Barbican, 1969

From the City of London website: During the Second World War the City suffered appalling damage and loss of life. The Cripplegate area was virtually demolished and by 1951 the resident population stood at only 48, with 5,324 in the whole City. Discussions started in 1952 on what sort of redevelopment should take place on the devastated site. Many people involved with the City of London voiced their concern at the dwindling number of residents living within the Square Mile and plans were considered for returning a stable population. A report was presented and the Court of Common Council, of ...

[IMG: image] All, Most will have heard of Warwickshire County Council's plan to switch of street lights overnight in Shipston (and all over the rest of the County). Shipston Town Council discussed the issue recently, and decided to launch a petition against the move, mainly following concerns about road safety and the risk of crime. Councillor Mel Trapp has been leading the campaign, so all credit should be given to her! Just to help in distributing the petition you can download it below. To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the longest running science fiction show in the world I am taking a weekly look at some of my favourite Dr Who episodes focusing on one Doctor a month. This month it's the Second Doctors turn. This week. The War Games. The Doctor, Jamie and Zoe land on no man's land in world war one and quickly end up being accused of being German spys. But why have so many people lost their memories, why are generals acting a little suspiciously and who exactly is directing the course of the war? Epic does not ...

One of the many good things about Boxmoor Primary School - in my day it was housed in a long-demolished Victorian building - was that we got read stories at the end of the day. And one of these was set locally. Bruce Carter's Peril on the Iron Road told of the building of the London to Birmingham Railway through Hertfordshire and the attempts of a local aristocrat to prevent it. I wonder if a children's book written today (Peril on the Iron Road dates from 1953) would be quite so firmly on the side of Progress? A few years ...

Labour MP Tristram Hunt has well and truly stuck his neck out about how Labour needs to do really well in Eastleigh: "Ed Miliband decided to fight to win with a high-profile candidate. 'Nag' food producers

The horsemeat scandal continues and now Germany's development minister has asked for the products that have been affected to be distributed to the poor. There is nothing wrong with that if food producers are taking their food off the shelves and there are no health implications to eating the food. If these products are being destroyed simply because they need relabelling then we need to do a lot of 'nagging'. It is simply not right to destroy good food. The question is whether it is good. If I were buying a beef product and horse was given to me then ...

Schadenfreude, the malicious enjoyment of another's misfortune, is not a very noble sentiment, but I shall indulge in it without restraint in relation to George Osborne's humiliation now that Britain has lost its AAA credit rating from one of the three major agencies. The fact that the goal of retaining the "coveted" rating as the principle objective of Osborne's "austerity" policy was the wrong one because: it was based on a lie: there was never any evidence that the UK was about to lose the confidence of the markets: the ploy was and is simply a convenient cover for the ...

The Downgrade

There are principally two dimensions to any such event - the political and the economic. Politically, this is bad news for the Coalition, in particular the central leadership of the Coalition and especially among that small group, the Chancellor. Having used the AAA rating as a stick to beat the Opposition at every possible opportunity, the Chancellor now finds it snatched from his hands and gifted to the Opposition to use against him. For Ed Miliband, it must feel like Christmas - a chance to turn the whole economic narrative against the government, shifting the large section of public opinion ...

There I was a week ago, drawing parallels between the way Amazon organises its warehouses and Radio 4's dramatisation of Orwell's 1984. I didn't mean to single out Amazon alone - this is the way modern management is going, and for all of their poor benighted employees. But I really had no idea. I wasn't aware at the time of the German TV's investigation of the Amazon warehouse there, where migrant workers are kept in order by a semi-military cadre of guards, some of them with disturbing neo-Nazi links. After a protracted battle, including imprisonment and several by-elections, he eventually won the right for members of both houses of parliament to affirm instead of swear an oath. A taxing ambition

As I set off to Eastleigh to help the Liberal Democrats hold onto Chris Huhne's former seat, it seems appropriate to highlight this article in yesterday's Independent which sets out the party's ambition to take even more low earners out of tax altogether. Danny Alexander, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury, wants us to ensure that nobody earning the minimum wage should have to pay tax. That is a proposal that shows up Labour's lack of ambition. ...
