The widespread round of media coverage earlier today for Vince Cable's announcement that he is running to be the next leader of the Liberal Democrats shows one of his main strengths – the immediate media interest and credibility he can bring to the role. It also shows what may turn out to be a weakness too, the question of how long he would be leader for and whether that question would overshadow his leadership from day one. For even on the day of his leadership bid announcement, already there is media coverage of how he might not even stay as ...

Jo Swinson has been elected unanimously as Deputy Leader of the Liberal Democrats. The result was announced on Tuesday evening at the Liberal Democrat parliamentary party meeting. Jo will continue in her role as Liberal Democrat Shadow Foreign Secretary. Jo Swinson said: "I am very proud to have been elected by a newly energised and strengthened parliamentary party. "The government has no majority and no mandate for its extreme version of Brexit, which would do such damage to the health of our economy and the fabric of our society. "In this balanced parliament the Liberal Democrats will be a powerful ...

Roundabout Shambles

I have sent out the following email to all who signed the online petition for the roundabout at the junction of the A59 and Pendle Road. Dear friend, Over the weekend I have received some bad news and I am fuming! Work on the roundabout at the junction of Pendle Road and the A59 is not going to start until April 2018. The reason for this would seem to be that they cannot go ahead because the mini-roundabout accessing the site has not been built yet. The original plan was that the mini-roundabout was meant to be started in April ...

A Northampton ghost sign

You can find this on the south side of the Nene close to site of the old Northampton Bridge Street railway station. It is hard to read, but could end "Coal and Cattle Station".

Six of the Best 700

Vince Cable has announced that he is a candidate for the leadership of the Liberal Democrats. "Let me right at the outset define what I mean by alienation. It is the cry of the men who feel themselves the victims of blind economic forces beyond their control. It is the frustration of ordinary people excluded from the processes of decision making. The feeling of despair and hopelessness that pervades people who feel with justification that they have no say in shaping or determining their own destinies." Richard Smith rediscovers a 1972 speech by Jimmy Reid. Adrienne LaFrance explains why "at ...

In news that will surprise nobody, Jo Swinson has been confirmed as the Liberal Democrats' new Deputy Leader. Sal Brinton just posted the news in a tweet: Really delighted to hear @joswinson is new @LibDems Deputy Leader. — SalBrinton (@SalBrinton) June 20, 2017 She must have been the only nominee at the close of nominations. Had there been a contest, there would have been a hustings at next week's Parliamentary party meeting. * Caron Lindsay is Editor of Liberal Democrat Voice and blogs at Caron's Musings

The expedition reaches Dingle. The twentyeth we came to the Dingell, where Sir William Wynter, Captain Bingham, and Mr. Fowlke Greville came to us from aborde the Queen's shippes, which laye in the Bay of Dingel, a mile to the west of the Haven of Dingell. A part of that daie we passed in reviewing both havens and the towne, and also in considering what place were fittest to fortify for defence of both, which, after a long debating between the Lord Justice and the Admiral, was agreed to be in the Haven of Ventrie ; they are both notable ...

An interesting story appeared in The Guardian today, in which it emerged that there may be an attempt to judicially review any agreement entered into by Theresa May's Conservative and Unionist Party and the Democratic Unionists. Having failed to secure an overall majority in the June election, May needs the DUP, at a minimum, to abstain on all major votes if she is to command the confidence of the House of Commons and to get crucial Parliamentary bills passed. The central contention of those seeking to challenge a "confidence and supply" arrangement is that, if the UK Government were to ...

So the first candidate to throw their hat into the ring is Vince Cable. The MP for Twickenham has government experience and is the most known of the potential candidates. He could easily have been leader three years ago when an attempted coup on then leader Nick Clegg was executed. The only problem was it was as well executed as my business of Texas hot chilli in a heatwave. Who knew people didn't want to eat said food in this heat? Now though with the runaway favourite and unification candidate having ruled herself out, it is all up for grabs. ...

In A Midsummer Garden

One of the first projects for our new garden, after a few months of settling in, is repairing, repainting and re-utilising the decking. This has entailed cutting back and reshaping overgrown shrubs and plants, checking and replacing any rotten substructure and replacing worn out screws across the deck. We are going for a bold grey, pink and orange colour scheme on the deck and walls to give a Mediterranean/Mexican feel to what is turning into a lovely sun trap. The pots of salad are loving the hot weather and midsummer is only a heat haze away. Please don't forget to ...

Do you feel angry about the state of the UK at present because I do. We seem to be being run by pygmies when we need giants. Just look at the House of Commons; it's not at all an inspiring place full of MP's we can have confidence in. Our NHS, Police, social care and economy are on the slide big time yet we are one of the richest counties in the world. The human race is systematically trying to destroy the very planet we depend on via pollution, global warming and poor environmental husbandry generally. This is frankly well ...

Councillors and residents at Normandy Drive A development company has announced plans to build upmarket retirement flats on land at Normandy Drive, Yate, that was previously promised as community space. Churchill Retirement Living has announced the proposals, claiming the development would meet an "urgent need" for elderly housing. But residents who bought their homes from previous landowner Taylor Wimpey say they were told that the land would be kept for community use. The only community space on the densely-packed development is a small nature reserve area on land that was unsuitable for building anyway, and there is no provision for ...

Hi. You're being sexist.

Over the last few days, since Jo Swinson announced that she will not be standing for leader of the Liberal Democrats (since Tim Farron resigned and that's a whole other blog post in itself) the sexism from party members has really started to surface. And unfortunately, from what I'm seeing, the majority to be coming [...]

As someone who works in the fields of construction, risk management and loss prevention, it saddens me that it takes such a tragic incident to finally make this government sit up and listen to fire safety experts, who have been campaigning for years to improve fire safety of high-rise and multi-occupancy buildings. Sadly, the Grenfell Tower fire is not a new phenomenon. There have been several similar fires in the Middle Mast, the Far East and Australia, where combustible façade cladding was found to significantly contribute to fire spread up and around buildings. Advice given by the London Fire Brigade, ...

... and to nobody's surprise it is Vince Cable. I like Vince, as a person. I like his stance on bees. I like his dancing. None of those three things makes him suitable to be leader of the party, though. I mean, yes, he's got long service. And he did that one joke when he was acting leader that one time. But I'd really like something more than that to enthuse about in a potential leader. Plus, there's all the things that make him unsuitable to be leader:He's not a liberal, he's a technocratic centrist. This is fine if you ...

Questions Unasked

I'm fond of the principle of turning things around and considering the opposite claim. Take the number of times politicians regardless of stripe say "now is not the time for complacency". Perhaps I should pick one, wait for them to say it, and then message them every week thereafter asking, "is it the time for complacency yet?" It must be complacency's moment sooner or later, but if we are complacent about getting complacency its turn, it might never get its moment of not doing much in the spotlight because it didn't prepare. Whatever happens in politics or elections, the party ...

The Independent carries an interesting theory postulated by the former Deputy Prime Minister, Michael Heseltine. He has warned that the Conservative Party's electoral base is dying off at a rate of 2 per cent a year. The 84-year-old's comments come weeks after the Tory party failed to achieve an overall majority in Parliament while Labour enjoyed a gain of more than 30 seats, defying the polls and commentators. "One thing which is just worth having in mind, and you can't do anything about it, 2 per cent of the older part of the electorate die every year - they are ...
