A news release from Lib Dem HQ brings this welcome news: The Liberal Democrats have forced a key concession from the government as the EU Withdrawal Bill makes its passage through the House of Lords. Under pressure from peers the government stated that they will commit to upholding the rights won from our membership of the EU. This includes upholding key parts of existing rights such as the EU Working Time Directive. Speaking last night in the Lords on behalf of the government, Lord Duncan of Springbank, the Parliamentary Under Secretary of State in both the Scotland Office and the ...

Back in the day, Vince Cable, then acting leader, famously boycotted the state visit of the Saudi King At the time, he said that I think it's quite wrong that as a country we should give the leader of Saudi Arabia this honour." He said that although Britain has a "business-like" relationship with the country, Britain would not dream of extending the same invitation to other controversial leaders like Libya's Colonel Gadaffi.. Eleven years on, the party is still calling out the appalling human rights record of the Saudi Government. Jo Swinson today lambasted Boris on the eve of the ...

Tony Robinson is interviewed here on Sixteen Million Rising, which bills itself as "the UK's First 'Grassroots' Pro-European Radio Show!" His argument that we should be encouraging about any movements towards us be Leave supporters, and not dismissive, seems to me exactly right. Robinson also touches on the current state of the Labour Party - well worth a listen.

Lib Dem MP for Bath, Wera Hobhouse, has introduced a Bill which would make upskirting illegal in England. It is high time that the disgusting practice of secretly taking a photo up a woman's skirt without consent and, sometimes, publishing it on the internet, A couple of weeks ago, Wera asked a Government Minister if the Government would legislate on this. The answer was reasonably positive, so we need to push the Government to support Wera's Bill. You would hope that nobody would try to defend the practice which has been illegal in Scotland for almost a decade. From the ...

Regular Lib Dem Voice contributor and Lib Dem peer William Wallace has won a major concession from the Government as the EU Withdrawal Bill makes its way through the House of Lords. Don't get me wrong, the words EU Withdrawal Bill send a cold shiver through my heart, but anything we can do to make the legislation less awful has to be welcomed. Under pressure from peers the government stated that they will commit to upholding the rights won from our membership of the EU. This includes upholding key parts of existing rights such as the EU Working Time Directive. ...

I've been blogging my reaction to the BSFA shortlists for about a decade now, and this is the first time I can remember feeling that all the shortlisted novels were books I would like to see winning - it's been a very difficult choice. Also worth noting that this is the first time ever that the shortlist for Best Novel does not include a single book by a white man - this for an award whose first 43 winners included only two women - though three of the last five awards have been to women, two to Ann Leckie and ...

Baroness Smith and Angela Raynor pay tribute to Ellen Wilkinson, while Kirsty Blackman extols Winnie Ewing and Lord Fowler describes Baroness Swanborough (Stella Isaacs – the first female member of the House ...

Proposals for 68 up market cabins on Juniper Hill in the heart of the Mortimer Forest have divided opinion in Ludlow and the countryside to the south. Over five days, I took a straw poll of opinion. The poll attracted nearly 600 votes and the results show more support for the scheme than I was expecting. Although support for the scheme is higher than I expected, though opposition seems to be growing as more people learn about the scheme.[1] The Forestry Commission and Forest Holidays have not helped themselves by involving Shropshire and Ludlow residents at a very late stage. ...

Theresa May spoke in the House yesterday to update the Commons on what the Mansion House speech might mean in practice. In answer to an inevitable question regarding the Irish border, the Prime Minister said: "There are many examples of different arrangements for customs around the rest of the world. Indeed we are looking at those, including for example the border between the United States and Canada." Now, first thing that needs to be said is that the US-Canada border is a very hard border. In fact, it is one of the hardest borders in the world. I'm not saying ...

A look at the new station's construction progress on 5th March brought up a similar view of the platforms, lift towers etc. as has been seen for quite a few weeks now. However, the big change has been the steelwork going up for the station building. The following couple of photos illustrate:- Very little change here A big change here The station is still on target for opening in May. I bet the local civic dignitaries are jostling for the best position in the opening day photos shoot already:-) Click on the photos to enlarge them

One of the key principles of data protection legislation is that subjects should be able to know what information is held on them and be able to challenge its accuracy. That is the best way to ensure that data holders, often government agencies, make rational decisions based on the facts, rather than rely on innuendo and misinformation. It is shocking therefore that the UK Government are seeking to introduce changes in its Data Protection Bill that aims to deny millions of people the right to access immigration data held on them by the Home Office. Organisations representing up to 3 ...
