"It's only a matter of time before we come back in Montgomeryshire. It was a Lib Dem stronghold - we will be back."That's what Vince Cable told a meeting at Welshpool Town Hall on Saturday. The Shropshire Star has a video of him speaking at the event and quotes his views on Brexit: "The split between leave and remain hasn't changed very much. It's moved a little bit towards people who think leaving is a bad idea, but it's not shifted a great deal. "If they were to set for another vote, this time on the facts, it will be ...

Out today is the latest data from the British Election Survey (BES), focusing on turnout. It was up at the 2017 general election, making it the fourth general election in a row at which turnout has risen. But it wasn't young people who fuelled the turnout rise.

Just over a week ago, Federal Conference Committee met at LibDem HQ to set the Agenda for Southport in March, now just under six weeks away. It is always tough to sort through the many worthy motions that are submitted, but on this occasion the job was even harder – the snap election last year delayed some policy papers back so we have very limited time to debate non-policy-paper motions. We also had an increased number of motions submitted, 34, compared to 26 this time last year. Unfortunately, that lack of time is likely to spill over into Autumn too ...

Grilling Vince Cable

Sir Vince Cable, Leader of the Liberal Democrats, this lunchtime faced a grilling at the London Grill Club, a group of journalists, broadcasters and businessmen who meet on a regular basis to put probing questions to prominent figures in British life. Other recent invitees have included Alex Salmond, Nigel Farage and Chuka Umunna. Vince dismissed [...]

A few notes before we start.I've done this in the form of tables because it would have been confusing in any other form, I think. If you need them in screen-readerable format, or if your display is too narrow and they slip under the sidebar, they are on a google doc here. I have tabulated how I initially thought I would vote as well as how I actually voted to show that arguments made in committee do have an effect. I have not tabulated how anyone else voted, or what the exact numbers were for any of the votes, because ...

As usual there were far more questions than answers at the Council meeting held last week. Our only opportunity to question the Mayor is by putting down written questions to the Council meeting. Mayor Anderson is the only Leader of ... Continue reading →

We humble day editors are given a surprising amount of leeway by Caron, and readers will note that I've taken the opportunity to think about moderation and content. It's been... interesting, and from the perspective of a returning member of the editorial team, it's given me a useful steer in terms of how I might proceed in the months ahead. So, let's outline how I'm going to respond. Firstly, we stopped polling you, partly because it's all a bit complex technically. And funnily enough, given the radical change in the nature of the Party over the past two years – ...

View Poll: #19380 * taking the piss out of Ariel for making penis-shapped packaging, not extracting urine from the packaging itself... perhaps I'd better stop digging here... Anyway, I am willing to admit that one might just have been me. I'll totally want royalties if they actually DO it though, and that's not beyond the realms of possibility in this fucking bonkers world we live in right now. Actor and director Richard Ayoade is famously shy. So shy, in fact, that when he wrote his latest book, he interviewed himself. He talks to Channel 4 News about why he's so uncomfortable with interviews.

Following some problems in the Labour Party over whether transgender members can be treated as women for the purposes of all women shortlists (AWS), a number of members of the Liberal Democrats have asked me where the Lib Dems stand on transgender rights, including on AWS. As a party we voted at Federal Conference in March 2016 to use all the powers available to us under the guidance to political parties under the Equality Act 2010. Helpfully, this also links to our clear and long term view about the rights of an individual in our values, best summarised in our ...

My team's manager, Arsene Wenger, had a short-term problem to replace the players who left in January and a long-term problem because we haven't won the league since 2003-04. Arsene repeatedly called on us to have faith in him because young upcoming players would strengthen the team to make Arsenal serious contenders for the title. He thought he could do what Manchester United did with "Fergie's Fledglings" - which included players like Beckham and Giggs. Regrettably, it was not to be. Arsenal has no significant long-term solution and the focus is on short term fixes. But short-term fixes don't morph ...

Every time I hear Donald Trump pronounce on climate change I think of Kenneth Welsh's Vice President Becker in the film The Day after Tomorrow, denying that anything is wrong even as a giant glacier descends on New York. We have not got to extreme scenarios like that yet, but the level of ignorance and failure to listen to the science and take appropriate action are on a par. Essentially, the facts are inconvenient and do not fit into a particular world vision or their ambitions for the United States, so they can be disregarded. People like Trump want to ...

Stability or change? This seems to be the question on everyone's mind. And it has come to the fore in the wake of the results of the recent – well, not so recent any more – German election. One interpretation is that the voters voted for change. The mainstream parties that offered more of the same [...] The post To get stability again, we will have to be more radical appeared first on Radix.

Following my posting of a few days ago (see link below) and conversations with a few folk I wonder why cladding that blends in with the skyline and trees has not been considered to make the twin towers less noticeable for the sake of the nearby residents in Mersey Avenue? Surely such an option would be quite possible, so why not try to work it into the project before it's too late? – in full consultation with the affected residents of course!

Dundee City Council is to alter the recycling arrangements for thousands of Dundee households from April in order to ensure that the recycling offer is consistent across the city. I recently asked for an update on the recycling roll-out as Phases 1 and 2 undertaken in 2015 are done differently than the later phases. Phases 1 and 2 includes all of the West End Ward apart from the area around the Perth Road Lanes, together with parts of Broughty Ferry, Menzieshill, Lochee and Charleston and affects some 24 000 households. In Phases 1 and 2, paper, card, plastics and tins ...

Last week saw the fallout from the previous week's defeat of the Government over the Sanctions and Anti-Money Laundering Bill and, all credit to the Minister, Lord Ahmed of Wimbledon, he had returned with a series of amendments designed to remedy the Bill's original flaws. At the forefront of the cross-Party collaboration were Sharon Bowles and Susan Kramer, both of whom bring vast amounts of expertise to the table. As Sharon Bowles explained; When we started out with the Bill, there was no policy in Part 2, yet it gave sweeping powers to amend, rewrite or revoke the anti-money laundering ...

Never let it be said that we're on message here, but I really ought to remind you that, if you are due to file a Self Assessment tax return, and you haven't, the deadline is coming up fast... Public Service Announcement complete, welcome to another Monday of drama and passion. Alright, I may be exaggerating just a bit, but the fun really starts this week, as the EU Withdrawal Bill reaches the House of Lords, where the Government have to find a way of getting the Bill past an unfriendly chamber. Remember, the combined forces of the Labour and Liberal ...
