The Kibworth Harcourt Trail leaflet says the Rose and Crown was once: the most famous coaching stop in Kibworth, with up to twenty-four coaches a say stopping day and night for passengers' rest or refreshments, or to change horses. It was open as a pub into the 1990s and as an Indian restaurant after that. The leaflet says it is believed in was built in the 18th century but, externally at least, the building I photographed today looks Edwardian. The Francis Frith site has a postcard of it in the 1950s. It bears a sign saying it has been acquired for ...

Welcome to Broxtowe Enews, brought to you by the Liberal Democrats and edited by David Watts, on behalf of the Lib-Dems in Broxtowe. May I give a special welcome to the new readers who have subscribed over the summer. One big change that has happened with this edition is that we are now hoping to produce this on a Saturday rather than a Sunday. I now have a commitment on a Sunday evening and so it is no longer very easy to produce the newsletter then. Because there has been a long break since the last edition I have included ...

No sign yet of an answer to the question about how the Liberal Democrats can revive their electoral fortunes. While I enjoy my Caffè Bellotti As it turned out, I have more pencils than I remembered. I also decided to rearrange the Liberal Philosophy section: would you believe I had my Hobsons shelved before my Hobhouses? If any of my friends had noticed, I should never have lived it down. Then I had to lean out of the window and advise Meadowcroft, who was trimming the edges of my croquet lawn in preparation for a match against the Deputy Returning ...

Five years on

Actually it's only four years and ten months years since we had the first consultation on the replacement skate park for Consett. A lot of water has passed under the bridge since then – the whole debate about the site for the Academy, a local council election, the demolition and rebuilding at Belle Vue, but the passage time only made yesterday's opening of the new skate park more satisfying. [IMG: skatepark] It was good to have so many young people there to celebrate, and especially those who had taken part in designing the new facility

Second paragraph of third chapter: It was evening once more and Hazel and Fiver were feeding outside the wood with two friends. Blackberry, the rabbit with tipped ears who had been startled by Fiver the night before, had listened carefully to Hazel's description of the notice board, remarking that he had always felt sure that men left these things about to act as signs or messages of some kind, in the same way that rabbits left marks on runs and gaps. It was another neighbor, Dandelion, who had now brought the talk back to the Threarah and his indifference to ...

Every time I hear the word Mosborough, it makes me smile. What a brilliant result. From 14% and 4th place just 4 months ago, the Liberal Democrats took a stunning victory in a local by-election on Thursday night. I'm told Mosborough is a bellweather ward in Sheffield so it may well reflect how voters across the city are feeling. This takes me back to the 90s when we were routinely winning by-elections against Labour in Sheffield and Chesterfield. Let's hope that Thursday's victory is a big leap forward to getting that sort of success again. The Sheffield Star has some ...

Wales' Education Secretary Liberal Democrat Kirsty Williams ruled out a return to 11-plus in Wales and said: "It seems that some terrible ideas just won't go away. "The Tories in England and Wales seem determined to bang this tired old drum. For them, this is all about dogma and doctrine, rather than looking at what actually works for our young people. "The facts show that grammar schools do nothing to improve social mobility. The Sutton Trust found that less than 3% of grammar school pupils were on free school lunches, compared with 20% across the country. "The Welsh Liberal Democrats ...

Dearie me. Twice in a week, the government has been caught on the hop a top secret documents have been photographed and have appeared in the press. Unless, of course, it was planned that way. You never know, these days. Perhaps people think The Thick of It was a documentary or something. First it was grammar schools and now it's the possibility of a free vote on Heathrow expansion as Channel 4 news revealed: In the second security breach of its kind in a week, a London Underground passenger filmed a very senior Cabinet Office civil servant holding a paper ...

The Severn Tunnel will be closed between Monday 12 September and Friday 21 October but Great Western Railway are keen to reassure you that their services will still be running - with trains being diverted or replaced by buses. Alternative timetables will operate throughout the work, with journeys to London taking about 35 minutes longer and Bristol 45 minutes longer. This is essential work towards bringing electrification through to Cardiff and Swansea. Full details of the changes are on their website.

Was Michael Gove right?

On 3rd June 2016, Michael Gove drew ridicule when he stated "People in this country have had enough of experts". However, Theresa May's announcement that her government are now seeking to actively support1 the reintroduction of selective schools goes against all evidence-based expert opinion. We mocked Mr Gove but the reintroduction of selective schools may well prove he was right. There appears to widespread support across the right-wing press and the Telegraph website is currently indicating 77% of their readership support the policy. To make such an argument, I accept that I do need to present credible evidence undermining the ...

Party like it's 1981

Imagine that, alongside Michael Foot as leader, Tony Benn had won the deputy leadership of the Labour Party in 1981; it almost happened. Would the creation of the SDP then seem wrong even to Labour loyalists and even today? There is certainly a view within the Labour Party, shared with The Guardian editorial writers, that a way must be found to keep the current party together rather than face the alternative: "No one who remembers or knows about past divisions, notably the breakaway of the Social Democratic party in 1981, should want a return to that." The argument runs that ...

I recently read an article which pointed out that, if there were a school with two dinner queues, a short one which specially attractive dishes reserved for those pupils who scored As and Bs for their work, and a much longer one with more mundane food for the rest, we should be horrified. But by selective education we do exactly that, and the reward for the selected is not just a tastier lunch, but all the best opportunities in life. I trained as a teacher in the late 1950s and the evidence about grammars versus comprehensives has not changed much ...

Working on the principle that a good blog needs sensational headlines and good pictures of cats, this story was a natural for a quiet Saturday morning. The media is full of stories about Gladstone, number 11's new cat who, in between baiting Larry next door, has proved to be an extremely effective mouser. We are told that since Gladstone was brought in from an animal shelter in July, he has already killed six mice. This rodent bloodbath is in sharp contrast to the dire mousing record of his famously lazy neighbour Larry, who only killed his first mouse after six ...

The place in Westminster which contains most light and least heat is Westminster Hall. MPs can call a debate on whatever subject and often these turn out to be thoughtful, considered affairs where people behave like grown-ups and discuss the issues rather than throw brickbats at each other. This week, Norman Lamb led a debate on the need for early intervention when someone has had an episode of Psychosis. In fact, it was Norman and Nick Clegg who were responsible for the introduction of a maximum two week waiting time to be seen after the first episode of Psychosis. Introducing ...

I have been listening to the radio over the past few days with increasing fury. Theresa May's speech, standing on the steps of No.10 Downing Street, spoke of social inclusion and mobility. I never believed it. One's cynicism seems to be borne out with her announcement on the reintroduction of new grammar schools in England and increased powers for religious schools. My father was born in 1935 and died in 2001. He was from Hartlepool in the northeast of England and from a poor background. He is no longer around for me to check the details but what follows is ...

The recent increase in hate crimes against Eastern Europeans in the UK has rightly been met with condemnation from across the political spectrum. Some dismiss this is a post-referendum spasm which will quickly ebb away. I fear that may not be the case and the Brexit decision may cause long-term damage to community cohesion and open a Pandora's box of nasty populist politics. Let me explain why. Brexiteer leaders - Farage, Fox, Johnson - made promises which are already unravelling. They told voters that leaving the EU would lead to better NHS services, improved job prospects and smaller class sizes. ...
