Welcome to Broxtowe Enews, brought to you by the Liberal Democrats and edited by David Watts, on behalf of the Lib-Dems in Broxtowe. May I give a special welcome to the new readers that we have this week. Many apologies that there was no newsletter last week but I was out on Saturday night and did not have time to produce an edition. 1. Robin Hood Network Nottingham City Council have announced that Robin Hood Cards, which can be used in Beeston and Chilwell, are to be extended so that children's tickets and a range of other new services will become ...

Yesterday, I reported plans by Shropshire Housing Group (SHG) to build bungalows on the green between Charlton Rise and Sidney Road. This article brings news that SHG has also submitted plans to build bungalows behind Houseman Crescent and on a green at the end of Poyner Road. The plans are not yet on Shropshire Council's planning portal. I'll add links as soon as they are. SHG has previously looked at building bungalows to replace the garages on Lacy Road but that scheme hasn't been submitted for planning approval. Houseman Crescent SHG has drawn up proposals for four bungalows off Houseman ...

"I think a Labour victory is more likely than a Lib Dem one, but I think a Lib Dem victory is definitely not unlikely." Andrew Hickey explains why the Manchester Gorton by-election could be won by Jackie Pearcey and the Liberal Democrats. Geoff Crocker on the UK's ritual humiliation of disabled people: "The part of the interview which required the applicant to demonstrate capability of physical movement such as bending to touch the floor, or showing knee reflex, was utterly humiliating, as such needs are neither part of the medical condition nor of our PIP application. I am a pretty ...

The Liberal Democrats are not dead and neither is blogging. In March three new blogs appeared on the LibDemBlogs aggregator in March. Thanks as ever to Ryan Cullen for sending me the details. Challenging Journeys (Phase 2) is written by Helen Belcher and offers "a short wander through the mind of a probationary politician". Here she writes about Nick Clegg's Newsnight film about Ebbw Vale: "Investment needs to be better targeted. If you don't think you're going to get a good job, there is little incentive to get a good education. So it's jobs that are needed, together with investment ...

The polling figures continue to be grim for Labour, both compared with the current Conservative Party ratings and also compared with the last Parliament as the latest quarterly averages show.

I thoroughly recommend the TV series "Dictatorland", which is going out on BBC Three at the moment. You can watch the episodes as they are published on BBC iPlayer. Young journalist and filmmaker Benjamin Zand travelled, at some risk to him and his crew, to a number of countries which still have dictatorships. So far, ... There's been much made of late of the notion that we are living in 'filter bubbles'. One such bubble which most of us inhabit without especially considering it, is existing almost entirely amongst people who believe that free and fair elections are the right way to determine who leads a country. That makes the video [...]

Embed from Getty Images I thoroughly recommend the TV series "Dictatorland", which is going out on BBC Three at the moment. You can watch the episodes as they are published on BBC iPlayer. Young journalist and filmmaker Benjamin Zand travelled, at some risk to him and his crew, to a number of countries which still have dictatorships. So far, his trips to Belarus, Tajikstan and Kazahkstan have been broadcast. Zand acts as our guide in a very appealing and informative way. The programmes are truly fascinating. He describes the dictator and the country's political regime, and meets people who have ...

When I first read this, I was sure it was an April Fool, but apparently not. I had never heard of "chessboxing" before. Apparently it's alternate rounds of boxing and chess. Yes, you read that right. Two more incongruous pastimes you couldn't imagine – although both require a capacity for strategic thought. Tonight, according to Politico, in London, Lib Dem activist and experienced chess-boxer will take on Jonathan Arnott, UKIP MEP in a chessboxing match. It is the first time Arnott has ever been in a boxing ring. We looked into this a bit further and discovered that the event ...

As usual bin collections for the week of Easter Monday are put back one day. So, for instance, if your normal collection day is a Tuesday it will be changed to Wednesday. This week ( commencing 17th April ) is a blue bin ( ie dry recyclable ) and brown bin ( ie garden waste ) week

We hope you enjoyed our little bit of April 1 fun – although from the comments it seems that some took it seriously. Anyone want to have a guess as to which member of the team came up with this? I got it wrong when I read it for the first time. I then asked the rest of the team and got a variety of answers – but with two main suspects. The author has, since I first wrote this, revealed themselves on Facebook – so if you've seen that, don't spoil it. Sadly, it doesn't seem that the Government's ...

The other day Sheila and I had the opportunity to visit and have a guided tour of St Cuthbert's Church in Halsall, which is over 700 years old and in the same historic league as nearby Sefton Church in Sefton Village which, if I recall correctly, is a little bit older being over 800 years. Modern stained glass in St Cuthbert's – Halsall We heard about Cromwell's troops being billeted there and the damage that was seemingly done by them to stone carvings – knocking off noses and carving their initials on carved Knights gave slabs! But what we found ...

Following a gut wrenching, soul searching, gin-fuelled marathon editorial board meeting, we at Liberal Democrat Voice have an announcement to make. While we remain dismayed at the result of the Brexit referendum, and even though we can and should be somewhat smug that events so far – the lack of any plan, the collapse of the leave lies, the collapse of the pound, the surrender of the Single Market – have proven us right, we recognise that the people have chosen for all this to happen and we can no longer realistically resist it. We will, therefore, no longer be ...

Click on the photo to enlarge it Wow this is a powerful front cover from the New Statesman but sadly it does reflect how Labour, as the official opposition, has abandoned its post in our democratic processes in favour of its own internal infighting and jumping into Teresa May's bed over Brexit. And who will speak for liberal and Liberal Britain? Well you know which party is already doing that – the Lib Dems and Tim Farron. Labour, the Tories and UKIP are fighting it out as to which is best to take us back to the 1960's or 1950's ...

What's this about then? Well recently the Peterborough Telegraph reported that a chap was driving his Ferrari 458 along Main Street, near Ufford when he hit a pothole. As talks get underway on the terms of the UK's exit from the European Union, it seems that it is not just the future of the union is at stake. According to the BBC, Conservative MPs are concerned that Spain could potentially veto a UK trade deal with the EU if it does not get a say over the future of Gibraltar. Who knew? Well actually, the remain campaign were warning that this very problem would arise from a leave vote. So why are the Tory Brexiteers so surprised? The BBC says that Spain's potential veto was contained in a ...
