picture of Tanu, the sea otter, at the Vancouver Aquarium. Tanu was part of Ros's birthday present this year, as I had arranged for a 'sea otter experience' for the pair of us, given Ros's love of sea otters. The experience starts with a behind the scenes talk about sea otters, where they live, what they eat, what issues they encounter, and you get to find out some interesting things, ...
The Liberal Democrats have selected Jill Hope as parliamentary candidate for the Corby and East Northamptonshire by-election. Jill has lived in Northamptonshire for more than 35 years. She currently works as a business manager, helping medium-sized businesses and was previously a local business start-up advisor. She was part of the team that was instrumental in the relocation of Barclaycard from London to Northamptonshire which generated local jobs and has worked with young people, helping them find work placements and as an adviser to the University of Northampton. Commenting, Jill Hope said: "I'm delighted to have been chosen to stand for ...
A couple of weeks ago I mentioned the essay I contributed to Graham Watson's collection Liberalism - Something to Shout About in 2006 and threatened to post it here. Well here is the first part. Last time I discussed the book with Graham there were still copies available and you could obtain one by send a cheque for £6 - payable to Graham Watson MEP - to Bagehot Publishing, The Liberty, Old Kelways, Langport, Somerset TA10 9SJ. You can find the full contents in an earlier post on this blog. Anyway here is part 1 - I have changed the ...
I have sent Ken Bates a pen in the hope it will encourage him to sign the agreement for new cash investment into Leeds United FC.
The summer of 2012 has not been the 'usual' silly season of alien sightings, crop circles and various other nonsense is dug up year after year. Instead, the coalition has had a gurgling stomachache. It might just be a bit of gas, or it may be indicative of acute appendicitis. The problem is, the barely ...
Mark Gettleson, on Conservative Home, argues that a Liberal Democrat meltdown would kill the Tories' chances at the next election: "The Coalition has united the centre-Left and split the centre-Right for the first time in a century." A new report from Big Brother Watch looks at how the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act has been used by both local and public authorities in recent years: "A decade on and more than three million authorisations later, our research found how there is still a great deal of uncertainty about how and why the powers are being used - and a clear ...
Today Fred and I paid a visit to the Town lane Woods, which are managed for us by the Forestry Commission. Adjacent to the woods there is a patch of green space that I have reffered to in the past as "The Park With No Name". This piece of land runs from Town Lane to Bentham Way neat to the Post Office Depot. For several months I have been trying to find out who owns and maintains this land. Up until a few years ago the grass was cut regularly and the fences etc maintained. All that stopped, for no ...
Feminism is described on dictionary.com as thus, 'the doctrine advocating social, political, and all other rights of women equal to those of men.' On the bastion that is modern day sourcing it is described as, 'Feminism is a collection of movements and ideologies aimed at defining, establishing, and defending equal political, economic, and social rights for women. In addition, feminism seeks to establish equal opportunities for women in education and employment. A feminist is "an advocate or supporter of the rights and equality of women."' So I think it is fair to say that feminism is mainly about equality and ...
Classic children's books, which I had first read many years ago long before I got to know and love Berlin, the city in which it is set. It's a very basic but charming story of the young and smart and good getting together to defeat the old and evil, and has not lost its charm - so popular that it was the only book by Kästner to escape the book-burning of May 1933. I had forgotten the scene-setting dramatis personæ at the beginning, and also Kästner's insertion of himself into the story at the end. Great fun. I'm sorry to ...
Credit Katy Gordon I have attended hundreds of extremely useful Liberal Democrat training sessions over the years. Virtually all of them have been very good, but the ones which have been most helpful have been those run by Women Liberal Democrats. I've been to several "inspiration days" now and always learn something new or meet fabulous new people who become great colleagues. My most recent session took place in Glasgow last Saturday. The idea of these sessions is to give women members an idea of the wide range of options open to them within the party, to lay out all ...
Sometimes the United Kingdom feels, to me, like a very conservative place. I often imagine it is inhabited by a bunch of Ann Widdecombes. And so I have often made the same mistake anti-marriage equality campaigners have, in my opinion, made; to imagine marriage equality would be an incredibly uphill struggle and maybe impossible for some time to come. But it is becoming increasingly unclear that, to my great relief, I and their are quite, quite wrong. Thankfully my pessimism lead simply to me fighting harder, unfortunately for them the anti-marriage equality campaigners have allowed their optimism to make them ...
Interesting to read the comments of Gordon Williams, the Shepway Conservative Party agent, on Ann Barnes, who is an independent candidate for November's Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) elections. In an article in the Folkestone Herald (23rd August), he says Ann Barnes is "uncomfortably close to the Liberal Democrats" - presumably as some Lib Dem party members (who run an award winning campaign consultancy) are helping her campaign. Leaving aside why being close to the Liberal Democrats should be uncomfortable, to the best of my knowledge Ann Barnes has never been, is not, and has no plans to become a ...
Congratulations to Boutinot Wines, a major international wine business based in Brook House, Northenden Road, Gatley – featured as a success story on today's 'You and Yours' programme on BBC Radio 4. Boutinot produce and import good quality French wine and re-package it for restaurants and consumers – famous wine critic Oz Clarke has even commended them and the owner has been named 'sommelier of the year' for the fourth year running.
Springfield Road is being resurfaced as part of the million pounds Stockport Lib Dems are spending to resurface some of the worst residential roads across the borough. We're also looking at ways we might be able to find the money to resurface and repair more roads across the area.
One of the joys of our local cinema being in Bradford is that as well as the usual English Language flicks, one also has a wide variety of Bollywood to choose from. So today, we went to see Ek Tha Tiger. It's a spy action thriller romcom musical (Bollywood doesn't really do single genre films) set in India, Iraq, Turkey, Cuba and Dublin. And it was bloody fantastic. The plot was convoluted but fun, the cinematography was stunning, the fight choreography was amazingly creative, and the sets and costumes were beautiful. If you go and see it (and I recommend ...
Do you remember at school, when the teachers mentioned that something would be on your "permanent record"? The big secret is that there isn't one. Apologies to all teachers, but it's not likely this blog's demographic will reach your students. However, since the advent of the internet, a permanent record does exist. Everywhere from the Wayback Machine to Google's cache contains copies of all public activity you post online. At Collabora, we hire some of the best open source software engineers to work for our clients. It should be no surprise that a quick Ohloh and search for someone's name ...
On Sunday Cllr Mary Di Mauro and I represented the Manchester Liberal Democrats at the Peterloo Memorial rally. There was a very good turnout at the Rally to remember those that were killed and injured during the Peterloo Massacre. During the brief but moving service the names of those that were killed were read out and a flower was laid in their name at the foot of a temporary memorial. The Manchester Liberal Democrats are supporting the Peterloo Memorial Campaign for a prominent, explanatory and respectful monument to this hugely significant event in the fight for democracy. At the last ...
Strangely, that Liberal Democrat Voice poll which showed that members were split 47%-46% on whether Nick Clegg should still be Liberal Democrat leader at the next election has attracted a bit of coverage in the press. The Guardian suggests that: Clegg is vulnerable because he is seen as one of the few people at the top of the party who is ideologically sympathetic to the Conservatives. Well, that's maybe because Polly Toynbee and the Guardian are always trying to paint him that way. David Cameron, on the other hand, who is probably in a better position to judge, is always ...

Rape has been in the news a lot this week because of the disgraceful comments of Todd Akins and George Galloway. These men have at least started a dialogue on the issue which has had some positive effects - read this excellent post by George Potter to see how the furore has made him stand up and be counted as a feminist. Rape in itself is a horrible, traumatic crime which leaves those who suffer it with a life sentence in which they have to learn to deal with the effects of this violation. Some men, though, choose to torture ...
Continuing the reposted Odanglesex adventures - this time on Branding the Directorate. Those outside the jargon of large commercial organisations - and large state organisations aping them - might think branding was what happened to steers, but do not fear. Health and Safety rules would prevent this being done to Kenneth Spotlessnob's Directorate and it is even possible the unions might learn of it and object. From: Kenneth Spotlessnob, Director of Transformational Excellence and Strategic Vision To: All Transformational Excellence and Strategic Vision I was delighted that so many colleagues from Transformational Excellence and Strategic Vision took part in the ...
Well done to pupils and the staff in some very good results: "Students at Prestwich Arts College have smashed all records to deliver the school's best ever GCSE results. The percentage of students achieving 5, or more, GCSE's at the top grades has improved by a huge 15% to 82.2% and the improvement in the percentage of students achieving 5, or more, GCSE's including both English and Maths is even better - up by 17% to 55.2%. Both boys and girls have substantially improved their performance and the so called 'gender gap' is at its narrowest for some time - ...
An extract from a forthcoming book appeared in the Evening Standard last week. The book the Standard quotes from is Britannia Unchained, a collection of essays by senior backbench Tories. Dominic Raab, Priti Patel and Chris Skidmore might not be household names yet, but they are young, right-wing and tremendously ambitious for themselves and the Conservative Party. According to the Standard article, the authors believe Britons today need more "graft, risk and effort" in order to make Britain part of the "superleague" of nations. "Once they enter the workplace", the young Tories argue, "the British are among the worst idlers ...
As far as I am aware there is only one meeting scheduled for Blyth Town Council next week. The Events Committee will meet at Ebor House on Tuesday (28th ) at 6:30 pm. As ever, if I hear that more meetings are arranged I'll post.

After reports from local residents of more dead fish floating on the surface of the waters of Cuckoos Hollow, local LIB DEM ward councillor Darren Fower has now payed a visit to the location and reported it the problem to the City Council and Environment Agency. Commenting, Darren explained: "I've received reports that fish have started to appear floating dead on the surface of the water, with most reports coming from around the bridge area. I suspect that the recent warm weather has played a part in their demise, but have taken the action of reporting the matter to the ...
I had to stifle a giggle as Paddy Ashdown strode on to the stage at the Edinburgh Book Festival and said:What are you lot doing here at ten in the morning? There was a certain irony at this coming from the man who notoriously held meetings at the crack of dawn when he was party leader. The morning after his "why the world will never be the same again" talk, he was back to tell us about his new book, "A brilliant little operation", about the founding raid of the Special Boat Service, the special forces unit where he would later ...

August bank holiday is approaching fast and has traditionally been a favourite time for Rave's. The South Cambs region has had three raves in 4 months. Due to our rural landscape / location South Cambs is ideal for another visit. Police will be patrolling our country side in a proactive approach in preventing such illegal events setting up over the holiday period and ask the community for their assistance too. A Grain of truth in fears? I've written a lot about Boris Island and the Grain hub over the last year or so. It is rarely out of the local news or Political scope for more than a week. Some one always has an opinion or Boris Johnson makes a remark or... Its tiring really. One of the main themes of the writings though is Labour's interpretations of the events - as they are the most vocal group upon the subject. What usually happens is there is an event or someone (usually a Conservative but more recently Dr Huppert Libdem ...
You may not have read Are Women Human? " Don't worry – neither have I. But the book sits on my shelf staring maliciously at me. The précis is simple: "Human Rights" prevent slavery, promote equal treatment, etc.Women are sold into slavery, are discriminated against, etc. Therefore, women aren't human.I'm a reformed 21st century kind of guy. I believe in treating women as if they were equal to me. I'm a non-violent, non-sexist, non-homophobic, vegetarian tree-hugger, who believes in peace and love. Our rail fares are among the most expensive in Europe, and they keep going up. Between 1997 and 2010 rail fares went up by an astonishing 66% – well above inflation. If next year's planned rail fare rises go ahead, some passengers will hand over up to 15% of their wages for the pleasure of travelling to work. Since the Labour party introduced above inflation fare rises in 2003, these increases have become a yearly occurrence. Indeed, Labour Party policy is still to have above-inflation rail fare increases every year. We say that rail fares are already too high. We ...
If you do then I'm chairing and speaking at a session on this very question at next week's CASE Europe annual conference in Birmingham: How 'New' is the New Philanthropy? The panel will question the current consensus that there is something distinctively 'new' about philanthropy at the start of the 21st century. They will challenge modern perceptions of 'new donors', 'new sources' and 'new ways of giving'. Panellists will assess why the concept of 'new philanthropy' has gained widespread currency. Harriet Harman has been filling column inches recently with a mea culpa regarding the 2005 Gambling Act, claiming that Labour made a mistake introducing this bill and that they should reverse the measures that have led to a growth in problem gambling, particularly in poorer areas. Good for her! She's decided that something her government did was wrong and that action is needed to address the problems caused. She says: If we had known then what we know now, we wouldn't have allowed this, because it's not just ruining the high street, it's ruining people's lives.I got the most heartrending ...

What's new in the housing world this week? What have we learnt? The primary lesson so far would seem to be that rich people really don't like living next to poor people. They'd rather the poor, and even the middling sorts, made themselves scarce and freed up the space for a few more members of the moneyed classes to move the average income of the neighbourhood up a notch or two. Hold the front page. Of course, the message wasn't quite as crudely expressed as that. Perish the thought. On the contrary, what we need is a publication to make ...
[IMG: Ronald Reagan] Welcome to today's tax irony corner: that tycoon tax pushed by Nick Clegg is a British equivalent of the US Alternative Minimum Tax which in turn was a successor to that country's Minimum Tax. As my headline rather gives away... it was two of the more right-wing Republican Presidents who oversaw the introduction of the American equivalent to Clegg's Tycoon Tax. Somehow I can't see Nick Clegg boasting at the Liberal Democrat conference next month, "Conference, after decades out of power we're now in power and implementing Nixonian policies!". However, perhaps the fact that even Ronald Reagan* ...

Until the Summer, Christine Jardine was deep at the heart of Government as a special adviser on Scottish media based in Downing Street. She's now returned to Scotland and full time Liberal Democrat politics. This week, in the Scotsman, she argued that over reliance on land based wind farms can hurt the communities where they are based and predominantly benefits the landowners who pocket the subsidy and don't pass it on to local people. She argued that more attention should be given to offshore and tidal projects, like the one Scottish Secretary Mike Moore was so enthusiastic about a few ...
Today's Telegraph is speculating that the Prime Minister is likely to move Transport Secretary, Justine Greening to another Cabinet position so as to pave the way for a third runway to be built at Heathrow. They say that Miss Greening, who is a West London MP, has led the campaign against the expansion of Heathrow and is not likely even to consider allowing a third runway while responsible for the policy. In addition the Conservative manifesto ruled out expanding the airport, whilst the Liberal Democrats are also opposed. Despite that the third runway is the main demand of business leaders ...

The 137 was a popular bus providing the only link from the Bury Old Road 'side' of Prestwich north towards Sunnybank and Pilsworth, and south towards Broughton. Wednesday: Short version: Makes you Proud to be British, as Mr Winston Churchill once said. Slightly longer version: Why is it supposed to be a scandal that a fit, healthy young man wants to get naked with ladies? Or even gentlemen? Thinking about it, delete the qualifiers "fit" "healthy" "young" and "man". Consenting adults should be allowed to get naked - and yes even "sexy" - without it being a scandal!
