The road from Saddington to Smeeton Westerby.

As a follow-up to the 1962 Spondon village centre photographs I posted here last weekend, these are the remaining images from the same film that were taken elsewhere in the village. The first is the junction of Willowcroft Road with South Avenue. Willowcroft Road sweeps round to the left. At the top of the hill is the junction with Sitwell ... The post Spondon in 1962: outside of the centre appeared first on ten pence piece.

Andrea Leadsom believes that: Being a mother makes you better suited to be a leader, but Maternity leave should be cut Yeah, right. P.S. As Jonathan Calder points out, Andrea Leadsom's campaign manager had a go at then Lib Dem MP Sarah Teather for not having children. Jo Swinson put it well then: Using someone's lack of children as an insult is shameful, crass and, frankly, disgusting. It reflects far more on him than on Sarah.

Most of the progressive side of social media is frothing in collective disgust at Andrea Leadsom's comments in today's Times (£). There is no doubt that they were absolutely disgusting. After explaining that, as a former banker, she understands "how the economy works and can really focus on turning it around" — unlike, by implication, the home secretary — she stresses that she is a "member of a huge family and that's important to me. My kids are a huge part of my life, my sisters and my two half brothers are very close so I am very grounded and ...

In the days after the Referendum, Nicola Sturgeon assembled a team to advise the Scottish Government on all aspects of Brexit. Academics, financial, legal and constitutional experts will be making sure that Sturgeon and her team get well-informed advice. Former Lib Dem Secretary of State for Scotland Michael Moore, now an adviser with PwC, welcomed this move and said that the UK Government should do the same. The Herald has the story: He praised the expertise of those who will be advising the First Minister. "Everybody on that panel, you can see how they have earned their place, and they ...

Defusing non-Brexit

I've been thinking a bit about how best to negotiate the situation in which the UK did not - or at least not in the near future - trigger Artlcle 50 to start the process of Brexit. The prospect that our next Prime Minister will be a reality-phobic extreme right-wing Brexiteer who will press the big red button at the earliest opportunity is becoming ever greater. So reflecting on non-Brexit might strike you as a quixotic enterprise. But we each have to do whatever it takes to keep the darkness at bay. In my last post I set out why ...

An article on the Times Red Box website examined the potential for a Liberal Democrat comeback following the EU Referendum. I spoke to the journalist who wrote it, Natasha Clark, and may have compared Tim Farron to another Liberal leader from across the Atlantic: They had a dynamic leader who made the case, harnessed the mood of the people with a very simple message. I think we will soon have a majority of people who don't want to leave the EU, and we will be there to make that case. Tim Farron was also interviewed and he had a right ...

[IMG: Square] It's called Square, and it's produced by my longtime friends The Pensive Federation. Key facts: It has a cast of four awesome actors. It's inspired by the "square" concept. It's an hour long. It's been developed through the PenFed's tried and tested process of workshops. It's on at the Tristan Bates Theatre as part of the Camden Fringe from Monday 8th to Saturday 13th August at 7.30pm each night. Tickets are available from the Tristan Bates website.

Those of us who have been saying for some time that Leave campaigners such as Nigel Farage want to turn back the clock to a fictional 1950s and a gentler, whiter Britain have been proved right with the campaign that their cheerleader, Andrea Leadsom is now running to become the next British Prime Minister. Like Farage and company she seems to want to take us back to an imaginary world in which we all lived wholesome lives, went to church on a Sunday and dominated the international stage. Of course the Brexit vote has undermined any chance that we will ...

Not only did we have Sal Brinton on Question Time this week, but Tim Farron took part in last night's Any Questions. You can listen to the whole thing here. Key points included Tim talking about Chilcot. He said that the conclusions were "massively grave" and there was a juxtaposition between Blair's absolute determination to go to war and the complete and total absence of any planning after the conflict. All of us, he said, were less safe because of that decision. Charles Kennedy stands vindicated by Chilcot. He said that he found it objectionable that in two hours of ...

I'm reading David Laws' Coalition at the moment and one of the recurring themes is the drama and tribulation around virtually every budget and Autumn Statement. Pulling all the measures together involved tortuous and protracted intrigue as both coalition parties tried to advance their own policy priorities – and the Liberal Democrats usually came out on top. So it amused me when I saw an article in his local Sheffield newspaper showing Nick practising some different but no less important budgeting skills – helping young children learn financial skills at a primary school in his constituency. It had been a ...

Implosion: To collapse, to explode inwards. Also, to fail miserably at something. The political spectrum is something which has always facinated me. How people can hold such diverse views and believe they hold the moral high ground etc. is interesting. I do not condone extreme views but we have to accept they exist. This won't come as a surprise to anyone who knows me, but I have never been a fan of Tony Blair, or David Cameron. What they did to UK politics though was quite clever (as an overview). Tony Blair realised that to hold left wing views would ...

A return to that knotty problem of the railway powers that be making all trains from Southport, Burscough, Parbold etc. run into Manchester Victoria Station from 2017. A bad idea if ever I heard one as it is clear that rail travellers on the line want half the trains to continue to go through to Manchester Piccadilly as they do now. [IMG: Defending Bootle from.....] The army were out with artillery next to Bootle's soon and very sadly to be closing M&S store last week but what were they doing, defending or indeed attacking? A few possibilities:- * Were they there to 'advise' protestors about the dangers of trying to stop M&S from closing? * Were they there (at Sefton Council's behest?) to fire a salute to Bootle's very own UKIP national leader in waiting Paul Nuttall? * Were they there to take pot-shots at joy riders on scrambler bikes who seem to like riding through the Strand shopping centre malls? ...

I know you have every right to disregard me on this topic given I said Michael Gove was a sure fire bet to be our next prime minister. I will only retort that I figured there would have to be a Brexiter in the final two and that the parliamentary Conservative party would realise that having Andrea Leadsom on the ticket instead of Gove would be sheer madness given the Euroscepticism of the members. I vastly overestimated the sanity/intelligence of Tory MPs and for that I whole heartedly apologise. But I come back to my logic for why I thought ...

Embed from Getty Images Tim Loughton is Andrea Leadsom's campaign manager. In September 2013 the Telegraph quoted a speech of his to Conservative activists: "The person who was actually in charge of family policy amongst the ministerial team at the DfE was Sarah Teather. Which was a bit difficult because she didn't really believe in family. "She certainly didn't produce one of her own. So it became a bit of a family-free zone. I think that was a huge disappointment."Loughton later told the BBC that he would apologist to Teather. Jo Swinson had it right in her quote in the ...
