Our text today is taken from Keynesian Liberal: "I was brought up under the influence of the Church of England and the Book of Common Prayer, so each Sunday morning and evening, as a choirboy, I was exhorted to confess my "manifold sins and wickedness" and not to "dissemble nor cloke them." It's a pity this has gone out of fashion, because there seems to be a good deal of dissembling and cloking going on in modern society, among all sorts and conditions of men and women, and not just in the Liberal Democrats." Lib Dems should vote against the ...
I was recently sent a review copy of "The Wartime Farm", a book to accompany the BBC series of the same name, by the publishers Octopus Books. Last year, wearing both my historian's and horticulturalist's hats, I spent 2 weeks living on a wartime diet. I made a series of videos about it and the local media took quite a bit of interest in what I did. It seems Octopus Publishing noticed it as well.
As I am (for various happy reasons) not in Brighton for Lib Dem Conference, I was just with some friends in a J D Wetherspoon pub in New Barnet. Upon said friends' departure, I put 50p in a quiz machine in the pub, and, it must be said, won a pound back. On this quiz machine (which bore the logo Gamesnet, whoever they may be), I played a 'pub quiz' game in which two of the suggested answers to each question were possibly right, and one was deliberately silly. One question was: "Steven Spielberg did NOT direct the following film: ...
TheJerseyWay posts two BBC Radio Jersey interviews that are worthy of attention. The American investigative journalist Leah McGrath Goodman talks about her continuing struggle with British and Jersey authorities to be allowed to work on the island again: And then Jersey assistant chief minister Senator Sir Philip Bailhache reveals that he is attending the Liberal Democrat Conference in Brighton. As well as engaging in "casual discussions" he wants to meet Tom McNally, the minister responsible for the Crown dependencies, and John Hemming, the Liberal Democrat MP who recently raised his concerns about the governance of Jersey in the House of ...
I put in a speaker's card to speak at the Debate on Equal Citizenship- supporting independence for sick and disabled people. I was not chosen to speak so here is what I would have said. I am very disappointed that I didn't get to speak because I felt that somebody should have stood up for Remploy at a Lib Dem conference. Good afternoon conference. I joined the Liberal Democrats and gave my first conference speech at the age of 10. I am now 13. Being in government seemed a distant dream then but I firmly believed that if ever we ...
From the Leicester Mercury last week: New face-recognising equipment at the Post Office will be used to record the identity of foreign nationals in the city. The Post Office downstairs in WHSmith, in Gallowtree Gate, Leicester, unveiled its new "biometric unit" yesterday. Officials demonstrated how the equipment can read fingerprints and analyse faces of people applying for a Biometric Residence Permit, which were first launched in 2008.Orwellian "face-recognising equipment" installed in a Post Office crammed into the basement of a shop because the Crown Post Office has been closed. What better monument could there be to the last Labour government? ...
Welcome to Broxtowe Enews, brought to you by the Liberal Democrats and edited by David Watts, the leader of the Lib-Dems on Broxtowe Borough Council. 1. Travellers We've had a lot of problems with a group of travellers in the south of the borough over the past week or two. They moved onto Manor Farm in Toton, disrupting sports activities and causing upset to many people. The council moved very quickly to obtain a court order forcing them to leave, but they only moved down the road to Chilwell School. They have now moved on from there but left a ...
Saturday was education day at the Lib Dem conference. Education is dear to the hearts of most Lib Dems, but the party struggles to come up with a clear party line beyond the important policy of Pupil Premium, where state funding of schools is uplifted for those with poorer pupils. This drift was on show yesterday. There were two motions, one on early years and the other on schools. Both came over rather worthy but wishy washy wish lists, with a rather nanny state tendency on show. The most contentious point on the early years motion was the support for ...
People who know me know that I really don't like Tom Harris, the current MP for Glasgow South. Hell, my second blog post was basically about him being totally awful on the issue of tuition fees (a lie he continues to this day), and he relishes in being the tribal kind of Labour MP, especially on Twitter. So savvy he is on Twitter, that he became Labour's internet adviser. Until he posted a Downfall parody of Alex Salmond, effectively comparing the Scottish National Party leader to Adolf Hitler. Yep. After he lost the Scottish Labour leadership election, he might've been ...
This morning saw an unusual event for Lib Dems at the moment - a public Thank You! Over two years ago Lib Dems committed to do our very best to stop the iniquitous practice of locking up children in detention centres like Yarls Wood which are just like prisons, when their only "crime" was to have parents whose application for asylum here had not succeeded. The pledge was made in response to a
......Tax the competition. A small levy on UK broadband providers - no more than £2 a month on each subscriber's bill - could be distributed to news providers in proportion to their UK online readership. This would solve the financial problems of quality newspapers, whose readers are not disappearing, but simply migrating online. So say's Guardian columnist David Leigh. So. If your industry is going down the swanny because of new methods of distribution (interweb) upstart competition (Commercial news blogs & sites) or a failing business model (most print news papers.) Don't bother adapting your product to one that people ...
Instead of being at the BOTYs, I was accompanying Ros to a surprise event, a dinner to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary of the election of a Liberal to Brighton Council. That young Liberal candidate was Navnit, now Baron, Dholakia.Navnit is a very special figure to me, as his experiences are similar to those of my father, and when our paths first crossed fifteen years ago, we hit it off immediately. We would, thereafter run into each other occasionally, but ten years later, he was to play an unexpected role in events that changed my life forever.I had not been seeing ...
The Greyfriars site yesterday, with Leicester Cathedral in the background Stopping only to make an observation I have already made here about the irony of Richard's remains being found in the car park of Leicester's social services department, Maev Kennedy talks to some of the archaeologists involved in the dig at Greyfriars: Getting permission to excavate after years of research by local historians and the Richard III Society, was surprisingly easy, said Professor Lin Foxhall, one of the archaeologists from Leicester University who led the team, "because nobody expected us to find anything". "I didn't expect us to find anything," ...
I originally wrote this piece for Gay Star News. This week Gay Star News reported on the death of Augusto Murillo, a gay Colombian dancer, following a silicone injection. It seems that the man's low self-esteem, stemming from poor self-image, was responsible for him seeking out means by which to tackle his "inadequacies". While fortunately cases of death in such circumstances are rare, there can be no escaping the terrible reality that such a lack of body confidence affects an increasing number of young gay men and that the fashion and beauty industries' power and commercial aggression has significantly contributed. ...
There is, occasionally, a moment when someone says something, and it triggers a memory which would have been much more useful a few hours earlier. So, when last night someone mentioned who had won the Liberal Democrat Voice 'Blog of the Year' Awards, it did cross my mind that I had intended to be there... tonight. Hmmm... not one of my more glorious moments. Admittedly, I was at one of the most enjoyable events I've ever been to at a Liberal Democrat conference, but nonetheless... And, to make matters worse, I'd been nominated for an award, that for the best ...
Sigh, it's now time again to wield the might fingers and tap my keyboard against the horrendous bias we have in the broadcast media against the Liberal Democrats. I've just sent an email thus: I was interested to see that at about 18:15 today (Sunday 23rd September) you reported two polls for the Lib Dems ...
SITA have just tweeted: "We're pleased to advise that the Yate recycling centre in South Glos will be open on Mon 24 Sep (8am - 6.30pm). Normal service resumed"
Planning permission has been granted to Churngold for importing clay, subsoil and topsoil on the site at Beech Hill Farm, Westerleigh Road (known locally as "the place that sells the fireworks") However there are quite a few conditions. They have to complete tipping within two years from starting, and then plant the area within the following three months. Nothing except uncontaminated excavated natural materials can be deposited on the site. Hours of work are limited to 08.00 - 18.00 hours, Monday to Friday and 08.00 - 13.00 hours on Saturdays. Wheel washing facilities and on site turning areas have to ...
If you don't already know, I am an avid supporter of Clegg (even if I think he's entirely doomed). I didn't, and still don't, quite know what to make of the apology yet. But much more significantly is how people have reacted. The ratio of likes to dislikes, the persistent hate in the comments sums
I was brought up under the influence of the Church of England and the Book of Common Prayer, so each Sunday morning and evening, as a choirboy, I was exhorted to confess my "manifold sins and wickedness" and not to "dissemble nor cloke them." It's a pity this has gone out of fashion, because there seems to be a good deal of dissembling and cloking going on in modern society, among all sorts and conditions of men and women, and not just in the Liberal Democrats. I can distinctly remember in the past how I felt great/not quite so great about things that happened, how I did/didn't look forward to prospective events. Yet here I am, having got back from an eleven day trip to Europe and about 9 days before I go to university. I see and hear of people's
Son's homework was to produce a poem about trench warfare. Which prompted me to write one of my own. Cowering in the Corner The end is in sight, surely that is the score I'm cowering in the corner, back to the wall It may be the final hour, but I still doubt That war was the answer to resolve it at all Trench foot is disgusting, I've almost lost a limb Rats run around, they're messing with my head Lice in my hair, clothes reduced to rags, Brothers-in-arms lie around me, they're all dead Counting the cost of charges into ...
The state of Westerleigh Road between Wot Not and the Shire Way roundabout has been a growing concern for local people - it's a nightmare for cyclists in particular. South Glos has told us that patching is to take place late September/early October from Nibley Lane to The Old Parsonage. This is to rectify the two trenches that are causing significant problems. In addition to this Westerleigh Road, from Shire Way right through to the Kidney Hill junction, has been added to a surface dressing programme which will be carried out in the summer of 2014. In order for this ...

In those heady days that followed the post-debate Clegg-bounce during the last election, one issue suddenly began to dominate on the doorsteps: immigration. Spooked by the Lib Dem surge, the Conservatives and their willing allies in the press sought to deflate the Clegg bubble by returning to dog whistle issues, such as immigration. Whether this approach greatly affected the final outcome is questionable, but there is no doubt it forced many candidates on the defensive. Rather than having an opportunity to talk about our positive policies we were spending time trying to counter the perception that we were 'soft' on ...
Last night witnessed the seventh annual Lib Dem Blog of the Year awards. You can find out all about the nominees and winners here. Particular congrats to Mark Thompson, winner of the overall Best Blog prize. It was my great pleasure to introduce the awards, and here's what I said (more or less)... My name's Stephen Tall, co-editor of Lib Dem Voice, and it's my pleasure to welcome you to the seventh annual Lib Dem Blog of the Year awards. The BOTYs as they've become affectionately known with a nod towards our party's love of single entendre. And I'll come ...
The Indy's Jane Merrick reports today some of the results from the latest LibDemVoice survey of 550+ party members. Here's the page 2 report: [IMG: image] Nick Clegg has lost the confidence of Liberal Democrat members, a poll reveals for the first time today, as the Deputy Prime Minister attempts to persuade his party to stick with him for the "second half" of the coalition government. A poll for Lib Dem Voice of paid-up party members, seen by The Independent on Sunday, shows that the Lib Dem leader's personal rating has fallen below zero for the first time, to minus ...
"No Easy Way to say this...." - Thank you for listening at the East Midlands Fundraiser

The BBC were using Simon and Garfunkel's original recording of this in a trailer last week. Here are The Bangles reminding us that there was more to them than "Eternal Flame" with this rocking version. Not quite The Liverbirds, but still good.
Cllr Stephen West has had enough of the Conservatives and gone off to UKIP. It leaves the Conservatives with 30 of the 60 Councillors and dependent on the casting votes of the Mayor. In the past you felt too much was whipped through by the majority and you sensed that no one took opposition comments seriously, though the constructive ones were often drowned out in a sea of rather pointless
I'm typing this quickly because I'm about to go to a question and answer session with Nick Clegg at Lib Dem autumn conference where I intend to ask an awkward question if I get called to speak. So, just as a brief update, at 15.05 I go to the question and answer session with Nick Clegg, where I have submitted this question: What is fair or liberal about us cutting Disability Living Allowance by 20% and taking Employment Support Allowance away from vulnerable sick and disabled people? After which, it's my Equal Citizenship motion, which is backed by party members including ...
Some weeks ago I was asked by a friend on Facebook to assist in the setting up of a new social group. I was hopeful that a group such as this would be great for the building-up of our community in our part of the city of Belfast. Today, as the result of a Facebook ...
The Independent View: Why Lib Dems should vote against the Secret Courts Bill on Tuesday
On Tuesday, Liberal Democrat conference will debate a Bill which strikes at the heart of liberal principles. The Justice and Security Bill will effectively put ministers and government officials above the law. If this is to be avoided, it is essential that Liberal Democrats vote for the motion, unamended. Under the Bill, the state will be able to kick anyone bringing a case against them out of court simply by claiming 'national security' is at risk - a claim which has been used to cover up Government involvement in torture and rendition all too often during the 'War on Terror'. ...
So where are we with Grant Shapps? We recently blogged about his - how shall I put it? - colourful history when it comes to the internet and then came news that he appears to have signed off the demolition of demolition of many houses in the North by accident. Yesterday's Guardian revealed that, while a Conservative candidate, attended "a $3,000-a-head internet conference in Las Vegas" under a false name. The newspaper printed a photograph of him wearing a 'Michael Green' name badge on its front page. That photo also revealed that Shapps has the eyes of Beelzebub though, to ...
It's very clear that Nick Clegg doesn't watch "The Thick of It"; in the last episode, the hapless (presumably Tory) minister Peter Mannion (played with expert grumpiness by Roger Allam) is rushed back from a vacuous, cliché laden retreat to address a crisis. En route, he's offered a selection of ties: he rejects a rainbow ...

Cable: no to regional pay; Clegg: yes to taxes on wealth; Alexander: tougher tax rules
News snippets from today: Speaking on the Andrew Marr Show this morning, the Liberal Democrat leader ruled out the possibility of the Government filling the gap in public finances through cuts to the welfare budget - something reportedly being mooted on the Conservative benches. He said the Government would "start at the top and work down", and was optimistic about his chances of persuading his Conservative colleagues to agree to a so-called 'wealth tax'. [Politics Home] Cable said that introducing regional pay was "completely unacceptable" and "terrible economics". He said that although the Lib Dems were prepared to contemplate a ...
Vince might be Yoda to some, but he's invincible to me!
I think everyone agrees that while Nick's original "Apology' video got people talking, it is the Autotune 'Sorry' Video that has achieved the real cut through, and perhaps made people really start evaluating the apology. Why? These two illustrations make the case. Here's a word cloud of Nick's original speech on the video. And now here's the same cloud - but for the Music Video The first isn't dominated by any single message. There's a ton of words which share equal import and so its hard to take single message out. The second is dominated by two words. I'm Sorry. ...
Alexender Lukashenka, President of Belarus, is known as 'Europe's last dictator'. Amazingly Lukashenka has now turned his authoritarian regime on soft toys. A Swedish PR firm parachuted teddy bears with messages about democracy over Minsk in an attempt to break through the media censorship imposed by the regime. Since then Lukashenka has asked all Swedish Diplomats to leave the country and begun a diplomatic dispute over the issue. Later two journalists were arrested in Belarus for protesting against the regime by taking a photo of themselves with a soft toy. You could not make this up. This is the surreal ...

What Lib Dem members think about the third Heathrow runway and increased aviation capacity
Lib Dem Voice polled our members-only forum recently to discover what Lib Dem members think of various political issues, the Coalition, and the performance of key party figures. Some 550 party members have responded, and we're publishing the full results. Big thumbs-up to party's continuing policy to oppose third Heathrow runway... LDV asked: Do you support or oppose building a third runway at Heathrow airport? 12% – Support 79% – Oppose 9% – Don't know The Tories may be preparing to U-turn on a third runway in readiness for their 2015 general election manifesto, but Lib Dems remain resolutely opposed ...
Here in the Brighton the party has really embraced the Nivk Clegg apology. The Liberal Democrat Image stand, which sells branded party goods even as mugs and badges for sale emblazoned with the leader's photograph and the textbook his apology. Most representatives think Clegg did the right thing and naturally there is a clamour for other party leaders to follow suit, a mood that has been picked up by the Sunday Telegraph today. Some of their examples are a bit esoteric but I definitely agree with this one, that Ed Miliband's should say: SORRY: for being a key player in ...

I'm not at Lib Dem conference this year - too much going on in Cornwall and, sadly, it's a very expensive week away - but last night I won an award at the annual Blog of the Year bash. The awards have been going for some time. They are hosted by Liberal Democrat Voice, the site created for and run by party activists. The categories include best new blog, best use of e-campaigning, best blog by an elected person, best non-party liberal blog and blog of the year. Together with lots of others, I was shortlisted for the best use ...

This is for the areas around Bloomfield Drive, and Kingsway. The rest of Odd Down is due later as part of another part of this project. We support this proposal as it will help slow down speeds in residential areas. We have been asked if it is a way of the police getting more money via fines. This is not the case, we would envisage that enforcement will only occur in extreme cases, where there

September 20 was Myelofibrosis Awareness Day in the US, see http://bit.ly/SfKg8I You wouldn't expect there to be much awareness of this or other myeloproliferative neoplasms in the UK, but it would be good if there was an information website on all rare blood cancers. What does exist? Either the most elementary descriptions of these diseases, or papers from learned journals that require detailed knowledge of haematology to be understood, with nothing in between.
Congratulations to Mark Thompson. A View from Ham Common has all the other winners - congratulations to them too.
That was the question House Magazine asked me for its Lib Dem Conference Special Edition, and here's what I told them: Only rarely does it make sense for a political party to concentrate on something other than what the public says is the most important issue facing them and their families. Now it not one of those exceptions, so it is the economy that should top the list for Liberal Democrats over the next year. It is not only the importance of the economy it its own right; it is also that without greater economic success there is very little ...

Earlier this week, I linked to James Graham's piece on Clegg and the coalition, in which he mentioned my post on ending the coalition. This isn't just incestuous blogging back-patting – James made some points about my post which I promised to think over and respond to. He wrote: But Lib Dems who imagine that there is some dividend to be earned by leaving the coalition early are simply misguided. The public won't thank them - they'll simply conclude the Lib Dems are even more of a waste of time. By contrast, there is a historic, long term gain to ...

Interviewed by The Independent, new International Development minister Lynne Featherstone stood by the target of giving 0.7% of GDP in international aid, and moreover setting that target in law: Featherstone is adamant that the 0.7 per cent figure will be enshrined in law "as soon as we can get a legislative slot" and that Greening is "absolutely committed to it". I was very surprised and honoured to win the Lib Dem Blog of the Year award at the BOTYs held here in Brighton last night. The BBC reports: The rebel Free Syrian Army (FSA) has announced that it has moved its command centre from Turkey to "liberated areas" inside Syria. A video posted on YouTube appeared to show the leader of the FSA, Riad al-Asaad, confirming the move. Given the brutality of the Syrian regime, the best future for Syria comes from it being ousted – which is why the failure of the attempts to introduce a ceasefire may well turn out to have been the best outcome for the country. Keeping Assad in power is not the route to a happy future.
