Barnet Liberal Democrats have picked up an endorsement from Sury Khatri, the deselected Conservative councillor who said he was victim of a "right wing and hard Brexit" coup. In the key ward of Mill Hill, where he was elected in 2010 and 2014, he is urging a vote for the Liberal Democrats this time: It's time for a change in Mill Hill. Vote Liberal Democrat, you won't get a better and more energetic team for Mill Hill ward than Richard Logue, Donna Pickup and Roger Tichborne. The ward was won by the Liberal Democrats from 1994 until 2010.

BBC Arabic Festival 2018

Last night I was at the Radio Theatre at Broadcasting House in London for the opening ceremony of the 2018 BBC Arabic Festival. Now an annual event, this celebrates the output of young and independent filmmakers producing work that reflects the changing Arab world of today. That includes some full length feature films, but most [...]

Today is the first ever World Curlew Day, so it's a good one to write about the Curlew Country project in Shropshire and Powys. The project works thanks to its close collaboration with farmers and land managers who describe the first evocative bubbling of returning curlew to be a herald of spring. Farmers describe memories of hay meadows from which "curlew and peewits rose in clouds". The Curlew Country project has been trying to establish why these long lived birds (they can exceptionally live for 20 or 30 years) are now failing to breed successfully on the farmland habitat they ...

Mrs Miniver won the Oscar for Outstanding Motion Picture in 1942. It got a total of twelve Oscar nominations, and apart from Outstanding Motion Picture also won in Best Director, Best Actress (Greer Garson in the title role), Best Supporting Actress (Teresa Wright as Carol), and Best Black-and-White Cinematography, a total of six. The only other 1942 film that I am sure I have seen is Casablanca, which counts as 1943 for Oscar purposes, though I may also have seen Sherlock Holmes and the Secret Weapon. My knowledge is about to improve, however, as this year's Retro Hugos include six ...

Embed from Getty Images Along, I'm sure, with many LDV readers, I've read hundreds of articles on the subject of Brexit over the last couple of years. But one piece of writing has finally encapsulated a precise sensible solution to the whole sordid, messy business. David Shariatmadari is a writer and editor for the Guardian in London. In a post yesterday entitled "On Brexit, the views of the 48% must be respected too. That's democracy", he argued that: Given that the UK is split, it's only fair if the government delivers 'Brexit in name only', as is looking increasingly likely. ...

Here is Willie Rennie's leaders's speech to Scottish Conference. In it he talks about how the Liberal Democrats have influenced Scottish politics and policy in education, mental health and justice, calls on the Health Secretary to resign, tells us we can stop Brexit and has a huge challenge to Ruth Davidson, the Scottish Conservative leader. The text is below: In an area never won by a Liberal Democrat before, winning his council ward in Monifieth. Councillor Ben Lawrie. He's made an early impression on the council at such a young age. And has been speaking up about his mental health. ...

Are there still people out there who believe that the UK will be better off leaving the European Union? I only ask, because if so then clearly they have not been paying attention. Either that or they are Brexiteers filling some of top Cabinet jobs who feel obliged to defend the many lies that were told during the referendum. The latest blow to the 'better-off' myth comes in the Guardian, which reports that the cost of the Brexit divorce bill for the UK could be billions higher than the £35bn-£39bn figure put forward by Theresa May. They refer to a ...

The Liverpool Echo has the story on its web site – see link above. This story jumped out at me because I had never even considered that artificial pitches could be dangerous in this way. Having said that the School and Formby Parish Council seem happy to put the money in and get on with the construction subject to planning permission. Maybe an angle to take into consideration and investigate further though as Lydiate Parish Council develops plans for a multi use games area (MUGA) project for its Sandy Lane Playing Field.

The new 292 service hadn't been easy to negotiate but we finally got a timetable. The new service began on Monday and reports from passengers had been favourable. It was all going well until Friday afternoon. The last bus back from Kidderminster to Ludlow was like nothing I had ever experienced. The bus was driven at high speed, overtaking everything on the Bewdley Bypass. At Cleobury Mortimer, it began to get very difficult. The driver was shouting that the service didn't go to Ludlow. A row with passengers escalated but we did get to Ludlow 15 minutes early. There the ...
