I took this at the start of my fourth summer holiday walking the South West Coast Path. By my calculation that was in 1997 and I set out that morning from Wembury near Plymouth. I took the ferry across the Yealm, but when you reach the next estuary you have to wade.

Helen Belcher writes to the Today programme about transphobia. Mark Hobbs on an unexpected story from Iran: "Many of Isfahan's Polish children remained in the city for the duration of the War. Later on they departed for new lives in East Africa, India, Mexico and New Zealand. Memoirs shared by the Polish diaspora indicate a fond regard for their time in Iran, and for Isfahan in particular which, for many, will always be remembered as 'the city of Polish children'." "If you're anywhere near Peterborough, do visit if you can. We went on a sunny Tuesday morning in early summer. ...

At the end of last year I blogged the good news that Leicester City Council had refused developers permission to demolish the 1920s Black Boy pub in Albion Street and build a seven-storey block of flats. Developers being developers, they have appealed against the decision. You can read an account of what sounds a testy hearing in the Leicester Mercury. Today came news that another city pub is under threat. This time its the eccentric Dry Dock, a landlocked boat, on Freemen's Common. The University of Leicester wants to redevelop the area and build new accommodation blocks up to 15 ...

There will be a public Meeting at Consett Methodist Church (at the crossroad of Sherburn Terrace/Front Street and Medomsley Road/Station Road for local residents to raise their concerns and issues regarding this plant, particularly the bad smells that local residents have experienced over a prolonged period. The meeting is from 4.30 till 6.00 and is on Friday October 27th. I shall certainly be there along with other councillors and I believe that the County Council Environmental Health Team will also be in attendance.

As the Hugo administrator this year, I refrained from posting my own reviews of the finalists in the spring. But we're now 75 days on from the ceremony, and I think enough time has passed for you all to point and laugh at how my tastes differ from the voters. My general observation is that I guess I was just very tired from organising the actual awards, but I bounced off several of these. My first vote went very clearly to All the Birds in the Sky, by Charlie Jane Anders. Second paragraph of third chapter:The first week of school, ...

When Autumn leaves start to fall... we start to worry about blocked drains and slippery pavements! But we hope that you all still have the chance to enjoy this mild autumn weather, and maybe visit our beautiful (and award-winning) local parks to appreciate the fall colours and busy wildlife. It also means that it is [...]

[IMG: Sandgate Beach replenishment works (heavy plant moving shingle)] Twice a year beach replensighment works take place in the stretch of coast from Folkestone to Hythe, effectively moving the beach back every six months from where the sea and tide have tried to move it! The works are an important part of the sea flood defence works locally, protecting local properties from potential flooding from the sea in particularly high winds and tides. Having been asked to check by a local resident when the works would be carried out this Autumn, Sandgate Parish Council have been told by Shepway DC ...

This is a remarkable video clip of a 1980 NBC interview with Donald Trump. Tom Brokaw is the host for a conversation about New York real estate with a 33 year-old Trump. It is worth noting Donald Trump's mode of speech in this interview. He talks quite quickly. He uses lots of words. He doesn't stumble over those words. His sentences are perfectly formed and crisply delivered, with lots of substantive clauses and the like. And what he is talking about has quite a lot of technical detail. Is this the same man as the one who is running the ...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-41706992 The BBC has the story on its web site – see link above Liverpool Airport seems to be at a number of disadvantages in that it relies on cheap airlines for its customer base and they don't like paying much for landing/take off fees and it has no rail/light rail/tram connection to Liverpool City Centre or to the nearest mainline station. In such circumstances people get dropped off/picked up in large numbers at the airport for their travel. Would I be being unkind to say that this drop-off/pick-up traffic is being targeted as a income stream to balance the ...

Philip Hammond has rejected Sajid Javid's suggestion the government could borrow billions of pounds to to fund new housing. Vince Cable at Treasury questions yesterday said he was glad the government has agreed to borrow an additional £50bn for housebuilding. However, the Chancellor replied that this is not government policy Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable commented: "There was a brief shaft of light when it seemed the Treasury had finally agreed to finance public sector house building through borrowing. "Sadly Sajid Javid has been slapped down by the Chancellor, who denies all knowledge of the commitments that the Secretary of ...

Chris Grayling yesterday announced that a public consultation into the planned third runway at Heathrow Airport has been reopened to include new evidence. Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable commented: "I urge all those concerns about the environmental and social impact of Heathrow expansion to made their voice heard through this consultation. "The fact this consultation has had to be reopened shows the government's case remains deeply flawed. "It is difficult to see how a third runway can be delivered without breaching legal air pollution limits. "We will continue to work with other parties in Parliament to stop Heathrow expansion in ...

Yes, working hard and smart to change public opinion quickly is key to stopping Brexit. Many MP's are running scared of being accused of going against the wishes of the people, so it must be obvious to them that public opinion has changed and we have to hurry to make it so. More Brexit negotiation shambles will help, but focusing on economic and pragmatic arguments did not win us the referendum and it won't persuade many to change their opinion. People have become numb to the same old ping pong arguments. One side says this and the other the opposite ...

Liberal Democrats in the Lords, led by John Sharkey, have won key amendments to the The Financial Guidance and Claims Bill which could bring an end to cold-calls from organisations selling financial services. The Bill is designed to merge three existing financial and pension guidance services - the Money Advice Service, the Pensions Advisory Service and Pension Wise - into one Single Financial Guidance Body (SFGB).The amendments won yesterday mean that the Secretary of State will be able to bring in a ban on cold calling, if the SFGB finds cold-calling detrimental to consumer protection. Commenting, Leader of the Liberal ...

Responding to today's GDP figures, which showed the economy grew by 0.4% but the construction sector shrank for the second quarter in a row, Liberal Democrat Leader Vince Cable said: ""This is a welcome, if modest, improvement in economic growth. "But the economy is still growing at historically low levels, while people's living standards continue to be squeezed by high inflation. "It is also worrying to see the construction sector, which tends to act as an economic bellweather, tipping into recession. "The Chancellor must use next month's budget to boost the economy by investing in housing and infrastructure. "This is ...

After every General Election, the party conducts a review of the campaign so that we have a written record of what worked, what didn't work and what we need to learn for the future. The ink was barely dry on the huge number of recommendations from the 2015 campaign when we were off again. There is a difference in the process this time. In 2015, it was the job of the Campaigns Committee to run the review. This time, though, party structures have changed. The Governance Review ensured that the Campaigns and Elections Committee runs the election so they can't ...

With rumours circulating in Whitehall that the Bill has now been pushed beyond the November recess, our Tom Brake has written to David Davis, offering him a wee bit of a helping hand. . Mr Brake will be willing to work with the Secretary of State to smooth the Bill's passage through Parliament. However, there are strings attached. He wants Government support for a number of critical Liberal Democrat amendments. These include: Maintaining EU citizens' rights Ensuring the Good Friday Agreement is ...

We should be used by now with the UK Government's disregard for privacy and individual rights when it comes to legislation on data protection. However, the latest back door infringement also has a racist tinge to it. The Independent reports that new laws will give the Home Office the power to snoop on the personal data of millions of people for "immigration control". They say that a little-noticed clause smuggled into data protection legislation creates an exemption to privacy rights for immigration investigations. This has led to civil rights group Liberty to condemn the threat of "two-tier, racially discriminatory" rules. ...

Enthusiasm for Richard Thaler's work on behavioural economics means economists have more influence than ever. But their failures contributed to the financial crisis - and we're being distracted, say Tiago Mata and Jack Wright The praise is still pouring in for Richard Thaler, winner of the 2017 Sveriges Riksbank prize in economic sciences in memory of Alfred Nobel. The news was described as "wonderful", "well-deserved ... and clarifying," and BBC Radio 4's More or Less explained that Thaler is an "amazing economist". All this praise is due because Thaler has shown better than anyone that behavioural economics can be an ...
