Charlie Barlow, played by Stratford Johns, was television's most famous policeman in the Sixties and early Seventies. He appeared in Z Cars, Softly Softly and Softly Softly: Task Force, and a number of spin-off series. The most imaginative of those spin-offs involved Barlow and his long-term sidekick John Watt, played by Frank Windsor, investigating the Jack the Ripper murders. (Harry Hawkins must have been busy elsewhere.) It was broadcast in colour even though this was 1973, but the version available online is in black and white. This clip gave wide exposure to the theory that the murders were the result ...

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez revealed on Peston this morning that her husband Nick Clegg and the Liberal Democrats knew about the allegations against Jared O'Mara before June's general election. Mark Pack suggests that we should have made use of this knowledge during the campaign in Sheffield Hallam: Taking care over when to criticise the personality of an opponent is wise. But when you have evidence about issues as serious as sexism and homophobia and the person in question is bidding to become an MP, then - if you have solid evidence - raising them I would even go so far as ...

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez was on Peston this morning as one of the panel of 3 guests who are there throughout the programme. The subject of Jared O'Mara's appallingly racist, misogynist and homophobic comments came up and Miriam said something very interesting instead. She said that Labour must have known about his past because she and Nick did. That, of course, begs the question that if we knew why on earth didn't we use it during the campaign. She answered that one as well, saying that Nick refused to run a negative campaign. She pointed out the hypocrisy of Labour allowing ...

Call Me by Your Name

Is it possible for a film to be perfect? Maybe that is an absurd question, as no man-made creation can ever be utterly perfect, but some movies do reach true greatness. That is certainly the case with Luca Guadagnino's Call Me by Your Name, which is the most astounding film I have seen for years. The [...]

Baxter Dury: Miami

When I went to university in 1978 all the cool kids had a copy of Ian Dury's debut album New Boots and Panties!!, which had been released by Stiff Records the previous year. A five-year-old Baxter Dury was photographed for the its cover alongside his father. Forty years on, Baxter is an artist in his own right. Miami is a track from his fifth album, Prince of Tears, which was released this summer. Writing about Harper Simon, I suggested that it may not be possible to avoid sounding like your famous parent. I see I employed an observation about Liam ...

The Merseyrail Northern Line beyond Maghull to Ormskirk has been closed this weekend to allow engineers building the new Maghull North Railway Station to have possession of the line. This was the scene after 4pm today from various vantage points:- Looking north from the 'new' School Lane overbridge Looking north from the old School Lane overbridge under the 'new' bridge Looking south from the Park Lane overbridge back towards the station site and School Lane But clearly Mersey Avenue residents who back onto the site of the new station are unhappy with the lack of communication from Merseytravel/Network Rail with ...

The Assembly Rooms are only one item on Ludlow Town Council's agenda tomorrow. But it is one of the most important. Shropshire Council leader Peter Nutting will tell us about the future of our community and arts venue. He will also speak on the county's economic strategy. I for one don't know what that strategy does for Ludlow. Of more immediate interest to many people in the town, he will describe his vision for the future of the Assembly Rooms. The meeting is at 7pm tomorrow in the Guildhall. The public will have an opportunity to speak at the beginning ...

Riber Castle, Derbyshire

The view from Lickpenny Lane, Ashover this morning. Riber Castle is visible just above the driver's side front wheel. I remember it as a regular school and cub-scout trip haunts in the 1970s. In those days, the ruins of John Smedley's former home was home to a rather depressing zoo. The zoo closed at the turn of the millennium. More ... Liberal Britain must be neither a country of entrenched privilege riding over the less fortunate, nor a nanny state shepherding and corralling its people. Liberal Democrats stand for liberty, the freedom of every individual to make their own decisions about how best to live their lives. We trust people to pursue their dreams, to make the most of their talents and to live their lives as they wish, free from a controlling, intrusive state and a stifling conformity; a free and open society that glories in diversity. That statement of our principles contained in the Agenda 2020 party consultation paper ...

N.B: Unless you're REALLY spoiler-phobic this post should be ok for you! 1 – I liked it a lot. It's funny, exuberant and inventive. It's the MCU turned up to 11. 2 – It is by far the best Thor film to date. A large scale purge of the supporting characters pays off. While obviously [...]

That's the news from Peston on Sunday's interview with Miriam Gonzalez Durantez: Miriam Gonzalez Durantez says her husband @nick_clegg knew about Jared O'Mara allegations during #GE2017 so Labour must have #Peston pic.twitter.com/r5ZQIJWobU — Peston on Sunday (@pestononsunday) October 29, 2017 The allegations against the Labour candidate (and now MP) Jared O'Mara who was fighting the Sheffield Hallam seat against Nick Clegg were much worse than the sort of incidental tittle tattle to which the right response is to ignore and rise above it. Based on what I know, it seems to me a mistake therefore not to have raised these ...

Though the Party has been bumping along for too long at seven per cent in the national opinion polls, the Liberal Democrats' membership has grown remarkably. There are now more than 20,000 LibDem members in London — making it the most successful LibDem regional party — so maybe it was not so surprising that yesterday's [...]

It has been common knowledge for some time that the UK Government has been suppressing about 50 detailed reports that outline the impact that Brexit is going to have on the economy. What is less well-known, at least before this article appeared in the Independent, is that the vast majority of the cabinet, including the Prime Minister, have not read the full documents either. According to the Brexit Secretary, David Davis, Theresa May will have read the 'summary outcomes of them. She won't necessarily have read every single one, they are in excruciating detail." Asked whether the rest of the ...

In the political world, advice on how to write good emails almost always means advice on sending emails to the voters. However, those involved in running political campaigns are also (or at least, should be) very busy people, trying to get huge amounts of work done and up against immovable legal deadlines. That means being efficient with your internal emails is also an important skill, just as in a rather more normal workplace it is useful to be good at writing efficient emails to colleagues and contact. So here are five tips to do just that: Be clear what the ...

Responding to Theresa May's call on smaller companies to voluntarily publish their gender pay gap, Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader Jo Swinson said: "It was the Liberal Democrats in government who ensured large companies have to report their gender pay gaps. "If the Prime Minister is serious about wanting more companies to publish their pay gaps, we need action not warm words. "Theresa May should introduce penalties, and name and shame companies who don't comply. "At the last count, fewer than 1% of large employers had published their gender pay gap, six months into the reporting year."

Layla Moran has given an interview to the Oxford Student about her life and political priorities. She talked about her early life and the influence it had on her: Layla, having been born to a British father and a Palestinian mother, spoke of some of complications connected to coming from a multicultural background. "We had to move around a lot when I was younger so when all my peers would say 'I grew up in this village', I could never really say that I had". But it is exactly this, combined with Layla's career as a maths and physics teacher, ...

A quick internet search revealed that it is now in fact 10 years since the company moved out of Bootle in favour of new premises in Prescot.
