Speaking as the result of the Irish referendum on abortion became clear, Vince Cable said: I believe in the principle of the right to choose – I think in the rest of the UK we have a sensible balance. The position in Northern Ireland is now highly anomalous and I think, probably, action will now have to be taken. Since there is, effectively, direct rule from Westminster, the government has responsibility and it can and should take the opportunity to deal with this issue properly. Grainne Teggart, of Amnesty International UK, meanwhile said, It's hypocritical, degrading and insulting to Northern ...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-44265492 The BBC has the detail on its web site – see link above This leaves just Northern Ireland living in the dark ages as the DUP partners of our present Tory Government seek to keep the Province in those dark ages. This is of course another step, if a small one, towards a united Ireland if the younger generations can move forward and break free from the shackles of religious and inter-community hatred of their past. Who would have thought that the deeply Catholic Irish Republic of not so many years ago could change so progressively and so quickly. ...

It's going to be quite a lot of Hugo posts in the next few days as I clear my backlog of books read but yet unblogged. I must say that this has brought home to me how much the system demands of conscientious voters - now there are 17 Hugo categories, two associated awards (Campbell and YA), 9 Retro Hugo categories this year (and likely at least as many next year), and all of them with six finalists. Anyway. For once, I managed to watch all of the Long Form finalists for this year. (Their combined length is 13 hours ...

Vince Cable went to Sheffield this week and predicted that the party would again be running Sheffield's Council within 5 years – and that we would win back Sheffield Hallam. "Five years from now we will have had a general election & I am sure we will have a Liberal Democrat MP representing Sheffield again in Parliament, and I would be very disappointed if we weren't running the city by that stage as well" No pressure, boss!https://t.co/ccxSD09evv pic.twitter.com/vnYJ4pb8ue — Sheffield Lib Dems (@SheffLibDems) May 24, 2018 From The Star: There is a sense of optimism in the room – spurred ...

This part of Nick Clegg's session at a recent conference caught my eye: The claim that MPs are out of touch with 'ordinary' people is complete nonsense. No matter how high or low you are in the pecking order of politics, you have to be in Constituency Surgery every Thursday chatting to a family about how you're going to help their daughter get into the local school or speaking to a single mum who isn't getting access to benefits. That's hugely valuable and boy does it keep politicians' feet on the ground. The vast majority of MPs I knew - ...

The Norwich Evening News reports: Norfolk police arrested two men at an address in Norwich ... following an allegation around the signatures for the nomination for the Conservative candidate in Mancroft ward. Police said [they] had been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit election fraud, specifically conspiracy to submit nomination papers containing fraudulent signatures. The Conservative candidate for Mancroft ward was Iain Gwynn, but it is understood he is not one of the men who has been arrested. In England (unlike in Scotland), the signatures of ten people on the electoral register are required for a local council nomination ...

Of all the constitutional crises talked about round Brexit, surely the biggest is taking an irrevocable step that doesn't have the backing of the British people at the point that it is made. If the UK exits the European Union on 29th March next year, it's starting to look as if that move will not have the backing of the electorate. Prospect magazine has analysis of YouGov polls conducted over the past two years which suggests that Remain would win a referendum on the Brexit deal. That surely means that the Government's full-speed-ahead, devil-may-care approach to Brexit has no democratic ...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-43729508 The BBC has the article on its web site – see link above With the exception of Norwich, Southend and Worthing all the other communities with low wages are in the industrial north. Turning to the highest paid towns in England they are all in the South East with the exception of Derby. No government has taken radical enough steps to seriously address this imbalance and please don't point to the Northern Powerhouse or Poorhouse, as I like to call it, because that is little more than a political sticking plaster to make it look like Government is addressing ...

Just when we thought that the Tories were so preoccupied with Brexit that the rest of public policy was safe for the time being from their disastrous world-view, the Farming Minister, George Eustace slipped out a written statement on the last day of the Parliamentary term announcing that he is going to extent the inhumane and failing badger cull to low risk areas. As the Mirror reports, not only is the shooting of badgers by so-called sharp shooters cruel and random, (a large number are not killed cleanly and die an agonising death) but the vast majority of those killed ...
